Chapter 4 The Inability to Conceive

Richard returned to the cabin, still pondering over Robert's earlier words:

"Father still has expectations for you?"

Of course, he knew exactly what Mr. Hayes' expectations were.

The Hayes family had a small number of members, with only him and Robert as Mr. Hayes' two sons.

In recent years, Mr. Hayes had become increasingly eager to have grandchildren as his health began to decline.

Although there was an older brother, Robert, above him, Robert had always been independent and capable, able to sustain himself without relying on the Hayes Group for a living.

However, he is different from Richard. Richard is weak and always listens to his family. His career depends entirely on the Hayes Group.

Even if Mr. Hayes only frowns at him, it can affect the rest of his life. He urgently needs a child to solidify his position in Mr. Hayes's heart.

However, he has been married to Nicole for five years and they have not even had a child. No wonder Mr. Hayes has been increasingly cold towards him.

Thinking of this, Richard sat on the sofa and anxiously swept his bangs aside, but at this moment, a soft body pressed heavily against his back, causing him to sway forward.

"Hayes, are you down? Look at this, is it nice?"

The girl eagerly hugged him from behind, her fair face pressed against his neck, her eyes shining like a clear spring, bright and clear.

She extended her hand, holding a folded paper heart, and presented it to Richard with a somewhat pleasing tone:

"This is for you, do you like it?"

Richard was completely uninterested in Nicole's childish tricks. He pushed her hand away and asked in a deep voice, "Did you take your medicine today?"

Nicole's smile froze on her face. Her eyes shifted left and right, and she obediently replied, "I took it."

"Took it?" Richard frowned, brushing away her hand that was hooking onto his neck, clearly not quite believing her.

He didn't say anything and stood up, walking to the nearby cabinet and taking out a bottle of medicine, squeezing it into a glass.

Nicole watched as Richard approached her with the glass in his hand. She instinctively took two steps back, hoping that he didn't mean what she thought he did.

"Drink this too," he extended the glass towards Nicole, instantly shattering her illusion.

Inside the glass, there was a black liquid with unknown ingredients, which looked very unappetizing.

"I..." She turned her head, trying to negotiate with him, "Can I not drink this? I already took it."

"No, you can't," Richard vetoed Nicole's proposal without hesitation. Seeing her reluctance, he tried to ease the tension and coaxed patiently, "It's very effective, let's give it a try, okay?"

Nicole stared at the mixture in the glass, unable to swallow it. She shook her head, her voice tinged with a plea, "Richard, I really don't want to drink that, really, please don't make me drink it, I beg you."

Seeing her persistent refusal, Richard immediately lost his patience. He put on a stern face and spoke to her in a tone of an adult admonishing a child, "Don't behave like a child, be obedient. It works very well, just take a sip."

As he said that, he forcefully held onto the back of Nicole's head to prevent her from dodging, and raised the glass, intending to pour it into her mouth.

At the moment the liquid was about to pour, Nicole smelled the strong nauseating odor emanating from the black liquid and felt disgusted. She uncomfortably pushed his hand away, her voice suffused with unease.
