A Phone Call from the Past
Yasmine was rushing things. It was already lunch break but she was still hammering away on her computer's key board. All of a sudden, her office phone rang.
"Mam, you have an incoming call" the telephone operator announced.
"Who is it?" Yasmine wondered who would be calling her at this hour.
"He said he's your friend" the operator sounded apologetic. She knows that she should ask the caller his or her identity before passing on the call.
"Never mind, patch him through" Yasmine said impatiently. She was in a hurry to conclude conversation as she had a lot of things to do.
She thus, pinch the receiver between her shoulders and her chin and continued typing. "This is Yasmine, who is on the line please?"
"Hello, Yasmine?"
The voice on the other end was soft and mellow. Yasmine could not believe she was hearing this voice again. She was dumbfounded and could not reply. She has not heard this voice for more than 15 years! But it's a voice she heard every day for over three years, how could she not recognize it?
"Paul?" Yasmine asked in a daze.
"Yes, it's me!" Paul replied with an ovious joy in his heart.
"Paul, how? Why are you calling me? Where are you?" Yasmine's questions came one after another.
"I'm in Michigan" Paul replied.
"But how did you get this number?" Yasmine was confused.
Paul chuckled. "I have my ways!"
"Then, why are you calling me? It must be midnight over there!" Yasmine was confused.
"I don't know, I just missed you all of a sudden... well no, actually I have been thinking about you a lot lately..." Paul said in a melancholy voice.
Paul Martel was Yasmine's childhood boyfriend. If Yasmine's parents have not intervened, he would have been the guy Yasmine would have married.
But as fate would have it, when they separated the did not meet again until it was too late...
They spoke on the phone until it was the end of Yasmine's break time. Paul did not agree to end the call until Yasmine gave him her mobile number and email.
The afternoon went by in a blur. Yasmine did not know how she was able to finish her work. She was feeling giddy, excited and confused. For a while she also felt fearful and worried. Her emotions was like a roller coaster everytime she recalled the past with Paul.
