A new crime

I could see that this hierarchical line of vampires possessed a great amount of goods, which they snatched from humans in exchange for the supposed immortality they offered them , stole museums , colonial houses , among other properties and used them to attract tourists and devour them in secret . Now I understand why the coyote wanted to stop this powerful clan, because they were undoubtedly a team of soulless predators, something I was struggling to avoid becoming.

Although Araticus seemed invincible, he seemed to have an imminent weakness, and this was the vampire hunters, apparently in the old days he had formed an army of neophytes to protect himself from them, and thus preserve his immortal kingdom.

He had an imminent privilege to hunt freely in inhospitable territories. But ironically the hunter would never like to be hunted , a predator would not like to be vulnerable prey , much less the one who calls himself the prince of vampires .

For the vampire hunters to find his hideout would destroy his plans, and those of his companions who created their own vampires, and taught them the laws before letting them loose. He believed, possibly rightly, that the Pocaterra were necessary for the survival of the vampire species, with their social statutes that kept the vampires' existence secret. And it freed them from preying on humans as they pleased, instilling terror in them and devouring them as if they were cannon fodder.

I was able to read a few more pages where it said that due to the continuous advancement and technological prowess of mankind, it had reached the point where there were already weapons in existence that could kill vampires, it was speculated that it was only a matter of time before they created more devastating constructs, which might be able to wipe out the entire vampire species on earth. And apparently Araticus was terrified that the species would be wiped out.

He had power over all things and was willing to go to any length to secure his status, even if it meant killing. He saw himself and his species as soulless monsters. This was one of the reasons he was intrigued, and perhaps somewhat restless to create as many neophytes as he could to secure his place over the centuries.

I was supremely intrigued by all the information I had found, and all the doubts that found their unique answer, when suddenly I heard the door open quickly and saw the coyote rush into the library.

"Stop what you are doing, we must go to an isolated area of the forest this instant , we have a new case of a human corpse "

Said the coyote in a hurried manner , I had no idea what was going on , but apparently the case was something serious , and I should stop reading to start seeing unpleasant things in practice.

I got up from the chair where I was lying reading , and the two of us left the library , subsequently we left the cabin , and two of the coyote's back-men joined us on the road . We all moved at a speed almost impossible to predict , in less than an hour we were in the most isolated area of the forest , but we could not get very close to the evidence of the crime that had been committed , because everything was already infested with human police , and something we could not do was to put ourselves in evidence .

We stood watching less than a kilometer away and listening to all the movement of the human policemen . I had never eavesdropped on a police conversation with such precision , it was supremely boring stuff , but we had to listen and watch them to see what conclusions they came to even if they were somewhat logical .

"I think he was bitten by some kind of animal ."

Commented one of the four policemen , who had a mini notebook in his hand , and seemed to judge everything lightly without any apparent surprise .

"I think that before coming to that conclusion so quickly, we should wait for the forensic expert to come, and be able to do a proper body search, we should take into account calling a prosecutor if necessary".

Commented the other who seemed to have more intrigue regarding the discovery of the girl's body . And by his attire he seemed to be the chief , his firm look and his tone of authority gave it to understand .

The other two policemen seemed to be rookies , because they were only dedicated to taking pictures and placing orange cones on the road to divert passing cars .

The area where the corpse lay seemed to have been hidden by a handful of leaves from the trees in the forest , it looked like a perfect trap , and it was evident that they wanted to hide the corpse very well , it seemed that the killer was a rookie like me .

"Certainly a novice did it, most likely it was a neophyte ".

Muttered the coyote in a low voice , it was obvious that he had been reading my thoughts , and that I told him not to do it again . But I guess he couldn't help it, and he wanted to make sure that I wasn't responsible for this crime.

I thought to myself, and at that moment he turned and gave me a persuasive look confirming my theories. I winked at him and continued watching.

The coyote's escorts were looking at me directly from the top of a tree, I guess maybe they thought I was some kind of threat, but knowing that the coyote could get into my head any time he wanted, I do not understand why they were predisposed to watch me, instead of focusing on what really matters, which is the corpse we came to check.

I looked away from the area where the corpse had been discovered, and I noticed that underneath there was a kind of red subfloor that was quite evident. The ground was stained bright red , it looked like a massacre had occurred , I guess the neophyte who did it was desperate , because even I when I killed the police officer did not make such a spectacle of blood .
