Chapter 5 You Have a Boyfriend?
Ophelia somehow felt that the Seraphina standing in front of her right now was almost like a stranger, and she could hardly recognize Seraphina's eyes and tone anymore.
It was clear from Seraphina's tone and attitude that if Ophelia tried to stop her from moving out, Ophelia would be a heinous sinner.
Ophelia said with deep concern for Seraphina, "You have a boyfriend? How come you didn't tell me? Don't live with him hastily before you know him well. After all, there are so many scammers out there these days.
"Don't worry, Seraphina. I'll take care of you even if you don't find a job."
Seraphina interrupted her, "Ophelia, I have the right to be happy, and you can't stop me."
Ophelia was taken aback for a second and tried to explain, "No. That's not what I meant..."
Seraphina cut her off again, "He won't lie to me. He's a CEO from a rich family. You know what? Finding a good husband is way more important than finding a good job. Once you find a good husband, you'll be taken care of for good. Women are supposed to enjoy life, while it's men's job to earn money. I'm not as capable or as pretty as you. I just wanna marry a nice man, which is enough for me."
Their values were completely different.
Now that Seraphina had said that, Ophelia found it inappropriate to stop her anymore. She said, "I'm glad to see you find yourself a nice man, Seraphina. I just want you to be happy. When are you gonna introduce us then? I'd like to see how perfect he is. He gets to take you away from me!"
"He's very busy, and I'm afraid he has no time. I'll introduce you someday when he's free. As long as you support me, I'll be happy for sure," Seraphina said. She made up a lie, for she didn't dare to let Ophelia know her so-called boyfriend was Finnegan.
Besides, Ophelia was the only reason why she got to be Finnegan's girlfriend.
"I'm all for it as long as he treats you well," Ophelia said. Then she asked, "When are you moving out? Need my help?"
In fact, Ophelia was still worried. She was determined that Seraphina must have been duped. Nowadays, there were many jerks who coaxed their girlfriends into living with them together. Once their girlfriends got pregnant, they could take control over everything.
"No. His assistant is gonna help me move," Seraphina said while peeling a potato. Then she tentatively asked, "Ophelia, you work at Abbott's Corporation as an intern. You don't get to see the group's CEO easily, right?"
"In the past, yeah," Ophelia said helplessly. "But now I might see him every day. I've been promoted to the secretarial department, and I'm his secretary now. Seraphina, I told you that earlier. Didn't you hear me?"
Upon hearing that, Seraphina panicked. She got distracted, and the potato fell to the floor. "You're his secretary now?"
Ophelia said with concern, "Yes. I was quite surprised, you know? I don't know why he chose me. Probably because he thinks I’m not beautiful, and I lied to him about having a fiancé. Guess he thinks I won't try to get something from him."
Seraphina pressed on, "Do you like him? Will you like him?"
Her reaction puzzled Ophelia, who laughed and said, "Seraphina, come on. He's the CEO, a billionaire. Nothing is gonna happen between us."
"Alright then," Seraphina sighed with relief, almost blurting out her secret.
Ophelia was confused. "Seraphina, what do you mean?"
Seraphina's eyes darted away, and she picked up the potato and started to peel it again to hide her nervousness. "He is handsome and rich, and I bet women are lining up for him. I'm just worried that you might fall for him like they do. The Abbott family is wealthy, and they don't think ordinary people like us are good enough for them. I don't wanna see you get hurt."
"Relax. I know my place," Ophelia smiled, and she didn't dwell on Seraphina's words. "People say that whoever seduces Finnegan always ends up badly. We better stay away from such high-profile CEOs like him."
She made casual remarks, yet Seraphina thought she was implying something.
Seraphina felt guilty, so in her mind, Ophelia was mocking her for her lack of self-awareness.
Also, she felt ashamed and embarrassed because of her hypocrisy. She advised Ophelia not to fall for Finnegan while she herself was trying to butter him up.
Not to mention that it was Ophelia who had given her the chance.
Seraphina dared not ask Ophelia about what had happened the night before. Even if she knew, she would pretend nothing had happened.
She had been given a chance to be with a handsome and wealthy man, and she was determined to seize it.
She thought, 'Ophelia, you said yourself you wouldn't fall for Finnegan, right? Don't blame me then.'
'I guess seizing the chance is not gonna be enough. To make sure my dream comes true, I've got to think of a way to get Ophelia to stay away from Finnegan. I don't wanna be exposed.'
Ophelia had no idea what Seraphina was thinking. Though she was nice to Seraphina, the latter was plotting against her for the sake of money!
