Chapter 1 - Prologue

I never could have imagined ending up where I was. It was hard to comprehend that every moment of my life had led me to this intense battle. Instead of dwelling on how I got here, I focused on the man I loved, the one fighting valiantly to protect me. If only I could pinpoint the moment that started it all. Now, all I could do was watch helplessly as blow after blow landed on his battered body. I silently prayed that each strike wouldn't be his last.

How my family orchestrated this situation remained a mystery. I had no clear understanding of how they manipulated the events of my life. But at that moment, none of that mattered. Survival was all that counted. I desperately tried to tap into the power within me, but without understanding how it worked, I could only witness the relentless assault on our small town.

Witches fought bravely, but they fell one by one in their clashes with the horde of monstrous creatures. Each time a witch perished, Hyacinth's cries of sorrow pierced the air, fueling the bloodlust of the vile beings. The battles grew increasingly grotesque with each kill, as Hyacinth retaliated with devastating spells.

"Watch out!" I involuntarily screamed as one of the creatures lunged at him from behind. He reacted swiftly, rolling and crushing the monster before it could harm him. My cry revealed my position, and suddenly, a dozen of the monsters turned their attention toward me. They crawled over the walls, determined to breach the defenses and reach me. Fear gripped my heart, sending a cold shiver down my spine. I frantically searched for an escape route. Leaving him behind was the last thing I wanted, but it seemed like the only option. Staying would only be a fatal distraction.

One of the hideous creatures seized the opportunity and leaped toward me. Its elongated arms are outstretched, claws ready to tear into my flesh. Without a moment to react, a surge of power erupted from within me. It unleashed like an atomic blast, propelling the monsters violently through the air, away from my loved ones and allies. It was the most powerful energy I had ever felt, but I had no control over it. A scream tore from my lips as the power burst forth, snapping my head back with its force, draining my life force. With my gaze fixed on the stars, it felt as if I were saying goodbye for the last time. Thoughts of my mother, father, and him flooded my mind. A tear escaped my eye before darkness enveloped me, and the energy finally subsided, leaving me almost lifeless, collapsing to the ground.

But as always, he was there to catch me. "I knew I'd see you again," I whispered, summoning the last remnants of my energy to open my eyes and see his beautiful face one last time.

"I've got you, baby. You're okay. You're going to be just fine. I'm here. I've got you," he reassured me through tears as the darkness swallowed me. "No, no, no! Charlie, hang on!" His cries echoed in the blackness as I sank deeper, too weary to fight it.

Another presence, faintly discernible, seemed to be with him. The sweet abyss beckoned, and I succumbed to its gentle embrace. The noise of the battle dissolved into nothingness, and my life was slipping away, losing all connection to the world. Hours, or perhaps moments, passed, and I could no longer feel my body, my connection to him, or anything in the dark.

Then, suddenly, a light appeared. It was faint at first, distant and feeble, but it steadily grew closer, inching toward me. A figure emerged, a woman whose identity eluded me initially. Only when she drew near enough to touch, if touch were still possible for me, did I recognize her.

"Charlie, my darling girl!" she whispered.

"Those corrupted souls were only the vanguard, the initial skirmish in a long and bitter war. We must prevail, for we cannot let them destroy this world. I won't allow it. But to win, you must survive. So, awaken, child. I shall join you soon. Take a few days to recover with your mate. I will come to Applewood shortly. Now, wake up, Charlie!" Her laughter reverberated as I was violently pulled out of the darkness.

Chaos continued to reign around me as my senses were overwhelmed, bombarding me with too much information.

"Hmm, what happened?" I mumbled, my mind foggy and disoriented as the world rushed back into focus.

"You're alive! She's alive!" he bellowed, his words a shout of relief. But in the midst of the chaos, I couldn't determine to whom he was shouting. My body felt stiff, and my senses were overwhelmed after the preceding darkness.
