Chapter 01 Meet Him Again
Before the interview began, the room buzzed with chatter.
"The young executive we're interviewing today holds the reins of the entire Xavier Luxury Group."
"I heard he went blind five years ago and was even cast out of the Xavier group. If it wasn't for his fiancée's unwavering care, he might not have been here today."
"Shh, keep it down..."
I sat to the side, maintaining a forced smile while my fingernails dug into my palms.
Suddenly, my senior colleague Big Joe turned to me:
" Madeline, go get me a glass of water, will ya?"
Approaching the water cooler at the entrance, the door was thrust open, and a familiar figure entered my field of vision, leaving my mind in utter blankness.
In three years, Lucas Xavier had transformed drastically. From a lean boy to a tall, sharp-featured man. Those once-misty eyes were now cold and clear.
"Excuse me."
His voice, detached, skimmed across me from behind the lenses, as if I were a stranger, without a pause.
He proceeded to the stage, flanked by bodyguards, trailing a brisk, woody scent.
Frozen in place, it took me a few seconds to snap back to reality.
During the two years by his side, Lucas had been at his lowest. Ousted from the Xavier Luxury Group and blinded by an accident, he couldn’t see my face.
Maybe it was for the best... I mused to myself.
When I returned with the water, the interview had already started.
Lucas sat on the stage, fingers steepled against his chin, surveying the audience with composure.
He was skillfully navigating business inquiries when the side door suddenly opened.
Nicole walked in, apologizing to Lucas with a laugh: "Sorry I'm late, Lucas. There was a little situation with the crew."
Holding up the hem of her lavish champagne-colored dress, she took the seat next to Lucas.
The room fell silent for a moment, then erupted into a buzzing and charged atmosphere.
Big Joe glanced at me with his mug in hand, an expression of discovery lighting up his face like he'd just stumbled upon the New World.
" Madeline, no kidding, but you and Nicole Zimmerman share a striking resemblance."
I pursed my lips and offered a modest chuckle, "She's a movie starlet, Joe. That's mighty kind of you."
Of course, we looked alike.
Because she was my sister, after all.
