Chapter 8 Marrying the Lockwood's Son (Part 8)
"I was reading Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice' last night and got carried away. That's why I overslept. I'm sorry that you had to see me like this," Adeline explained.
Hearing that, Martha looked at Adeline with admiration, and she said, "It's a classic. I heard from your father that you major in arts?"
Adeline nodded, "Yes, I'm studying performance arts. I really hope that I can continue with my studies after I'm married. I know that this career will bring criticism, but I really do enjoy acting."
As soon as Adeline finished speaking, Zoey's voice rang from the front door, "Mom, Dad! I'm home!"
Noticing the strange look Martha gave, Helen immediately said, "That's my younger daughter, Zoey. Growing up, she's always this bubbly. Adeline is different. She's gentle and graceful!"
"Cheerful girls are nice!" Martha said. Then, she stood up, and continued, "Since I've already brought the betrothal gift here, I'll leave for now. We'll send a car over to pick Adeline up tomorrow morning so that she can visit Christiano. You should meet your future husband beforehand since you're going to marry him soon."
"Thank you, Mrs. Lockwood!" Adeline meekly replied. Martha smiled at her obedience and left.
When Martha had left, Zoey began to mock Adeline, "You're really something, Adeline. I've only been out for half a day, and you're marrying Lockwood's son?"
With a smile, Adeline turned back to look at Zoey and said, "Why? Do you want to be part of the Lockwood family? If so, I'll gladly give you the honor."
Zoey was unbothered. She had just returned from a date with Sebastian, so she was in a chirpy mood.
Thinking how Adeline was about to marry someone in a vegetative state, which was the same as dead in her eyes, Zoey snickered and said, "You deserve nothing but the best, Adeline. I already have someone I love. Once I turn eighteen, we'll be engaged!"
"Is that so? Congratulations then!"
"You should really congratulate me. Because the person I'm going to marry is someone you know too," said Zoey. Then, she stared at Adeline and delivered every word with emphasis, "He is Sebastian."
"Oh, yes, the eldest son of the Lawson family. I give you my good wishes."
"Aren't you sad?" Zoey walked towards Adeline with a cold smile, "I know that you had dated Sebastian for almost two years."
Adeline's heart throbbed in intense pain.
Still, she pulled herself together, looking at Zoey with pride. "Really? Then I definitely should send my best wishes to you. After all, it requires courage to take something that others don't want!"
