Chapter Seven
*Evelyn’s POV
As we walked to the car, our driver for the night stared at me unapologetically. I saw Grey staring as well, but his admiration had taken a turn. I saw something new in his eyes. I knew he liked how I looked, but a flash of something greener covered him. Kelly smiled at me, “Evelyn, that is such a pretty dress. I didn't know you had so many gorgeous gowns.” Her voice didn't sound so much like surprise now, but a hint of disdain. She was upset her plan to ruin my dress had failed miserably. “Oh, doll, I have a ton. I have been to so many of these get togethers. I have quite the collection.” I smiled at her sweetly, killing her with as much kindness as I could muster. Grey could no longer hold in his thoughts, “Well you could have chosen one that covered you more.” His comment made me feel good. I could tell my appearance was distracting him. He was so drawn to this side of me, a side he hadn't seen in some time. “Why don't you worry about your dance partners attire, husband.” I scoffed. How could he care what I was wearing when he was sitting there with a woman supposedly carrying his child. He didn't respond but huffed before smiling down at that very woman. Kelly had noticed how distracted Grey had become so again she started to use her sad story to steal his attention away. I didn't mind, I was focused on what I needed to accomplish for the night. It was sad though, to watch him gleam over the unborn child. She would talk about how she didn't know what she would do when she found out she was pregnant. He was all but holding her sitting there, rubbing her rounded belly, and giving her comforting words. She was blabbing about her life, her childhood, how hard it was, and it bored me. The taste of revenge was much sweeter on my lips than any words I had for her. I was ready for the ball.
When the car pulled up to the banquet hall where they were holding the ball, I intentionally allowed Grey and his charity case to exit the vehicle together. The driver reached for my hand, and I smiled at him, taking my time. I wanted to walk alone, making a clear distance between myself and the cute dance couple. The driver spoke to me, which was different, as I walked away from the car. “Have a nice night, Ma’am.” I spun towards him and smiled, “It’s Evelyn, Joe, you know that.” He smiled back and nodded at me before climbing back into the driver seat and pulling off. When I started to walk towards the door, I saw that Grey and Kelly had already made it to the mirrored glass doors. The guard had asked Grey something and he looked back at me, probably to tell him about the girl on his arm not being his wife, but she was trailing behind somewhere. What a gem! When I got to the door, the man smiled at me and opened the door ushering me inside. Once inside I could see many faces turned towards me. I know they saw my husband prancing around with some young girl who isn't his wife. I looked around to see many eyes on me. Some I recognized and some I didn't. A waiter walked towards me with a wine glass in his hand. He was staring so hard, the glass broke in his hand and scattered across the floor. The poor young guy looked so embarrassed I felt sorry for him. He had splashed me with some wine, but I tried to blow it off. I bent over to help him pick up some glass. “No ma’am, I'll get it, I am so sorry.” He was so flushed. “You are fine. Please don't worry about it.” I smiled at the boy as he scurried away. A man came to my aide right after, handing me a handkerchief. It was satin, silver lined with black initials on the bottom corner. It was expensive, which meant I needed this person's attention. “Oh, thank you!” I exclaimed softly, placing my hand on his triceps. He looked me up and down, “Is everything okay?” He asked looking from me to the waiter walking away. I nodded sweetly at him and reached him back his handkerchief. I started to make my way to the bar, still noticing all the looks and stairs.
After handkerchief walked away, another man approached me. I turned to the bartender and ordered a Jack and coke. The new man doubled my order and reached him a Benjamin. I smiled at him, thanking him for the drink. “Of course, Mrs. Hunter.” I shook my head and corrected him, “Moretti.” He looked directly at my wedding set on my hand, “I didn't change my last name. Kept my father’s name. Who just bought me this drink?” His eyes widened as I spun around in my bar stool to look around the room. I wanted to see the faces, to see which ones I should be talking to throughout the night. Alot of people were looking towards Grey and Kelly, no doubt wondering why I was not walking with my husband. Wondering why he was escorting some other woman around like it was natural to do so for a married man. “.... Davis” was all I heard the man say. I have heard that name multiple times, through conversation. He was a busy bee. I don't think he has a lot of influence but definitely might be someone of resource in the future. I tried to listen to him telling me about himself, but I could feel eyes on me. I looked around searching for them in the crowd. “Davis, is it?” I asked, before shutting him down. He investigated his drink like something in there was talking to him. “Save me a dance?” I asked before standing and taking another look around the room. “Of course,” he said practically drooling, I walked away from him only to be ambushed by another. “Evelyn Moretti?” the man said, tall, green eyes, and dark hair... His suit looked brand new. Dark blue suit instead of a classic black. This man wanted to be modern, outgrow a name, a father probably. “That’s me?” I said before he grabbed my hand and kissed it. “You must not remember me; our late father’s spoke often. We have met.” I know I tilted my head slightly looking up at him, trying to recognize him, but my memories were still quite foggy. “My name is Alexander Fossil.” His name rang in my mind reminding me of a number of heavily supervised teenage dates. I did know him. MY father had sent me out with him once at sixteen, to a movie, I think. He was nice, but our fathers were attempting to play match maker at a time that all I wanted to do was different. Normal. I wanted to be something like a veterinarian.
“Alex?” I asked to show him how I remember what he wanted to be called as a kid. He smiled and nodded. “So much for changing everything when we got older.” His eyes sparkled and he fidgeted with his watch. I made him nervous. “Yes, well I am Alexander now, and you are married to a powerful man.” I could hear the distaste for Grey in his voice. I looked over to my dear husband and Kelly along with Alex, he shook his head. “Who is that woman with him?” He asked the question I am sure many in the room wanted to know. I looked at him and smiled. I pulled a card with my number on it out of my wallet and placed it in his hand. It had my email and phone number on it. “Why don't you get ahold of me, and I will fill you in. Try to have a wonderful time, Alexander.” I stood on my tip toes and kissed his cheek. I felt him breathe in deeply before I moved away. I smiled at him before walking away. I was making rounds, many other men talking to me, trying to get me to show them attention knowing my husband was wondering around there somewhere. I smiled, giggled, and gave numbers to the leaders I felt would be good allies in my coming war. The whole time I still had the feeling of eyes on me. I walked through a group of leaders talking and looked around. At that moment, I saw a man exuding charm from head to toe. As our eyes met, he seemed to look back at me with an intense gaze.
