Chapter 3

I had fled the library when I realized he was my mate. I panicked and did what I felt was right. I couldn’t even say anything relevant or ask for his name. He probably thought I was crazy. It had already been two days, and I hadn’t seen him since then.

“It’d be very much appreciated if you listen to what I’m saying, Valeria.” Father pointed a finger in my direction.

“I apologize, father. So what were you talking about?”

He sighed, lifting his hand to his temple. “You haven’t been listening to me at all. I’ll say this for the last time, Valeria. You’re twenty-one years old, and according to tradition, you are to take over from me.”

“What? No.” I stood up, “What about Mavros? I have to forget about being queen and face him head on. Being queen is going to be an enormous distraction.”

“I agree, but you need to be queen. You cannot run away from your responsibilities, my dear. Besides, with the power shift you’ll become stronger than you already are.” He reasoned.

“I can’t do this. Give Zayne the crown. He’ll happily take responsibility.”

“No, I won’t. Valeria, don’t you dare say what you just said to anyone else. Are you insane? I’m trying to help you out here and you’re talking about giving the crown to your brother? Don’t get me upset!” he slammed his fist on the huge mahogany desk in front of him.

“You don’t understand, father. A crazy god has his eyes on me and is probably waiting to strike, and you want me to become queen? I can’t do it. Please be king until I’m ready.”

I turned around and left the office with father yelling at me to come back. Why wasn’t he understanding me? I had to battle Mavros, and that was my priority. I wasn’t ready to wear a crown and have people call me Alpha. My life had really taken a quick turn since the last three days.

“Hey.”

I abruptly stopped walking when I heard his voice. Slowly turning around, I came face to face with the man I had run from. He looked even better than when I first saw him.

“Um… hi. You see, I’m in a rush right now and-”

“You’re avoiding me, aren’t you?” His eyes held no expression of any sort as he looked at me. It was nerve wrecking.

I laughed nervously, “I’m not avoiding you at all. I’m just really busy and would really appreciate it if we didn’t have this conversation right now.”

He bit his lips and looked away, “I get it. Whatever you’re doing is more important than getting to know your mate.”

“Look, I-”

“Save it, Valeria.” He had a look of disappointment in his eyes before walking away.

What was wrong with me? Even more, what was wrong with my wolf? She seemed to become extremely calm whenever he was around. I expected her to be very active and want to get to know him better. Maybe she was probably just shy.

I forced a smile when I saw Melody walk in my direction. She seemed amazed by something. “Hey Mel,”

“Did you see that guy with curly, black hair?” She pointed in the direction my mate had followed.

“Yeah, why?”

“He’s gorgeous, duh. I wonder what his name is.”

Another weird thing. My wolf didn’t react when another female called our mate gorgeous. It felt strange. Werewolves were naturally possessive of their mate, but alphas tended to be overly possessive. She was just calm.

“He is. I’ll tell you what,”

She leaned closer to me and batted her lashes, “Listening.” She rubbed her hands together.

“He’s my mate, so don’t do anything stupid.”

She instantly moved away from me like I had said something surprising. I kind of did though. She blinked severally with her mouth hanging open.

“Th-that guy is your mate?!”

I covered her mouth with my hand, “Keep it down, loudmouth.” I removed my hand when she bopped her head, “And yes, he is my mate. I just can’t seem to say anything when I see him. Even my wolf isn’t as active as she should be. It’s bothersome.”

“You both are just a nervous wreck. Just muster up courage to talk to him, and you’ll start feeling as you should. By the way, your father had sent Carter and Logan to go get Aphrodite.” She said, leaning against the wall.

“Aphrodite? What for?”

Aphrodite was a close friend of mine and a witch. She had helped heal me one time I got really ill. I almost died.

“Well, he’s worried Mavros will attack soon and is seeking help from almost every supernatural being. Well, except the dragons, griffins and faes.”

Werewolves, vampires and witches shared a very close bonds and were allies. We looked out for each other, but it was a totally different case with dragons, griffins and faes. Dragons had created a shield, keeping out any other supernatural being. Griffins liked to stay hidden. The last time a griffin was seen was centuries ago, during the battle between dragons and faes for supremacy. As for faes, they just didn’t care about anyone but themselves. I hated them.

“So did they agree?”

“Lord Kieran agreed to be of help if things got out of hand. For Wendy, she still hasn’t really said anything.”

Lord Kieran was the King of vampires and a very weird guy. I had seen him twice, and I couldn’t help but think he was special in his own crazy way. Wendy was the clan leader of the witches.

“This is definitely worse than I thought.” I ran a hand through my hair.

Melody hit my arm, “You’re going against a god, stupid. Do you think it’ll be as easy as eating cereal?”

“You’re not helping, Mel. What if things go wrong and he destroys us all? Will you be thinking of cereal then?”

She shrugged her shoulders, “We’ll never know.” She said and then walked away.

There were so many things running through my head. There were lots of powerful creatures here so without doubt there had to be someone who had an idea on how to save everyone. I had thought of going to search for someone powerful, but knowing father, he wouldn’t let me leave the pack.

“There’s no escape.” A voice whispered into my ear.

The hairs on my neck stood on end and a chill ran down my spine when I realized I was the only one in the area. The person or being who whispered in my ear definitely had something planned out for me.

“You’ll all die and that’s a promise.”
