Chapter 7 Please Present the Invitation!
Wyatt smirked cunningly. For someone who seemed tough, Darwin looked like he were about to explode under pressure.
However, he was feeling doubtful that Fiona came to the event to seduce a wealthy man. Wyatt watched Fiona passing through the crowd. Without any hesitation, it was clear where she was headed. He followed her gaze in that direction. At the end of the deck, there was a classical music band.
"Hey, isn’t that R&K’s owner, Newton?" Wyatt raised his chin in that direction.
Darwin only glanced briefly, showing no surprise.
Wyatt reacted, widening his eyes in shock. "Oh! You said you wouldn't come to this party but you suddenly showed up today. You knew that Newton would be here, and you're here to find him for the project Ms. Fiona is handling, right?"
Darwin looked at him with a gaze so cold that it could freeze someone even in the midst of summer.
"Why would a discarded substitute like her be worthy of my help? I came to the party because Bella wanted to come ," Darwin added.
Wyatt awkwardly forced a smile. Wyatt has always been a man of few words, and the more he spoke, the more he appeared guilty. After speaking, Darwin also became aware of Fiona's abnormal behavior. Annoyance and a desire to devour others were written all over her face.
Fiona didn't expect that although it was easy to find Newton, getting close to him was difficult. She was stopped by a bodyguard just a few steps away from Newton.
"Excuse me, you're not allowed to in there."
"I’m looking for Mr. Newton." Fiona spoke up.
The bodyguard remained expressionless. "If you have any concerns, you can schedule a meeting with Mr. Newton's secretary. Today, Mr. Newton is not dealing with business."
Fiona hesitated. Perhaps hearing the commotion, Newton glanced over in our direction. When he saw Fiona, he displayed a lack of interest and greed that differed from most men. His brows even furrowed with a hint of disdain.
Fiona had already investigated Newton. He came from a technical background, had an impeccable character, and had a very good relationship with his wife. Two years ago, his wife passed away, and Newton was devastated, spending almost half a year in the hospital. He wasn't interested in women and even loathed those who tried to entangle themselves with him. Fiona, who was incredibly beautiful, didn't seem like a person who did business. It was probably a misunderstanding on his part, thinking that Fiona had come to pursue him.
After saying a few words to the people around him, the others smiled and walked toward the banquet hall. Vaguely, Fiona heard Newton regretfully say to the person beside him, "That harp looks very pretty but such a waste that the organizers didn't invite a harpist instead only using it for display."
'A harp?' Fiona thought to herself.
Fiona's gaze focused on a golden harp on the music stand. She felt like it was such a coincidence because her grandmother used to be a well-known harpist. She had learned from her grandmother since she was little. Although they hadn't been in touch much in recent years, whenever she went to see her grandmother, she would play the harp for her. Her skill might not rival that of a master, but it was always pleasant to listen to.
Newton left, and the bodyguard followed, no longer blocking Fiona.
Fiona walked straight to the harp and sat down. After taking a deep breath, her delicate fingertips gently plucked the strings. The beautiful sound spread in an instant. Fiona's long hair cascaded down her shoulders, and her gaze was intently fixed on the strings as she played. Fiona's long hair scattered, her eyebrows and eyes lowered. The musical score she played since childhood had been engraved in her bones. Guided by muscle memory, her fingertips produced a melodious sound. Many people were attracted by the music and gathered to listen.
Newton also hurried back. It was strange. Just now, in Newton's eyes, this woman appeared disheveled. But now, the person strumming the harp seemed so calm and elegant. As he watched the harpist, he seemed to reminisce of the fateful afternoon forty years ago when he and his beloved first met.
Wyatt and Darwin also witnessed this scene.
"Ms. Fiona can do this too?" Wyatt remarked.
Darwin didn't speak because he also didn't know that Fiona could play the harp. The soft light draped Fiona in an aura of sanctity, her devotion making her a goddess untouchable, a stranger in his own eyes. His heart plummeted, choked by the icy grip of betrayal. Deception gnawed at him, a bitter realization five years in the making.
Harold, the handsome young man with the exotic features was carried back to his parents by bodyguards.
Today was his birthday, and originally, he should be on a vacation at the black sand beach in Iceland. However, his parents insisted on throwing a birthday party for him. They wanted him to get to know more influential people since he would have to deal with them in the future when he inherits the family business. Listening to his mother and the guests talk about business, Harold became bored. Just then, a melodious music sound started playing behind him. Instinctively, he turned his head. In the next second, his desolate eyes instantly lit up.
The melody came to an end.
Fiona exhaled a sigh of relief, pleased that she hadn't missed a single note. After a brief silence, applause erupted around him. Fiona stood up gracefully and responded to the applause elegantly. In the corner of her eye, she saw Newton walking toward her.
Just at that moment, two staff members from the cruise ship hurried over, looking fierce and menacing. "Miss, could you please show your invitation?"
Not far away, Bella looked on with glee and sneered. "You wanted to show off and attract so many onlookers. It's perfect timing for everyone to see how shameless you are. No invitation, sneaking onto the cruise ship to fish for a rich catch, how despicable."
Fiona was speechless as well. She never expected they would actually verify the invitations of the guests at this party. While she was confused, she saw Bella who seemed intentionally trying to catch her attention and squeezed forward. When she saw Fiona looking, Bella wore a triumphant expression. It was almost like she was proclaiming that she had done it, written all over her face.
Fiona's face darkened. If Bella was here, then Darwin surely be here as well.
Some of the people who had never liked Fiona began discussing loudly.
"No way, she came here to fish for a rich catch but couldn't even spare a penny for an invitation?"
"Trying to get something for nothing?"
"She’s a businesswoman, haha."
"I sensed something was off about her from the beginning. Turns out she sneaked her way up here."
"The Klein family's security is lacking. They let someone like her on board."
"Miss, please show your invitation!" As Fiona remained silent, the staff members raised their voices and scolded her harshly.
Bella was feeling quite pleased with herself watching this scene but her excitement didn't last long. When she instinctively looked back at Darwin, he had already disappeared from the second floor. Looking around once more, she saw Darwin and Wyatt had already come downstairs and were walking over in their direction. A thought suddenly popped into her head that Darwin came to rescue Fiona.
"Sorry..." Fiona helplessly spoke.
A voice sounded from the back of the crowd. "She doesn’t need any invitation."
Everyone turned their attention toward the source of the voice. Fiona also looked over, stunned, thinking why must it be him.
