My family

Before I entered the packhouse, I could smell the delicious smell of food. My stomach rumbles loudly. I’m hungry. I rushed to the fourth flour and took a quick shower. After the shower I went straight to the kitchen. I saw everybody was already sitting on the table, waiting for me.

The Beta family: Bonnie, James, Joshua and his little sister Eve; Gamma Marcus and my mother.

“Hi everybody, sorry I’m a few minutes late. I forgot the time, when I was in the woods. What’s for dinner?” I asked with the nicest smile on my face, and looked at Bonnie. I knew my mother couldn’t be mad at me, and with that smile on my face, Bonnie couldn’t resist me either. I know she likes me.

“It’s OK Adam, I made us chicken. Have a seat..” Bonnie tells me. I take the seat next to my mother. I look at Joshua and make sure I don’t make eye-contact with Beta James. I know I’m not be able to look straight, with the information about the coup in the back of my head.

Luna Avery opens diner with a short prayer and we all dig into the delicious food. We have a cook in the house, but Bonnie likes to make diner for the family. Until this morning, I consider everyone on this table as family. I’ve grown up with the Beta family. Bonnie is like my second mom, and Joshua my ‘brother’. I have always been sceptic about James, his hunger for more power is growing over the last years, and my mother have had more differences every week. But he was always nice to me. He takes me out fishing and trains with Joshua and me at least one time a week. He’s a bit of the father, I never had. But I never felt completely comfortable with him. I’m not sure why.

And then there is little Eve. I look at her. She’s only twelve years old, but you can see she’s gonna be a beauty. Unlike her brother Joshua, she has the same hair color as her father. Her long brown hair reaches her middle. And her brown eyes, the same as her moms and Joshua’s, are looking straight in your soul. She isn’t looking exactly like one of her parents, but she shares some characteristics. She has the same warm personality as her mom, but she's more cheeky and bold. Don’t let the angelic face fool you.

And then we have Gamma Marcus. He’s twenty years old, black hair with blue eyes and he’s a very smart and quiet person. His parents died; his mother died giving birth to him and his father died during the last attack four years ago. He was only sixteen, when he took over the Gamma role. But because a wolf is an adult at the age of sixteen, it was no problem. Normally you take over the role of your parent when you’re between 18 and 20 years old, but in this case it was natural he took over at sixteen. And Marcus is doing a great job of being our Gamma.

“Adam?” Hmmm. I look up, “Sorry, I was lost in my thoughts. Sup?” My mother looked at me, worried. “I asked you if you liked your walk into the woods?” I nod. “Yes, you know I like being outdoors.. Just what I needed today. How was your afternoon?” I know she understands my hint. “Good, good.. I went to the library. I read a few books.” she answered me before she focused on her chicken again.

I finish my supper and look around the table. I saw the annoying look on Eve’s face while she sticks with her fork in the pees on her plate. And I couldn’t help to laugh. “Eve, you still don’t like peas?” I wink at her. “You better eat them up, if you wanna grow a big girl.” I said to her while flexing my muscles. Eve looks at Adam with fire in her eyes. She gaze on Adam before she rolls her eyes and keeps sticking in the pees.

I chuckle, poor Bonnie. I know she’s gonna be a handful.

After dinner, I went to my bedroom. I wanted some time alone. To think about the strange voice in my head, who was talking to me this afternoon.
