Chapter 2 She's Pregnant
Yvette tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, her mind consumed by thoughts of the person she shouldn't dwell on. She couldn't help but mock herself, 'Do you still think you're not embarrassing enough?'
The next morning, when Yvette woke up, the aroma of breakfast prepared by her mother, Lassie Orlando, filled the house. Her brother, Wayne Orlando, and his family had already finished their meal and left. The inviting smell of food, however, made Yvette feel queasy, and she hurried to the bathroom, retching.
Feeling a bit better, Yvette found Lassie standing at the bathroom door, frowning. "You're not pregnant, are you?" Lassie asked.
Yvette vehemently denied it, and Lassie left. A sudden wave of fear washed over Yvette. Her menstrual cycle had always been regular, but this time, it seemed to be more than ten days late.
At the hospital for a check-up, Yvette prayed that she wasn't pregnant. However, when she saw the test results displaying an HCG level of 8000, the harsh reality hit her like a ton of bricks, forcing her to confront the truth head-on.
Albert had always taken precautions, but on that final night, he seemed to lose control, his actions intense, as if he wanted to crush her. After it was over, she realized that something had gone wrong, but she was too exhausted and fell asleep.
She never expected that one moment of carelessness would lead to pregnancy.
The worst part was that Yvette experienced strong morning sickness, and Lassie soon found out about her pregnancy.
"I remember you don't have a boyfriend, so how did you get pregnant?" Lassie cried, "I was hoping you would marry a wealthy man who could help your brother and Kyle in the future, but now, you... you're pregnant out of wedlock. Will that man still want to marry you? Will he give us money? Will he abandon you once he knows you're pregnant?"
Yvette couldn't stand Lassie's appearance and couldn't help but retort, "Is my marriage just about money in your eyes?" She clenched her fists and said defiantly, "The child is my boyfriend's. He won't abandon me. We've already planned to get married. Don't curse me!"
Yvette hadn't contacted Albert in nearly a month. When she finally arranged to meet him, he didn't ask anything, just confirmed the meeting place.
Yvette chose a restaurant and reserved the table in the corner, near the window, for him. She thought, 'If I do this, he shouldn't be able to run away.'
Albert arrived soon after. He was dressed in a black overcoat, his tall figure complemented by his sculpted face. He seemed aloof, making it difficult for her to approach him. He was completely different from how he was in bed. When he embraced her, his eyes were always affectionate and focused, as if he was passionate about her, always able to captivate her.
Albert sat across from her, quietly eating. She had little appetite and ate a little.
Yvette had to admit that she felt a bit embarrassed. It was she who had said they shouldn't see each other again, but now she had taken the initiative to meet him.
As she was still contemplating how to broach the subject, she heard Albert ask, "Where are we going later?"
"What?" she asked.
"You scheduled our meeting too late, and there are no available rooms at the hotel."
Upon hearing this, she realized what he meant. When he saw her, all he could think about was being intimate with her. Perhaps, in his eyes, she was just a tool.
Yvette smiled at Albert. "Actually, I wanted to tell you something."
"Go ahead."
"It's not good news, so be prepared." She took out the crumpled test report from her pocket, carefully unfolded it, and smoothed out the creases. "I'm pregnant."
Seeing his silence and his frozen expression, she bit her lip and said softly, "That day, it broke. Do you remember?" She paused. It's yours. I... I haven't been with anyone else."
"I never doubted that," he replied.
"That's good." She breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Albert, who was sitting across from her.
Albert's brows furrowed. Perhaps the news was too sudden, causing him to lose his usual composure. Finally, she saw a human expression on his face.
After a moment of thought, Yvette said solemnly, "I want this child. If I decide to keep it, it will need a legal identity." She felt that she couldn't be too forceful and added, "Of course, I can't force you. If you're unwilling, I'll find a way."
Yvette regretted her decision to feign magnanimity and give Albert time to ponder.
Nine days elapsed without Albert's response, but she learned a major piece of news from Sylvia instead—Albert was getting married to Violet.
"So, Albert is the heir of North Airlines, and his grandfather is Hayden Valdemar, the leader of North Airlines. I used to think he liked Violet because of her status, but he's actually the one with the higher status. No wonder Violet became a pilot for him," said Sylvia.
Yvette suppressed the discomfort in her stomach and pressed a tissue against her lips.
"I heard that Albert's secret lover is also from our company. I wonder how she feels when she hears this news. She slept with Albert but couldn't be with him. What a pity," Sylvia continued with that.
Yvette couldn't hold it in any longer and vomited.
Albert's flights had been fully booked recently, and he had been away for more than a week. He returned today but didn't have time to reply to Yvette.
He had dinner with his colleagues from the same crew, and he was about to pay the bill so that he couldn't leave early.
It was getting late, and Albert kept checking his phone, wondering what time the medical center closed, unsure if he would be able to meet Yvette.
They had slept together for two years, but this was the first time he realized that he was not familiar with her as a person, only with the sensitive spots on her body.
Albert lowered his head, contemplating whether to call Yvette, when she suddenly appeared in front of him.
She was having dinner with a man, sitting on the next step to Albert's right. Due to the angle, she didn't notice that Albert was less than ten feet away from her.
Yvette had applied delicate yet subtle makeup, highlighting her facial features. She was wearing a white coat that accentuated her slender figure, making her look elegant and charming. As soon as she sat down, almost all the men nearby instinctively cast glances at her.
The man across from her was average-looking, even a bit unattractive, and his gaze towards her was filled with undisguised greed.
They were talking right next to Albert.
"Why did you think of me? I used to ask you out, but you never came."
He teased, "Did you suddenly realize that I'm better, so you came to pursue me?"
She said softly, "Can I?"
Albert's hand tightened around his glass.
The man fell silent. She might have been anxious as her speech quickened. "I heard that your family wants you to get married as soon as possible. Can you marry me? I'm in a bit of a situation now; I'm pregnant and need to get married. I know this request is unreasonable, and it's absurd for a man. I don't really want to get married. You just need to help me deal with my mom. I have a new car in my name, worth tens of thousands of dollars. If you're willing to help me, I'm willing to transfer ownership to you as compensation..."
Upon hearing this, Albert could no longer sit calmly.
The temperature in Luken had dropped sharply that week, with cold winds and drizzling rain outside, brushing against Yvette. She stood on the wet and cold cement, shivering, unable to speak.
She never expected to meet Albert here, let alone that he would suddenly call her out. Looking at his tall figure, she felt a sense of discomfort in her chest.
Albert was never truly hers—no, he had never belonged to her. Even with his child growing inside her, he did not want her.
After a while, Albert, who had been facing away from her, finally turned around. He stood tall, and when he spoke to her, he looked down at her, causing her to feel somewhat oppressed. Yvette involuntarily shrunk her shoulders.
After a long time, Albert, who had his back to her, finally turned around. He was tall, and when he spoke to her, he would look down at her, making her feel a bit oppressed. Yvette couldn't help but shrink her shoulders.
"So, this is what you meant by finding a solution?" he sneered. "You're pregnant with my child, and you plan to marry someone else casually? And you want to give him a car?"
Yvette was taken aback to realize that he had heard all her words, and she instantly blushed with embarrassment. She blinked and bit her lip, appearing pitiful and helpless.
After a long pause, she finally spoke in a low voice, "I have to find a way to solve this."
Albert frowned, lowered his head, and said in a calm voice, "Let's get married."
