Monster Encounter

Emily dusted the sofa, she grimaced at the amount of dust that flew about, these people were sure dirty as hell. She grabbed her vacuum cleaner and set to work, within minutes the once-dirty house now stood out, the walls had been scrubbed, and the sofas had been dusted.

Emily grabbed her backpack and shouldered it, she met the person in charge who paid her, smiling Emily stood at the bus stop, waiting for the bus to take her home, still, no bus came into view, sighing, Emily put on her headphones and increased the volume to the max. It was getting dark and still, no bus had passed her by, her house was too far away to trek to. Finally, a green bus drove to where she stood, and Emily jumped in, she sat on a seat at the far end, the bus was packed with people, and everyone seemed in a bad mood, there were no smiling faces, all the faces she saw were either scowling or looking sad and resigned.

On the other side sat a dude, he wore sunglasses, and his head was slumped, Emily didn’t know why seeing this dude made her restless, he gave off creepy vibes, suddenly he turned to her and grinned, and Emily almost screamed. The dude had the teeth of a shark his mouth could have been wide enough to contain her head, and underneath his sunglasses; his eyes were a glowing red. Frantically, Emily tapped the woman beside her.

“What’s wrong?” The woman asked Emily pointed to the dude, but the woman didn’t seem to see anything out of the sort.

“Monster, that’s a monster,” Emily said, and the woman stared at Emily sadly.

“Oh dear! You should see a doctor I think you are not feeling well” the woman said and Emily shook her head, the creature was licking its non-existent lips with a huge red tongue, and saliva dribbled from its mouth.

Emily kept her eyes on the creature and when the bus came to her stop, she fled the bus and didn’t stop running until she reached her home.

Emily threw open the door and locked it, her mother raised an eyebrow.

“What’s wrong, dear?” Her mother asked and Emily crashed into a chair, gasping for breath, she stared at her mother with wide eyes.

“Monster Mom, I saw a monster,” Emily said; her mother didn’t look surprised, her eyes just hardened as if she remembered an old enemy.

“How did it look like hon?” Her mother asked, Emily stared at her surprised that her mom had not taken her for being crazy.

“He had shark-like teeth and a wide mouth” Emily explained, shivering. Her mother nodded as if she just confirmed something. Sam came out of the kitchen holding a glass of milk, he stared at Emily in concern, then glanced at his mother.

“Is she okay?” Sam asked, his mother nodded, Sam stared at his glass of milk, then offered it to Emily.

“Here, drink.” He said, and Emily shook her head.

“You should take it” she whispered, but stared at the milk longingly, Sam smiled, something he rarely did.

“You want the milk, sis, have it” he shoved the milk into her hand.

“Fine” Emily grumbled and drank it all. Sam kissed her forehead as she fell asleep, he turned to his mom, and his expression became stern,

“What happened to Emily?” He said, “And don’t lie to me Mom” he growled, His mother looked anguished.

“She saw something that would change our lives badly, I wish I could explain to you guys but you and your sister’s life would be in danger” she explained, Sam frowned.

“Danger,” he said, confused. “Why would our lives be in danger because you told us something? And what the fuck did sis see” he said, his mother frowned at the use of the word “fuck” but said nothing about it.

“She saw a monster, Sam, and yes she wasn’t hallucinating, it is real,” she said and Sam stared at her trying to process her statement.

“You are saying monsters are real, Mom, huh?” He asked.

“Yes” his mother confirmed, Sam stared at her.

“I can’t believe this” he muttered, “Why didn’t it attack her, I mean from what you said she saw the monster looked ready to feast,” Sam said.

“I don’t know, honey,” she said, I think we will have to be careful now, even you.”

Sam said nothing he picked up his sister, who sleepily slapped him; Sam smiled and carried her to her room and gently laid her on the bed.

“Wake up, Emily,” he said, Emily stirred and opened her blue eyes.

“Isn’t it midnight?” she asked, yawning. Sam gave her a small smile and pointed to the clock.

“It is just 9:00 pm,” Sam said, he stared at Emily in the eye, “Mom said you saw a monster,” he asked.

“That’s right,” Emily said, “You should see this creature, Sam, it's so………….”

“I think you are hallucinating, Emily” Sam interrupted, Emily frowned, but Sam didn’t care, how can monsters be real, “This is bullshit Emily, that can’t be true” he continued. Emily shrugged and grabbed his hand, Sam reminded Emily so much of their father, he resembled their father so much, that Emily would nearly call him “Dad”

“I wish it was not, Sam” Emily said, “You know I do not lie” she added. Sam closed his eyes, he knew Emily was not a liar, but he didn’t just want anything upsetting his little family.

“Alright,” Sam said, as he stood. “I believe you, call me at the first sign of trouble, I’ll kill any fucking monster on first sight”

“Sam!” Emily exclaimed and he raised a brow, feigning innocence.

“Stop cursing,” she said, Sam smiled slowly, Emily could see why Brooke coveted the young man.

“Can’t” he said and slipped out of the door before Emily could throw a pillow. Emily smiled, at Sam and his mood, she lay back down and slept, but not before two pairs of red eyes slipped away from the window.
