Chapter 2

“Father, please tell us what you know.” Zayne begged, making himself more comfortable on the bed.

With a sigh, father began, “A long time ago, Lycan and werewolves made sacrifices to the moon goddess every blood moon. This went on for centuries until the day Darius Sebastian, the man in charge of the sacrificial offering to the goddess, mated with Ophelia, the then daughter of the goddess who was sent to Earth.

The goddess was pissed at the action of her own daughter. She had cursed Darius to turn into a monster that had no control of himself every full moon. Ophelia on the other hand died after giving birth to a Lycan, one whom we were told would be the one to wipe out the werewolf race as a punishment.

The punishment was meant for Lycans alone until a female wolf had helped Ophelia conceive her son. The goddess had given strict instructions that on no condition should Ophelia be helped, but that woman defied the goddess thus, bringing calamity upon werewolves. Sadly, the son of Ophelia is yet to be found. If found would be killed.

“Why would they kill him?” I questioned.

“He is the reincarnation of Mavros, the god of destruction.”

The title ‘god of destruction’ seemed to suit the man with curly hair. I doubted he was the one, though. But then, the blue-eyed one mentioned something about consequences and father just said something related.

“Father, does the god of destruction appear on the day of the blood moon?”

He nodded, “Yes. He comes with his brother, Aspro.”

“Brother? With silver colored hair and eyes as blue as the ocean?”

Father now look surprised- probably from my description of the god. “Yes. But how do you know what he looks like? From what I know, the Aima fengari has not occurred in over a hundred years.”

“I saw them.”

“Who?” Zayne asked.

“Mavros and Aspro.”

Father visibly tensed and he frowned deeply. “Did they say anything?”

I nodded, trying to remember the exact words Mavros had used. “When the first one is born, a curse shall soak the soil with blood.”

Father abruptly stood up. His form was shaken as his eyes flickered between Zayne and me. What was wrong with him? Zayne had gotten up from his spot and was now standing beside father.

“We are no longer children, father. Please tell us what is making you quiver in fear.”

“Long before I met your mother,” his eyes began to tear up at the memory, “Mavros appeared to me. He said the goddess had not forgotten the punishment she promised werewolves, but was just waiting for the right time. He told me my mate would give birth to a child he would battle against. That crazy god told me your birth would be the key to beginning the destruction.”

“Wait a minute.” I blinked severally as I tried to absorb the information. “Are you saying I have to battle a god?”

“Yes, my dear. That is why I trained you and your brother. I needed you two to be ready by the time he comes and now is that time.”

In all my twenty-one years of living, I had never been so confused. I didn’t bargain for any of the things I was hearing. Heck, all I wanted was to succeed my father, find my mate and live a peaceful life. I didn’t include battling an anger filled god.

“There has to be a mistake.” Zayne said, shaking his head in silence.

No one said a word. I was beyond afraid. The look in his eyes said it all. He would destroy us all and not even care. Why did the goddess have to be so cruel to us? To me.

“Don’t get scared now, kids. Remember, there’s always light at the end of every tunnel.” Father said. It sounded as if he was trying to encourage himself.

The door busted open and my two friends ran in. One was Melody, soon-to-be gamma. She had olive skin that complimented her brown hair and hazel eyes. The other was Logan, soon-to-be beta. He had thick, black hair and gray eyes.

“Oh my goodness, are you okay?” Melody panted.

“I’m fine, Mel. Did you two run all the way here?”

She nodded in response, “Yeah. We just came back from Shadow pack. I swear my heart was in my throat when I heard you got shot.” She pretended to be dizzy.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at her, “Stop being a drama queen. Thanks for coming, you guys.”

“Not a problem.” Logan said, going over to shake Zayne’s hand.

Father still hadn’t said a word. It was as if he didn’t know they were in the room. I reached for his hand, “Father,” I gestured to Melody and Logan. He gave me a warm smile before averting his gaze to the duo in front of us.

“Logan, Melody, how was the meeting?” He didn’t sound like he had been talking about something frightening some minutes ago.

“Alpha Kane has agreed to send a thousand men.” Logan said.

A thousand men? So he had been secretly preparing for this Mavros guy. I wonder if they knew about it.

“That’s good. Make preparations for their accommodation.”

“Will do. But if I may ask, why do we need a thousand men here?”

“All I can say for now is that there is danger lurking out there. I do not want to be taken by surprise.” He said curtly.

Logan and Melody nodded in understanding. They knew he would not answer any more questions. I felt relieved that the pain in my shoulder was slowly subsiding and that in about a few hours, I could leave the hospital.

“I’ll be leaving now.” Father announced, hands still behind his back. “Zayne, take good care of your sister. Don’t leave her side for anything.”

“Yes, father.”

He gave Logan a pat on the shoulder before walking out of the room. He was really worried something would happen to me. My eyes darted to my friends whose eyes were glazed over. They were mind linking. It was an ability that all werewolves had. They could talk to each other without saying a word for others to hear.

“What are you guys talking about?” I questioned.

That seemed to stop whatever conversation they were having. Melody nudged Logan, and he looked down at her. “I’m not talking this time. You do it.” He told her.

“What’s going on, you guys?” I asked once more.

“Nothing.” Melody forced a smile. She batted her lashes- something she always did whenever she was lying.

“You’re lying.” I gave her a pointed look.

She threw her hands up into the air and dramatically sighed. “Fine, I’ll tell you. We heard your conversation with the Alpha.”

“You were eavesdropping?” Zayne looked quite upset.

Melody smiled sheepishly, “It’s not really eavesdropping when you have great hearing.” She pointed at her ears.

Since they were going to become my beta and gamma in the near future. I had no choice but to tell them everything I knew. By the time I was done, Melody had her mouth wide open, while Logan had a look of worry etched on his face.

“You must promise not to speak to anyone about this.” Zayne said firmly.

“I promise.” They chorused.

Melody tapped her chin repeatedly as she paced up and down the room. “That explains everything. Guards were multiplied all around the border and Alpha had asked to get at least three hundred men from each pack. I wondered why he needed such an army, but it all makes sense now.”

“I don’t think mere warriors can stop Mavros.” I pointed out, “He is a god, remember? Maybe with a snap of his finger they’ll have blood running down their noses and have their hearts far away from their bodies.”

Melody cringed, feeling irritated by what I had said. “That would be a gruesome sight.” She wrapped her arms around herself.

Definitely would be.

Two days later, I was back home and going through the books in the library. Surely, there had to be some sort of information on this Mavros guy. Was it possible that only he wanted revenge? His brother didn’t look like he could hurt a fly and live with it. One thing was for sure and that was the fact that the goddess was a part of whatever destruction was to come. She had been disobeyed after all.

As I searched further, I caught a whiff of something wonderful. It smelled like citrus and pine. I found it absolutely nice. Whoever this person was, I needed to know the name of the perfume he or she was using.

“What are you looking for?” A deep voice asked from the entrance of the library.

Standing at a height of about 6’1, this tanned skinned man had a recognizable feel about him. His eyes were a light shade of brown with black, curly hair that made him look wild. He stepped into the library, his eyes never leaving mine. I felt transfixed and couldn’t look away even if I wanted to.

Something inside of me seemed to jump up in excitement. My wolf was never one to get excited by just anyone. What was it about this strange man? I hadn’t realized he was standing in front of me until he asked again.

“What are you looking for?”

Having him this close finally made me realize who he was to me. “Mate.”
