Chapter 6
"Who the hell is your man?" Penelope knew she could only rely on herself.
But she was completely in the dark, especially about where this lunatic Audrey had come from.
"I'm Audrey Jones, Kelvin's fiancée. Who do you think I am? You stole my place!"
Audrey's perfectly manicured nails dug into Penelope's face, breaking the skin and sinking into the flesh.
Penelope gasped in pain.
She wasn't one to be easily bullied. She might not be able to fight Kelvin, but that didn't mean she had no temper!
Penelope lifted her head, curled her lips into a smile, and spoke with a mocking tone.
"So, you're the fiancée. So what? I'm the one married to him now. If you have the guts, make him divorce me, Ms. Jones. Can you do that?"
Even though she was kneeling, she looked like she had Audrey under her heel.
This hit Audrey's sore spot directly.
Her only wish over the years had been to marry Kelvin, to rise above everyone else.
But Penelope, this damned woman, had stolen her chance. Audrey had gone to great lengths to get Kelvin drunk, only for Penelope to benefit from it.
"Fine, let's see how long you can keep that mouth of yours!"
Audrey laughed in anger. She stood up and waved her hand. "Take this bitch away!"
Penelope struggled, but her strength was a joke compared to the two burly men.
In just a few minutes, she was exhausted and collapsed to the ground.
She couldn't let them take her away.
"Wait! This is Kelvin's company. You think you can just take me away? Aren't you afraid of pissing him off?"
Audrey hesitated, a flicker of guilt in her eyes.
But then she looked at Penelope's outfit.
She was just a lowly janitor.
"Who do you think you are? If Kelvin cared about you, would he have you cleaning toilets? Even if I killed you, he wouldn't do anything to me."
Penelope's heart sank. She hadn't expected Audrey to be this cunning. Her breathing quickened.
She looked around for help.
Everyone who met her pleading gaze quickly turned away.
No one wanted to get involved.
Her earlier confidence had come from being in Kelvin's company, thinking Audrey wouldn't dare take her away by force.
But now, Penelope was being dragged away, and everyone acted like they didn't see a thing, even the security guards.
Penelope's hands were twisted behind her back, like a prisoner.
She screamed hoarsely for help.
"Let go of me! Help! Someone call the police! Or tell Mr. Davis!"
"Let's see who dares!"
Audrey shouted, glaring at everyone. They all pretended not to see.
A satisfied smile spread across Audrey's face. "Good, you all know what happens if you cross me!"
Audrey strutted ahead, ordering her men to gag Penelope and drug her. Only then did she quiet down.
No one said a word as Audrey took her away.
Meanwhile, upstairs.
Kelvin had just signed off on some documents.
He leaned back in his chair, looking at a small bag that Penelope always carried.
He frowned, picked it up, and sniffed it. Somehow, it calmed his nerves and eased his irritation.
Kelvin habitually checked the surveillance to see Penelope.
But the lobby was as usual, except Penelope was nowhere to be seen.
"Where is she?" Kelvin called his assistant in, clearly annoyed.
Ryan, seeing Kelvin's scowl, broke into a cold sweat. He had seen Penelope in the lobby earlier. How could she disappear in an hour?
The assistant wiped his forehead and made a call. His face turned grim.
"Kelvin, Mrs. Davis was taken by Ms. Jones."
Kelvin dropped his work and cursed under his breath. "Useless!"
Even bullying a dog on his turf was a challenge to his authority.
Kelvin got up and headed downstairs. The employees felt his anger and avoided his gaze.
Kelvin's voice was cold as ice. "This is my territory. If you can't tell who's in charge, you can all go to HR and get out!"
Everyone nodded, fearfully continuing their work.
Kelvin checked the surveillance and found Audrey had taken Penelope to an abandoned factory in the suburbs. He felt a mix of emotions.
The assistant was anxious. Kelvin had seemed worried earlier. Why wasn't he rushing now?
Kelvin sipped his tea, fingers tracing the cup.
"No rush. She needs to learn a lesson."
The assistant was stunned, then realized what Kelvin meant. He was speechless. If something really happened, what then? Though unlikely, what if it did?
Meanwhile.
Penelope was awakened by a bucket of cold water. She was soaked, clothes clinging to her, limbs tied to a chair.
When she opened her eyes, Audrey was standing in front of her. Audrey held a small knife, her voice chilling.
"Penelope, you've been gone a while. Has anyone come looking for you? You think you're Kelvin's wife? You're just a dog."
Penelope lowered her head in silence, fear and dread consuming her. She bitterly smiled. It was true. She'd been taken from Kelvin's company. Someone should have noticed. But no one had come to save her. Kelvin probably wished she were dead.
Despair washed over her. She had no friends, no one to turn to. Who would save her?
Penelope tried reasoning.
"Ms. Jones, if you want to marry him, you should win him over, not kill me. You see, I'm not important to him."
Audrey's anger flared. She pressed the knife to Penelope's pretty face, just enough to break the skin.
"You're teaching me? Scared now? Beg me."
Penelope swallowed nervously. She had to survive.
"I beg you. You want to marry him, I support you. I'm not here by choice, Ms. Jones. I won't stand in your way."
Audrey pressed harder. Then she cut Penelope's ropes. She tapped Penelope's face with the knife's flat side.
"Such a pretty face. It'd be a shame to ruin it. How about this? I'll let them have you."
Audrey smirked at the three or four filthy men she'd 'carefully selected,' her expression triumphant.
"Penelope, I want you destroyed, inside and out."
Penelope trembled, her breathing rapid. She tried to reason.
"You know, Ms. Jones, even if Kelvin doesn't like me, I'm still his. He won't let you do this. Aren't you afraid of what might happen to the Jones family?"
Audrey laughed.
"Get real. I'm not some nobody like you. I'm a Jones. Kelvin wouldn't touch me."
Audrey stepped back, recording with her phone, her face twisted with madness.
"Go ahead. Let me enjoy this bitch's despair."
