Chapter 4: New Beginnings

“Do I know you?”

She paused. She was about to say something when one of the guards stopped him and led him somewhere. Avery watched as the guy walked away. His aura was different now than the other day. He seemed the serious type and his expensive suit made him intimidating.

But he his perfume was familiar. It was the same perfume that lingered in her condominium. Now, she was sure that he was the pervert from the other day. This is why she didn’t date younger men. They are rude.

The following day, news about JDC Mobile spread like wildfire. All broadcast stations and news companies were publishing the said issue. In fact, the company was under investigation even if the proof was already enough to put John behind the bars.

While all of these were happening, Avery was sound asleep in her apartment. She was busy fixing her things until late last night that she wasn’t able to find a target. Her phone rang at around 9 am.

Still half asleep, she answered it. “Hm… yes?”

“What did you do?”

She opened one of her eyes to see who the caller is, it’s John.

“What did I do? I’m sleeping.”

“No. I know it’s you who told the press about me. You’re the only one who knows about the corruption.”

Avery sighed, “What corruption? Look, John. I didn’t tell the press anything. Just leave me alone. Don’t make excuses just to talk to me.”

The thing about Avery was that she didn’t technically lie and John knew it. But he also knew what she is capable of and he was sure that she was the only person who can access those files. He frowned and hanged up the call.

Avery then checked the news and smiled when she saw that Plan C worked. Even if it would be impossible to get her dog, she knew she succeed already. She stretched her body as she started her day. Just then, her phone rang again.

“Hello?”

“Hi. This is Mark. As we discussed, I will give you the money but it will be in cash. I don’t want JDC to find out our connection and it seems like they are looking for the person who did it.”

“Okay. I’ll tell you where we can meet.”

After the call, Avery jumped around her room in happiness. She turned on her favorite music and danced to it. She got what she wanted and this made her feel powerful.

Mark and Avery met at a small restaurant near her apartment. He placed the bag under the table that she could get after their talk.

“I can ask my assistant to do this but I personally want to thank you for trusting me. I still don’t know why you gave it to me.”

She smiled, “I know you’ll be interested, and he can never change your mind.”

He nodded and sipped his coffee, “You are a smart girl. To be honest with you, I did a background check. I think you have a lot of potential, and it’s a waste that you don’t work at all. So, I was thinking of offering you a job. I’ll give you a month to think about it. It’s for the company of my friend.”

She smiled, “Thank you. I really appreciate you doing this.”

After a couple of minutes, Mark left the restaurant. Avery couldn’t explain what she was feeling. A top company wanted her to work for them despite knowing what she did to JDC. She looked down below the table to see the bag.

The offer was indeed tempting but right now, she didn’t need work since she now has one million. She knew she can easily get a target if she wanted to.

If someone were to find out Avery’s plan, they’d think she was a bad person. But beneath her anger with men, she did not use up all her money on herself.

She got her phone to dial a specific number.

“Avery? How are you! It’s been a month.”

“Hi. Did the kids enjoy my gifts last time?”

“Of course, they did. They are actually looking forward to seeing you again this week.”

“That’s great. Maybe you can send me the things they need? I might come there tomorrow.”

“You know I can’t do that, Avery. We just accept whatever it is you give us. The kids are forever thankful for your help.”

Avery smiled, “I’ll see you tomorrow then. I’ll just go shopping today.”

“Thank you for everything, Avery.”

She was about to leave the restaurant when the rain started pouring. She checked her bag and realized she didn’t bring her umbrella. She sighed, she needed to go to the mall to buy stuff. She checked her phone to see if she can find a car to fetch her but all taxis were busy at the moment.

Just then, a guy entered the restaurant. He was wearing a long black coat with a transparent umbrella. He folded his umbrella as he walked to the counter. He even excused himself for being wet. He looked like a regular as the staff was friendly with him, unlike her.

“Hi, sir! Your usual?”

“Yes please. Thank you!”

He then sat on the table beside her and started wiping his things.

“Heavy rain, huh?”

She just nodded and smiled. Avery didn’t mind him too much and tried to check which target was available at the moment. She needed to find a new “partner” to keep her money rolling. There were tons of rich old men but not all of them were interested in young beautiful girls like her.

Avery looked by the window and just realized that she needed to go. She got the bag and headed out. She looked around hoping to find a cab. The rain did not stop pouring and the longer she waited, she knew she might not find the gifts she needed.

She was about to run in the rain when she felt someone beside her.
