Chapter Eight
Lilly
A strange feeling like something was about to attack me startles me awake. Panting heavily, I look at the room I am staying in. Last night, after dinner, Lucas led me to a big guest room and told me I could stay there for the night. I wanted to return to my house but I was turned down flatly by Lucas.
"Allowing you to sleep in a different room than mine is already stretching out my will. If you want to return, you will allow me to sleep there together with you." was what he told me.
Since I have no wolf, I don't have a hypersensitive hearing and what I hear is almost comparable to the hearing of a normal human. However, just now, I had a feeling that I heard someone painfully yell. After a few seconds, I somehow feel that there are low growls and people (or wolves) running.
I hurriedly get out of my bed to find Lucas. I somehow know that there is something wrong in the pack. Immediately when I sit up, I see Lucas sitting with his legs crossed on the sofa near my bed. He looks relaxed and comfortable with his back leaning on the chair as he lazily looks at me. He is holding a phone and it looks like he is playing flappy bird before I woke up.
What is he doing here? Isn't the pack in trouble? Is he hanging out in this room while I was sleeping?
........That is a little creepy.
"Have you felt something?" Lucas gently asks me.
"I am not sure, but I felt like I was about to be attacked so I was startled awake." I tell him. "Then I heard wolves running around, like someone was giving an order."
"Correct." Lucas puts down his phone and points to his left.
"To the west of the border line, there are around fifty wolves hiding their presence and preparing to attack our border patrol. The signal was just given when you woke up."
"West of the border line? But that's far from here." Definitely, the place is way too far for my hearing.
"And fifty wolves. Will they be fine? Who would attack us?" I worriedly ask him.
"You felt it and not heard it. The feeling of being attacked was the feeling you had when the border patrol was about to be attacked." Lucas explains to me. Then, he stands up, walks to the window and turns the curtains to the side.
"They are fine. The ten border patrols are strong enough to protect their lives until reinforcements are sent. Gamma Richard is already a few seconds away from them with thirty warriors. The strength of our warriors are more than enough to annihilate fifty ordinary wolves. The organized movement is good." He says while he looks at the western border. I stand up and stand near him in front of the window.
I glance at the western border but fail to see any movement. The place is just too far for me to see anything that is going on there.
"You will not go there?" I ask Lucas.
"No. The pack members are eager to show me what they are made of. Richard mind-linked me about it. He told me that they got it handled."
"But, I somehow feel that we are in trouble. Lucas.. I feel danger. I don't know why, and I can't explain it. I don't know why I felt the attack too." I am very confused. Can it be that I have some kind of power to feel danger?
Lucas faces me and takes a lock of my hair before he gently twists it on his finger. It seems like he likes to touch me whenever I am near him.
"You have the connection between you and the pack members. A Luna normally has that ability."
"But, I am not the luna, yet. I don't have your mark, isn't it that a luna will create that connection with the pack from the moment the alpha marks her?"
"Yes, we have not completed the mating process yet." He says with a small smirk and mischievous eyes. "This connection that you have with the pack seems to have nothing to do with you being my mate."
"However, now we should go to the south border." He lets go of my hair and takes my hand instead.
"The danger that you feel is not coming from the western border but, rather, from the south. Around two hundred and fifty wolf-like creatures are currently hiding their presence there. Once the big fight on the western border starts, they will attack."
"Two hundred and fifty?! Wolf-like? How did you know this?" Since I was born, our pack had never suffered any attack. Moreover, I never heard about anything about the wolf-like creatures before.
"I left my sense imprint on the whole area. I know every movement within the pack." Lucas tells me as a matter-in-fact which makes me instantly nod my head. I have no idea about the sense imprints but it seems like a power that an alpha has.
"Let's go, Lilly." I hear Lucas say as I feel strong arms wrapping on my shoulders and the back of my legs.
..............................
The southern border looks like a mess when we arrive. Coming here, Lucas carried like a princess so we can travel fast. When we get there, the "wolf-like creatures" are already fighting against the border patrol. Tristan and around fifty warriors are also here and already joined the fight.
I instantly understand why they are called "wolf-like" the moment I see the creatures. These... things are not were-wolves. They are like wolves but are possessed with evil aura. They are like dogs who are afflicted with rabies. Their eyes are bloodshot red and in their mouths are protruding fangs with their saliva running down their mouths. Their demeanor is vicious and they attack without regard to their safety.
The pack seems to be caught by surprise. Still, they respond well. A squad led by the future beta arrived on time to save the border patrols and are now trying to hold the attack before the other reinforcements come. From the looks on their faces, it seems like it is also the first time for the warriors to see these "wolf-like" creatures.
Lucas stops on the roof of the patrol guard's quarter and sets me down beside him. He scans the area where the fighting is going on. I follow his gaze and see that the wounded pack warriors are increasing. The "wolf-like" creatures are really vicious and although the warriors are strong, the healing ability of the enemies are incomparable. Their wounds are healing so fast it is almost impossible to hurt them.
Lucas slowly raises his hand and a terrifying aura suddenly emanates from him. The warriors and the "wolf-alike" creatures are startled by the aura and unconsciously look at our direction. On the palm of Lucas, a faint red glow can be seen. The temperature rises and the red glow on his palm increases in size until it is about as big as a basketball. Then, Lucas makes a pushing motion on his hand and the red circle glows hurriedly disperse into tiny bullets and are shot to the directions of the "wolf-like" creatures, one bullet each. One by one, the "wolf-like" creatures fall on their knees. Dead.
This all happened within a span of five seconds.
At this moment, another squad led by the Beta arrives but no one dared to move. All of us are stunned silly.
"The secret is to crush their hearts." Lucas, who is the cause of all this, says in a tone like what he did nothing extraordinary. "The "wolf-like" creature's healing ability is terrifying to the point that it is almost impossible to kill them. But if you crush their hearts, their puny lives would end fast."
I understand that killing them requires the crushing of their hearts. What I can't understand is how strong Lucas is to simultaneously do that to more than two hundred moving "wolf-like" creatures.
"Clean this area and burn their corpses. The unwounded should send the wounded to the pack infirmary. Call all the pack doctors. The fight in the western border just finished too. Take the intruders to the prison and double the guards. Bind them with silver." Lucas slowly orders as if he is getting bored.
At this moment, I suddenly feel a stabbing pain which goes from my back to my heart. I gasp in pain. Lucas immediately turns to me and holds my arms.
"What's the matter?" He asks with worry evident in his eyes.
"Someone is wounded badly. He got struck in the chest near the heart." I heard a collective intake of breath around me.
My chest is suddenly swarmed with confusion and disbelief. By now, I already deduced that these feelings are from the pack members. I understand that they are surprised by what I said and most of them hold a feeling of disbelief.
However, their feelings do not matter at this moment. I look at Lucas who nods at me before his eyes find Tristan.
"Tristan, escort Lilly to the pack house. I will go to the western border. Send a couple of doctors after me." Lucas looks at the beta who just arrived. "We will hold a meeting tomorrow morning in my office. I'll leave everything to you." He nods at him before he looks at me. Lucas holds my hand and gives it a squeeze before he runs to the western border.
