Chapter 3 Encounter

Sasha.

It was a boring and stressful day. I had the most strenuous day at work today, it felt like the world decided to have lots of accident casualties today and I was on my heels all day. The hospital had to deploy all the nurses and doctors they had on the seat, and I was among them. The casualties kept on piling up and we had to keep treating them and fighting for their lives. That was the job I had signed up for, to save lives, and I took great pride in it. I am a doctor by profession and heart. I have passion and enthusiasm to save lives and I knew I had to continue that line after high school, so unlike other girls who tried to go for one job or the other or go for a less expensive course, I had gone to a med school without no one to sponsor me.

First, it was on scholarship because I studied hard for it but later I had to work part-time to pay off some pending expensive that made me lose focus and failed few practical, so my scholarship was dropped and I had to work for my college fees too. If my parents were alive, it might not be the same because I know they would have supported my dream and help me with whatever they can but they aren't and they are also the only children of their parents. I only have my grandparents and they are old and aged, and they are also managing. So I was on my own during my med school.

"Sasha, look at your eyes. You look like -

"A walking zombie? Don't say it, I know." I interrupted my colleague with a thin smile as I grabbed my flask on the desk before I sank into the leathered chair and felt my whole muscle weakened in fatigue.

"If not for you today, we would have more bodies in the mortuary than alive and able-bodied people in the ward." Another colleague of mine chipped in and I smiled at them.

"We are doctors, and this is our job. If we don't it lack around, we will be losing our jobs and humanity." I replied in a calm voice and they both smiled embarrassingly at me. I know they were fawning over me so I could feel special and unique but I don't know why I would feel special because I saved people.

"Doctor Sasha Collins, the chief physician, requires your attention." I heard a nurse call at me and I stood up after giving my colleagues a gentle and short smile.

I could feel the nurses and my fellow colleagues looking at me with admiration, some with envy, others with appraisal or shock but I didn't let it get to me and quickly made my way towards the office and gently knocked on the door.

"Come in," I heard our chief physician's calm and soothing voice coming from inside of the office, and I quickly unlocked the door. Our current chief physician was the youngest inchief and consultant I've ever worked with and he's gentle, calm, and thoughtful. He's passionate about human lives and he would rather utilize all the doctors and nurses rather than let a single patient lose his/her life. That was one of the best characters about him and I find it very appealing.

"I heard about your heroic conduct today, you must be so tired." The chief physician asserted slowly as he raised his head up at me with a gentle smile and I shook my head in denial

"No sir, it was my job. If I don't -

"Yeah, I understand. If I am correct, you've never taken a leave or a short vacation since you start working, right?" He interrupted my sentences before I could finish but I still plastered a smile on my face as I replied to him.

"No, sir. I haven't."

"Well then, you can take the rest of the month off, you need to rest and get back in shape," he said to me and I shook my head instantly.

"No sir, I have nothing to do at home, and I'm not tired. I don't need a vacation." I immediately rejected but he gave me a look that indicated that it wasn't up to me.

"Alright, sir," I mumbled after a while when I saw that he wouldn"t yield. Well, I might just go and see my grandparents then, they would be thrilled to see me, I may not have another vacation for the next two years. It was really surprising though, our current chief physician wasn't the kind of person that gives vacation and he wouldn't even give if anyone asks nicely and I don't see a reason why he was giving me one when I didn't ask for it.

After I got back to my office, I started packing the little stuff I would need in case of an emergency or anything, while I felt my colleagues gawking at me. I know they wish they were in my shoes and I also wished I was in theirs.

'It's gonna be a long holiday," I whispered under my breath as I stepped out of the hospital with a few bags in my hand.

I was on the way to my house when I saw the failing brake light of a car and my eyes widened in shock and I instantly drove closer to the scene. There was a lot of blood flowing from the car to the expressway and the car looked like it was bashed from the front. I looked around to see if I could find anyone to help me with the driver whose head was laying on the steering of the car, battered and opened. I instantly shredded a piece of my lab coat and wrapped it around the patient"s head to stop the bleeding and I instantly dipped my hands into my lab coat to take my phone and call 911 but I realized that I had dropped it in my car.

"Sa...ve, please save..me." I heard the patient murmurs and my heart swelled with compassion and kindness. I knew I couldn't leave him here but he was too big for me to carry. Intending to go back to my car to get my phone, he suddenly gripped my coat and I looked at him in shock.

"Don"t leave...me..here," he murmured and I nodded my head as I helped him up because the cloth I wrapped on his head was already drenched again with blood.

"I won't, I will save you, " I responded and gently picked him up when I saw that his eyes dropped as he was slowly losing consciousness.

"Hey, you need to stay conscious."

"Hey, come on. You can't die on me!." I yelled as I gripped him and started giving him the fastest CPR to bring him back to life as his breathing was already declining. Out there in the expressway, I did all my best to bring him back to life and hijacked him from death before I could finally heave a sigh of relief but after gasping back to life, he painted immediately.

"Hey,"

"Hey, don"t faint on me,"

"Hey, patient. Wake up!"

I called out but he didn't open his eyes again until I finally dragged him to my car, I had contemplated about calling 911 after got to my car but the man had clenched on me subconsciously and I had no choice than to took him back home to monitor, regulate his breathing and treat the remaining wounds on his body. He slept soundly at the back of my car and I would have thought he was dead if not for the rapid and slow breaths I could see anything I looked back at him.

His physical features were quite appealing even with the blood on his face and the injuries in his body.

"He must be a handsome fellow," I thought after taking the last glance at him as I pulled into my drive away. I knew I had to check his blood group and see if it matches mine because he needs some blood urgently and he might be dead for real if I don't do something about it very fast.

The handsome patient didn't wake up until the next day after I was done bathing and tidying up his injuries and transfusing some blood to him since we are very compatible.

"Who are you?" I heard a low, deep voice mumble and I instantly remembered that it was the patient voice, I mean who else can it be.

"You are awake?" I asked with a smile as I hurriedly went closer to the man lying down on the won't available bed in the whole house. Last night, I slept on the couch so he could be comfortable. My house wasn't that big, it was self-contained since I still had to pay my college loan.

"Obviously, " I heard the patient murmurs and I briefly rolled my eyes at him.

"What"s your name?" I asked in a calm voice as I grabbed a stool to sit in front of me and he looked at me in confusion.

"My name? What is my name?" he threw back the question at me in confusion and I stared at him in shock.

"Yes, you don't have a name?" I asked again, in a shocked tone as I stared at his handsome and bewildered face.

"I don't know. I don't remember, " he replied in a confused tone and it suddenly dawned on me. He must have suffered from a brain injury that altered his memories.

"Do you remember anything? Faces, names of anyone? Do you remember how you got into the accident?"
