Chapter 2.1

I couldn’t stop thinking about that girl. I wish I knew who she was. I couldn’t stop thinking about that look of panic on her face as the guy grabbed her arm and threw her in his car. With the smells of so many people in the air, I couldn’t pinpoint exactly which one was hers or I would have followed them to make sure she was safe; not to mention, the wind was blowing towards her and away from me so I can’t even be sure I smelled her at all. I heard a noise in the distance that brought me back to the present.

“Did you guys hear that?” I asked.

“Hear what?” Kevin replied.

“I could have sworn I heard something,” I stated.

“Quit daydreaming, it was probably just one of us or something,” Sissie said as she sat next to me. “We have to get going, dinner plans and all.”

“See you guys later.” we all said in unison.

“There! Did you guys hear it this time?” I asked.

“No, but then you have that super hearing thing going for you.” Tiffany said.

“I’m going to go check it out, be right back.”

“Dude, only people in scary movies say that, right before they die.” Wheeler laughed.

I got up and headed towards the woods. It sounded like someone or rather more than one someone moving really fast, faster than a human can. Lycans no better than to run in these woods, so something has to be up. As the wind blew towards me, I realized it wasn’t Lycans in the woods, but vampires. And then I caught it, the most amazing scent. MATE! Was my mate being chased by vampires? Surely they would have caught her by now, unless they are carrying her. I jumped into a nearby tree and watched as three vampires ran through the woods. Three vampires, no humans, no lycans, just vampires. Wait… Does that mean my mate is a vampire? I have heard of this happening, but never witnessed it. As far as I know, those are just stories people tell to explain why a member of the pack has disappeared. I was getting anxious. The vampire in the lead is the girl from earlier. That’s why she looked panicked. My blood called to her. And that guy was getting her out of there so she wouldn’t feed on any humans. No wonder I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Something is off. She and that guy have heartbeats. They beat slower than a human’s, I almost missed them. My mate is half human. Where is the other girl going? Judging by their conversation the three vampires are racing. And the guy thinks the other girl is going to feed on a human. I think my mate is playing a dangerous game. And there goes the guy. Did I just hear their thoughts? I’m pretty sure I didn’t actually hear them say anything. That is weird. Maybe they were talking. They had to be, I know I can’t read minds. I need to speak with my father. But I also just want to be here with her.

Strix, my mate, looks peaceful running. I watch as she crosses the imaginary finish line and declares herself the winner. Rose, the other girl, is laughing as Ben drags her towards Strix. Both girls are laughing at him now. Well, now I know they are siblings at least. I silently follow them to see where they are going. They must be the vampire family that moved here last year. Is that… No way! The Cavenaughs are having dinner with them. I thought they were having dinner with Jason’s family. Oh, makes sense, he is a vampire. I haven’t met a lot of vampires, seeing as they are not allowed on pack lands, but I guess I should have known. He showed up last year, same time as the vampire family moved here. Now I really want to beat him. My mate has to deal with his disrespect all the time. I don’t see Jason with them, I bet Sissie is disappointed. I send a quick text to KP and head home.

I arrive at the packhouse just as dinner is being served. Every pack is different. Hyacintho Lunar serves dinner every night to any pack member or guest that wants to join. So if you want to eat at the packhouse, you just have to let them know you're coming.

“Alpha,” I greeted my father.

“Shawn, did you register for your classes today?” He asked.

“Yes, sir. After dinner, I would like to speak with you.”

“As Alpha or as Dad?”

“Dad, of course.”

“Alright then.” And with that he walked into the packhouse and I followed.
