Chapter 7 The Princess of the Wilder Family Was Lost
Even though it was just a quick hello, Donovan knew right away—it was Riley. He knew her too well.
"Spit it out!" Donovan's voice was deep and commanding.
Riley didn't catch anything odd and went on, "I found a little girl here. She gave me your number. Are you her dad? We're at a fried chicken joint. You can come get her."
If Donovan had any doubts before, they were gone now. It was definitely Riley. His face darkened.
"Alright, I'll be there ASAP!" Donovan hung up and immediately told Paxton to get the car ready to head to the fried chicken place.
Paxton was puzzled, thinking, 'A fried chicken place? Mr. Wilder never eats that kind of food. Why would he want to go there? And why does it seem like he's even angrier since that call?'
On the other end, Riley looked at her phone after the call ended, thinking that voice sounded so familiar. But the chatter of the kids around her interrupted her thoughts, and she didn't bother to think about it further.
Just then, the server brought over their fried chicken, burgers, and sodas. "Ma'am, your order is ready. Enjoy your meal."
Riley thanked the server politely and then turned to the kids. "Alright, dig in! But don't eat too much, or you'll get a tummy ache!"
Judging by Finley's clothes, she didn't seem like she came from an ordinary family. It was uncertain whether she was allowed to eat fried chicken, but she seemed to enjoy it. Riley could only hope that it wouldn't cause any issues for her.
When Riley handed Finley a burger, Finley stared at it for a few seconds before taking a big bite. Her face lit up with joy, clearly loving the food.
Landon and Winston also started eating earnestly. Seeing Finley's satisfied expression, they joined in. "It's so delicious, right?"
"My mom said the food here is the best, and and now I know why! It's even better than what we have abroad!" Winston exclaimed endearingly.
The three of them exchanged glances and smiled contentedly.
Harper looked at Riley, asking softly, "Have you been craving this for a while too?" She knew that food abroad could never compare to that back home, and as a result, Riley hadn't been eating much and had lost weight.
Riley nodded. "I've been craving it, but it's really because the food back home is so delicious that I can't help but crave it constantly."
"So that's why you've lost weight," Harper said with concern.
Landon chimed in, "It's not just the food. She's been working long hours in the lab, not sleeping well, and skipping meals. No wonder she's losing weight!" His eyes filled with worry as he talked about his workaholic mom.
Winston joined in, "Seriously, Mom's a grown woman, yet she doesn't know how to properly take care of herself."
Hearing their cheerful conversation, Finley's face suddenly changed; she envied them for having moms.
Winston and Landon noticed her change and asked, "Are you okay?"
Finley shook her head, her eyes red, but she didn't say anything.
Seeing Finley in such a state, Riley's heart softened, and she swiftly drew her into her embrace.
Finley felt the warmth of the embrace, and her expression brightened slightly, thinking if only Riley were her mother.
Nearby, people were chatting as they ate.
"Have you heard that the daughter of the Wilder family is missing? The entire town is searching for her, and the police have deployed considerable resources. Where could such a child have gone?" one person said, full of curiosity.
