Run Away

At Richard Carter's residence.

"I once believed in you that you were able to look after our father. It turns out I was wrong. You let other people kill him," said Chris after they buried Richard Carter's body.

"Who would have thought it would happen like this," Joe retorted fiercely. "Besides daddy didn't tell me where he was going when it happened. You know daddy doesn't want his son to follow him when he goes somewhere."

"You...." Chris glared at Joe while clenching his fist, then he wanted to attack Joe back with a heavy punch. However, he abandoned his plans.

"Are you going to hit me again?" challenge Joe bravely. This time she wasn't going to let her brother touch her a second time.

"Apparently dad has made a mistake all this time. He shouldn't have raised you because you're completely useless," said Chris, blatantly insulting Joe.

Joe ground his teeth. His hands clenched tightly. His heart felt exploding. Had she not thought of the mourning period, she would have thrown her fist at her proud brother's face.

“Is what you said not wrong? I think the opposite is true. Actually daddy failed to raise you because all this time you couldn't do anything without him,” Joe replied, not wanting to be outdone. Since yesterday he had only been quiet after Chris cornered him. But now she wasn't going to let Chris have his way anymore.

Chris's face flushed instantly. He took a few steps toward Joe. His original intention was that he wanted to hit Joe, unfortunately he couldn't because Joe managed to fend off his punch.

“Yesterday I let you touch my face. But, not for now." Joe glared at Chris, then brushed his brother's hand away roughly. After that he went away.

Joe decides to leave his father's house. Facing his older brother in such a heated situation made his blood boil. If he didn't remember that Chris was his brother, he would have killed Chris. Chris had always shown obvious hostility towards him.

Joe reached his house after traveling for an hour. The house looked deserted. Looks like his men are resting. He decided to enter his room. His body felt tired, and he needed time to rest.

"Are you home, Boss?" asked Antonio, Joe's portly bodyguard.

"Yes.... Today is our last day of mourning," Joe replied in a deep voice. "I wanted to get home fast because I had nothing else to do. Plus Chris was there. I'm never wanted around."

"But, Mr. Richard thinks otherwise. He is very proud of your achievements so far," praised Antonio sincerely.

Joe smiled slightly after hearing Antonio's praise which he felt was excessive. He has indeed managed to establish a successful shipping and aviation business. It's just that his father never praised him for his achievements so far.

"That's just your invention. I know how my father treated me all this time," said Joe.

"I'm telling the truth. Mr. Richard does look very cold when he's in front of you. But, when he's behind you, he always compliments you," said Antonio.

Joe didn't reply to Antonio's words. He decided to quickly go into his room. What he needs now is sleep.

The next day.

"How? Have you gotten an answer from that girl yet?" asked Joe while enjoying his breakfast to Antonio.

The guard shook his head weakly. "She's still keeping his mouth shut. Even for the past few days she hasn't touched the food I've given him."

Joe clenched his fists on the table. He groaned loudly, frustrated at not being able to get what he wanted. He couldn't just let his father's killer get away with it. The girl must pay for all her deeds.

"Let me see him now," Joe said, and pushed back his chair. He walked quickly following Antonio who walked in front of him.

"Do you know what her name is?" asked Joe when they reached the connecting hall with the room where he kept the girl.

"Her name is Briana, Boss. The rest I don't know because she doesn't talk much."

Antonio opened the padlock deftly. Slowly he pushed the door open wide. A beam of light entered inside, and gave a bit of light to the room.

Joe stepped slowly. He approached the girl named Briana. Briana was no longer sitting in a chair with her hands tied. Briana is now lying on the floor in a curled up position and hugging her knees.

"Hey...Wake up!" Joe ordered while lightly kicking Briana's leg several times.

Briana didn't move. He seemed unbothered by the noise and Joe's kick. His body looks stiff.

Joe crouched in front of Briana. His hand touched the girl's forehead. High fever. He chose Antonio.

"He has a high fever," Joe told Antonio.

"What should we do, Boss?" asked Antonio confused.

"Immediately you take a basin of cold water and a washcloth to compress his forehead. After he wakes up, then we will think about the next course of action," Joe ordered firmly.

Even though Briana had killed his father, Joe felt sorry for the girl. Briana looks helpless. In addition, Joe will not let Briana die easily before Briana tells who ordered Briana to kill her father.

Briana woke up a few hours later. She tilted her head, then held it because she felt a terrible headache. Her eyes caught a small crack from the door in the room. She suspected someone had left the door unlocked.

Brianna smiled broadly. Looks like now is the chance for her to escape from this place. Briana tried to lift her body. She couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Briana managed to leave the house even though she was dragging her feet. After walking quite a distance, she stopped briefly when she realized she had no idea where she was going. The road she was walking was very quiet, and it was in the middle of a forest. She hesitated to continue her journey. She suspected that she might encounter danger ahead.

"You won't be able to go any farther."

Briana heard a voice behind her. Without looking she already knew who the man was. Who else if not the second son of Richard Carter. He is Joe Carter.

"Stop right there," Briana pleaded. She glanced briefly, then strained his ears. She could faintly hear the sound of the river flowing.

"Don't try to run away because your strength is already drained," replied Joe.

Briana flinched. She stepped slowly. Then she tried to run as hard as she could towards the direction of the river. She ran in a zig-zag to outwit Joe who was chasing her.

When she reached the cliff above the river where the water was flowing fast, Briana stopped for a moment. After that she threw herself into the river. Her body immediately fell into the river, then washed away by the river currents.

"Briana...." Joe shouted, then followed Briana, falling into the river.
