Chapter Two

Lukas

Lukas dreaded this trip simply because Lockwood was a town that still had a large number of humans living in it. The resort opening that he would be attending belonged to the Royal family of the American werewolves. Him in particular, so he couldn’t ditch it.

Royal family of American werewolves, hah! What a fucking joke.

He was supposedly the American Alpha King, but yet he wasn’t even given a country to rule over, it was pitiful and it was all because of the disgusting humans.

In the entirety of North and South America, he was given a measly city and a handful of towns as his territory. And yet, humans who cropped up everywhere like weed, wouldn’t let them have their little space all to themselves.

Lukas was currently seated in the back seat of the car taking him to the resort. The windows were tinted to protect his privacy. He had opted out of the entourage that was routine as the Alpha King for that very reason.

The resort, ‘Moonlight’, was a big deal as it was one of the first of its kind. It was a resort that strictly catered to werewolves and if Lukas hadn’t run the risk of running into a human while he was in Lockwood, he would have actually looked forward to it.

Moonlight was at the edge of Lockwood, nestled in the evergreen trees that were the beauty and pride of the town. There were naturally occurring lakes in the woods as well, so it was the perfect natural spot for building a resort.

The event would carry on till well into the night, so Lukas had already been lodged in one of the Master's suites for the night.

Lukas’ handsome face settled into a cruel expression, his blue eyes going cold when he looked out his window. He would keep trying to get the bill passed to prevent humans from living in werewolf-designated areas. The same was done to them, so he couldn’t understand why it didn’t apply to humans as well.

Claire

“Rachel, wait!” Claire called out breathlessly, but her friend kept pulling her. “I wanted to see the town, not the woods!” She kept complaining as Rachel kept a tight grip on her, pulling her in the direction of the woods.

She was relieved that she had decided to leave her bike at Rachel’s house because, with how abruptly Rachel had pulled her away, she would be forced to leave her bike on the streetside.

They had been walking down the street when Rachel suddenly stopped and let out a high-pitched scream out of the blue and immediately started dragging her in the direction of the woods.

“We can always go hiking some other day, Rachel!” Claire pulled back harder, she already had enough of Rachel’s strange behavior.

If her old friend wanted to go to the woods, that was on her. Claire was returning to the town all by herself, she would do her own sightseeing if it came down to it.

“At least tell me where you’re dragging me to.” She scolded, visibly upset.

It was such a surprise to see sweet Claire so upset that Rachel regained her senses. “I’m so sorry, Claire.” Rachel apologized immediately. “I just remembered that the Alpha King would be coming to town today and I had to sneak in to get a glimpse of him.”

Claire teasingly rolled her eyes. “Because you believe that you’ll turn out to be his Fated mate and he’ll sweep you off your feet to his mansion in the city.” She repeated what she had heard Rachel say so many times.

She couldn’t understand how Rachel could believe in something like that. She was a hopeless romantic at heart, but she couldn’t bring herself to believe in Fated mates. She had long decided to accept it as one of the quirks werewolves had.

“Of course, other female werewolves will be doing the same.” Rachel said with a very serious expression, her big brown eyes wide with excitement. “Think of it as your human Cinderella fairytale, we all believe that we will be the lucky ones to fit in the glass slipper.”

Claire couldn’t argue this, not when Cinderella had been used as an example. “The Alpha King will be in Lockwood? Am I allowed to be here? I’m human after all.”

Rachel scoffed. “You’re a resident of Lockwood, there’s nothing wrong with you being around.”

Claire couldn’t help but admit that she was also curious. There weren’t many monarchs left in the human world, presidents and governors had taken over.

“Where will we see him?” She asked curiously. They were a street away from an entrance to the woods, that was how far Rachel had dragged her.

“There’s a resort opening soon. If we hurry, we can catch him while he’s going in.” Rachel explained with barely concealed excitement, her dark brown ponytail bouncing up and down as she jumped.

Claire wasn’t that excited but she would tag along with Rachel, just because she also wanted to see the Alpha King in person. She had seen him a handful of times in the media and she could understand why every single lady wanted to be his Cinderella.

She entertained no such thoughts though, because she was human. There was no way the King of werewolves would choose her over his kind and that was fine with her.

Her future plans were to get her degree, move back with her parents and find a sweet man to marry her. Someone who would be kind and gentle with her, the Alpha King was very far from that fantasy.

“Do you know where it is?” Claire asked, letting Rachel take her hand to pull her again. Her friend had always been very energetic.

“Of course! Come with me!” Rachel cheered, pulling Claire behind her.

Claire laughed softly and shook her head, letting herself be dragged into the woods. “Like I have a choice.”

Sounds of nature filled the woods, the trees and flowers blooming in spring.
