Chapter 2 Fired for Watching a Promo

A more natural phrasing could be: Red-eyed Rabbits were a breeze to hunt, but they barely gave players any experience points. They mainly dropped quest items—Red eyes—and it was a rare occasion to even see them drop the game's common currency, Copper Coins.

But Alan was tirelessly hunting them, as his main goal was to accumulate his character's health points.

As long as his character's health points increased, his attack power would naturally go up as well.

Moreover, Alan knew of a hidden reward in the novice village—when submitting the Red-eyed Rabbit, if you increased the required one hundred Red-eyed Rabbit eyes to ten thousand, you could get a special skill. This skill could expand the range of normal attacks, and when maxed out, it was said to increase the range by fifty percent.

This might be insignificant for classes like mages and priests, but for Alan, an archer, it was extremely useful.

With his character's attributes stacking up and obtaining this skill to increase attack range, he could then implement his next plan.

The game system kept sending alert sounds.

[You have killed a Red-eyed Rabbit; experience points +1.]

[You have killed a Red-eyed Rabbit; experience points +1.]

He could stack two health points every three seconds, which meant forty health points per minute. After accounting for the time spent maneuvering around and the gaps between monster deaths, Alan could average thirty health points per minute.

At first, Alan needed twelve arrows to kill a Red-eyed Rabbit, but later, he only needed ten, eight, and then five arrows.

When he only needed five arrows, the system notification sounded.

[Your talent, The Hand of God's Retribution, has been upgraded to 2 stars.]

[The Hand of God's Retribution (Super Divine Level): 2 stars.]

[Effect 1: Each normal attack deals true damage equal to 2% of your health.]

[Effect 2: Each normal attack permanently increases your health by 2 points.]

[Proficiency: 0/100000.]

With the talent upgrade, Alan only needed three arrows to kill a Red-eyed Rabbit.

Fortunately, more than eight hours had passed in the game, and there were no other players in the area where the Red-eyed Rabbits were located. Otherwise, Alan would likely have been surrounded by many players.

During this process, Alan smoothly leveled up to level two, gaining five free attribute points that he could freely allocate to his character's attributes.

He put all the free attribute points into attack speed, increasing it from 0.63 to 0.73.

Although it was an improvement, it was still far from enough.

'Equipment and free attribute points; these are what I lack now.'

Alan thought to himself, and at the same time, an arrow flew out, hitting a Red-eyed Rabbit not far away.

A "-30" appeared above the Red-eyed Rabbit's health bar.

With the increase in health points and talent, Alan's normal attack damage was now quite impressive.

Killing a Red-eyed Rabbit with three arrows increased his efficiency, but it also meant he needed to frequently attack new Red-eyed Rabbits, slowing down his attack progress.

Originally, he could perform thirty normal attacks per minute, but now it was different. He could only perform twenty normal attacks per minute.

Fortunately, with the talent upgrade, each normal attack increased his health by two points, adding up to forty points per minute, more than before.

However, Alan now faced a problem: killing level-1 monsters at level 2 did not yield experience points.

In Ragnarok, except for game dungeons, stage bosses, and a few special monsters, killing monsters below your level did not grant experience points.

Without any hesitation, Alan chose to continue farming Red-eyed Rabbits here, solely for that special skill that increased attack range.

Two hours passed in the blink of an eye.

Alan's level was still two, but his health points had increased from the original 100 to 4800.

This was an incredibly terrifying boost.

At this stage, even those level-5 warrior characters who only increased their health attributes should have around 500 health points.

In Ragnarok, different classes had different attribute point bonuses.

For example, for an archer, one free attribute point increased attack speed by 0.02, while for other classes, it's 0.01.

For a warrior, one free attribute point increased health by 20 points, while for other classes, it's 10 points.

Specifically, warriors tended to have double bonuses in health, physical defense, and magic defense.

Archers tended to have bonuses in attack power, attack speed, and critical hit.

Assassins tended to have bonuses in attack power, movement speed, and critical hit.

Mages tended to have bonuses in spell power, magic points, and movement speed.

Priests tended to have bonuses in spell power, magic points, and movement speed, similar to mages.

Therefore, the direction of free attribute point allocation varied for different classes.

However, relying solely on free attribute points from leveling up was like a drop in the bucket; equipment bonuses were also needed for a comprehensive attribute boost.

Looking at the equipment Red Eye collected in his backpack, he had only gathered about 1,600, still far from the ten thousand needed.

But Alan wasn't worried at all because now he could eliminate a Red-eyed Rabbit with a single arrow, making it much easier to collect Red Eyes later.

At this moment, Alan received a message from an external device.

Alan glanced at the game time; he had been playing for ten hours, and it was probably a call to log off and eat.

Coming out of the game control pod, James excitedly said, "Alan, this game is so realistic; it's like another world."

As they talked, they walked towards the dining hall.

DreamChase Club was one of the three major gaming clubs in Tideport. Alan and James were just low-level employees engaged in-game currency trading.

But for James, having food and accommodation covered, getting paid, and being able to play games was the best thing in the world.

There were a dozen others eating in the dining hall; all low-level employees engaged in in-game currency trading at DreamChase Club.

Once everyone was present, a pot-bellied middle-aged man walked in, followed by a long-legged secretary in black stockings.

DreamChase Club's general manager, John Johnson, also known as Big Mouth John, had no gaming talent but talked a lot all day long.

"Today, Ragnarok's servers opened, and you've been in the game for ten hours. Report your levels and game currency earnings from left to right."

"Level 4, forty-five Copper Coins."

"Level 4, fifty-three Copper Coins."

"Level 4, thirty-two Copper Coins."

One by one, they reported their status, almost all at level 4.

Finally, it was James' turn, and he smugly said, "Level 5, two Silver Coins."

John, who had been indifferent, suddenly looked up, a bit surprised, and finally nodded, saying, "Not bad."

Alan kept his head down, eating, and James nudged him, "Alan, it's your turn."

"Level 2, fifteen Copper Coins."

The drop rate for level 1 Red-eyed Rabbits was really low; Alan had killed over a thousand and only got that many Copper Coins.

Hearing this, John slammed his hand on the table.

"Alan, what's going on? Everyone else reaches level 4, and you're only at level 2?"

"I got delayed due to a promo," Alan said truthfully.

"You were watching a promo?"

"Game time is so precious in the early stages, and you were watching a promo."

John berated him harshly.

"Alan, the club doesn't keep slackers. We don't need useless people like you. Pack your things and get out now!"
