+Chapter 4+

Mari had thought that she had gotten away but then she heard pounding footsteps behind her, she snuck a peak behind her and her heart immediately dropped to her stomach.

*Both Kings were chasing after her!

This was the worst possible outcome!*

She had ditched the blanket given to her in the car so that she would be able to run freely and was now wearing nothing but her skimpy nightwear and flip-flops given to her with the blanket. It was the worst possible outfit she could wear for a chase in the woods but it wasn’t like she was given a choice.

It was about mid-morning the sun warming up the previously cold morning, sun rays falling through the gaps in the trees to the leaves that carpeted the ground. She didn’t slow down, running even faster although she had no idea where she was going.

How did it all come to this? Last night she was crying herself to sleep on another lonely birthday and now she was being chased by two Kings.

What made things worse was that she wasn’t a witch but she doubted they would believe her if she said that. If the people in the town where she spent her entire life were quick to accuse her of being a witch, she didn’t have a chance with royalty.

Branches whipped at her exposed skin and she was starting to run out of breath but the sound of pounding footsteps behind her propelled her forward. There was a chance that she would get killed on the spot the moment she was caught, she was literally running for her life.

Behind her, Kade was stunned at how fast the slender alleged witch was running. She used her small size to her advantage and slipped between hedges, hiding out of sight momentarily behind trees.

He found it amusing at first but then Lucien swept past him making him increase his pace. They were essentially competing to see who would catch her first because it was more or less decided that whoever got her first would get to keep her.

He didn’t appreciate being unable to surpass Lucien, they remained neck to neck no matter how much effort they put in. They were finally able to gain on the fleeing witch when it was evident that she was beginning to slow down.

It didn’t help that she tripped while she was trying to look back at time and by the time she got to her feet again they were already mere inches from her.

Mari scrambled backward with terror in her eyes as they approached her, her back hitting the rough trunk of a tree as she lifted her hands up protectively in front of her, her eyes tightly shut.

Lucien took in the lady shivering in front of them, slowing down as they approached her. Her little flimsy white dress was ripped and stained and she sported bruises on her otherwise perfect skin, it made him frown.

He took a step even closer, about to say something to ease her terror when flames sprouted from her hands which she used to shield herself.

“Holy fuck,” Kade cursed silently, instinctively jumping backward. It was startling to find out that the tip hadn’t been wrong and they had actually found a witch.

Lucien shared the same sentiments, he knew well to keep a safe distance from the dancing red flames. They didn’t even look to hurt the witch, it matched up with the reports he got about her sleeping peacefully in the midst of a raging fire.

Mari didn’t even realize that she had started a fire with her bare hands, she only noticed that although both Kings should have gotten to her, nothing had happened. She slowly dropped her hands and opened her eyes, noticing that they were both giving her a wide berth for some reason.

Hope blossomed in her chest at this, maybe she had been the one jumping to conclusions the entire time and they didn’t think she was a witch. “I’m really sorry for running off, I did it out of fright,” She explained nervously, twisting her hands.

She kept her gaze on the soft dirt on the ground, unable to look either King in the eyes. “But I think some mistake has been made here, I’m a werewolf, not a witch…” She said the last bit desperately, looking up at them.

Both Kade and Lucien were stunned speechless by this confession, Kade breaking the silence.

“What?”

Mari couldn’t read King Kade’s tone and thought he believed her, “Yes, as I said, some mistake has been made. Yesterday was my birthday so I think I forgot to properly put out the candle, and that started the fire, not me.” She started to ramble, extremely anxious.

Kade and Lucien shared a look, quickly picking up on what was going on.

It was unheard of, but it would seem that they had found a witch who didn’t know she was one. And she wasn’t lying about being a werewolf either. They had found a hybrid.

Even when witches still ran wild, there had never been a case of a werewolf-witch hybrid because werewolves knew better than to get involved with those who had dangerous magic running through their veins.

Lucien stepped forward, “I understand, and there’s no need to be frightened, you’re not in danger.” He spoke gently, keeping his ice-blue stare fixed on her.

Mari was flustered by this attention, at first she had been too scared for her life but now that she was less frightened, it finally sank in that she was in the presence of the two most powerful figures in the West Continent.

She nodded with a small sigh of relief, “Then I’ll find my way back home, my apartment is a mess…”

Kade approached at this, his dark expression forbidding. He placed a hand on the trunk beside her head and leaned in, his black eyes empty. “I’m afraid I can’t let you do that.”
