Chapter 7

April

"There are a total of twenty wolves on patrol along with their third in command." Hugh spoke into the ear piece as I stayed in my favourite place, on a tree branch.

I was looking through my infrared binoculars, observing my surroundings.

Those binoculars were specifically designed to make you distinguish body heat and see it as a mixture of red and yellow swirls.

"The east side is the least protected, I could try that route." I stated as I continued analysing the place around me.

"Find me the exact location of the alpha."

"Hmm...."Hugh hummed and I heard the quick tapping of the keyboard. "

"He's in his bedroom." He replied after a while to which I only hummed in response.

"But he's with his mate April, you can't possibly talk to him there." Hugh continued.

"Call his office phone. That'll pull him there." I suggested.

I heard more tapping before I heard the all too known ringing of a phone.

"Keep him busy." I stated as I placed my binoculars back and started moving towards the pack house.

As I got closer to the office window I could hear Alpha Rosewood talking to Hugh.

I jumped to the tree branch nearest to his window office which was thankfully opened.

"Yes, yes. I've already sent them to get them checked." I heard him say as I slide easily through the window.

"That's enough now Hugh." I said, making Alpha Rosewood snap his head to my direction.

"Yes Alpha." Hugh replied to which both the Alpha and I heard him.

Alpha Rosewood looked at the phone in his hand in confusion when he heard the beeping sound of the cut line.

He turned his gaze back to me and didn't waver as he placed the phone back on its holder.

"I've been expecting you, you know." He stated coolly.

I raised my eyebrows at him and started walking casually around the room.

"Oh yeah? And how is that?" I asked calmly as I trailed my fingers along a book cover that was lying out of place on the bookshelf.

'The Great Gatsby', the title read.

"I heard about you killing my former pack warriors so I assumed that you'd want to find answers here as well for whatever you're searching for." Alpha Rosewood replied, surprising me a little.

"And will you be able to give me those answers?" I asked as I walked towards the sofa and sat down crossing one leg over the other.

I was treating this place like it was my own office and I'm here talking to a long time friend.

I wasn't nervous one bit and it looked like Alpha Rosewood wasn't either.

A small smile tugged at his lips as he shook his head.

"I'm afraid I won't be of much help since I too, am looking for answers." He said in what appeared to be a disappointed tone.

I scrunched up my face in confusion and it seemed like he saw my furrowed eyebrows as he continued.

"The situation is explained simply actually. One day I was with my beta and the next one he wasn't along with three of my best warriors." Alpha Rosewood explained.

"I should've known that something was wrong when they started training more. Day and night. Every chance they got." He continued.

With every word coming out of his mouth, I was getting more and more angry.

The thought of those bastards training to kill my parents made me want to get them back to life and kill them all over again. But it seems like they were just three pawns used by an even bigger group of killers, their beta being the first in line to be found.

As I searched more, it appeared like this wasn't just some random rogue attack like I thought. This was a well planned assassination.

"Would you like some time to calm down?" Alpha Rosewood's question snapped me out of my thoughts.

"I'm fine." I replied with no emotion. "Go on." I all but ordered making him growl.

All I did was glare for him to sigh and look away.

"A couple of days after they disappeared, I heard of the unfortunate death of the Fields family." He started once again.

"The family as a whole?" I asked, masking any emotion from my voice.

"Yes, even their daughter. Or that's what I heard at least." He continued the last sentence in a lower tone, like he wasn't sure.

"Of course he can't be sure since we're obviously still very much alive." Rose mumbled and I could imagine her rolling her eyes.

"Do you know of anyone whom your beta was in contact with from outside your pack?" I asked, ignoring Rose.

"Not really but I found this in my office's trash bin." He said as he opened one of his desk drawers and got out a shredded sheet of paper that was glued together.

I looked at him in confusion at what he said. Why would anyone look through their trash bin?

Alpha Rosewood must've noticed my expression because he started explained.

"I first saw one shredded piece on the ground and when I picked it up, I got confused since I never really did shred any paper. I thought that it had something to do with my beta and the warriors so I collected all of the shreds from the trash bin and tried my best to put them back together."

I nodded my head at him as I took the paper from him and scanned it with my eyes.

It looked like some bank transaction. I looked down in search for the amount transferred and as soon as my eyes caught sight of the number, I gasped loudly in surprise. It was totally out of character for me to gasp that loud in my Rose persona but I couldn't help it.

"Five million?" I gaped out in shock and looked up at the alpha to see him nod his head with a sigh.

"I was shocked too and actually reread the whole document thrice to make sure." He said.

Oh Lord. Was killing my parents that important for them to pay five million dollars?

"Was that five million to be divided over all four of them?" I asked as my eyes kept scanning the paper in my hand.

"I don't know for sure but looking from where the warriors became nothing but mere rogues afterwards, I assume that Doyle took it all to himself." Alpha Rosewood replied and I didn't miss the tint of disappointment and sadness in his voice over his former beta.

"April! You have to get out quickly." Hugh's urgent voice sounded in my ear.

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't know." I found alpha Doyle reply which made me scrunch my face at him.

"Not you." I stated as I got up from my place and walked towards the window.

"Why Hugh? What's wrong?" I asked again.

"Your twenty four hours are to be over in a couple of minutes April. Your scent will no longer be masked." He replied making my eyes widen.

I clicked my tongue in annoyance. I should've sprayed myself once more before going out!

"I think my time with you is over now Alpha Rosewood." I stated, still looking out the window.

"If there's anything more I'll have someone call you." I continued as I stepped on the windowsill.

"Won't I at least get a name to use?" He asked.

I turned my head slightly to the side but not making any eye contact.

"Rose. Just call me Rose." I replied before jumping out the window, not waiting for a reply since I obviously had no time.

I jumped from branch to branch faster than I've ever done before. The trees shook from my movements and the branches swayed along. Leaves were falling uncontrollably and I could hear the small wood animals run everywhere beneath me.

I couldn't care less though. I had to reach Hugh's room before my scent comes out.

"One minute April." Hugh warned in my ear, making the adrenaline in my body rush more. I didn't feel this way when I was to kill the rogues. What a joke!

"30 seconds." Hugh warned again making me growl.

"Shut up." His countdown was making me nervous for no reason and I didn't like it.

"Ten...nine...eight...seven.." He was doing this on purpose I'm sure.

I slide quickly through his window just in time as he said 'one'.

Hugh looked up at me and smiled sheepishly.

I scowled at him and went to the bathroom to change back into my jeans and baggy shirt.

"I'm going to bed." I mumbled as I handed Hugh the bank document that Alpha Rosewood gave me for him to analyse.

"Good night April." Hugh yelled behind me as I marched towards the door.

"Night." I replied as I shut the door and started making my way tiredly to my room.

As I made my way through the pack house, I couldn't help miss Lucian's scent all around me and I didn't hate it one bit.

I wished things were different and I can be happy with him right now.

With a deep sigh, I opened my bedroom door and went straight to bed. I was so tired to think of anything anymore and I allowed sleep to consume as my mate's scent filled the air.
