Chapter 2 Proposal
Realizing how ambiguous their position was, Abigail immediately blushed. She quickly stood up, feeling a bit embarrassed, and explained in a soft voice, "No, my legs fell asleep."
Gregory responded with a pleasant chuckle, though it was unclear whether he believed her or not. His gentle and deep voice had a calming effect. Abigail felt herself being swayed by it. She liked his voice. She rubbed her ears curiously and asked, "Mr. White, how did you end up here?"
Gregory answered without a change in expression, "I happened to pass by."
He saw this poor woman standing by the road in the rain, looking helpless and wronged, like an abandoned cat. Abigail nodded in understanding but didn't know what to say. She had just experienced a betrayal, feeling physically and mentally exhausted. All she wanted was to find a place to calm down.
Gregory glanced at her and asked, "Do you want revenge?"
"What?" Abigail looked at him in confusion, not understanding the meaning behind his words.
Gregory seemed to have understood her confusion and patiently asked, "Roman betrayed you. Are you going to let him off the hook?"
Abigail's expression changed drastically, becoming alert. "How do you know about that?"
If Gregory knew about this, then did the other members of the White family know, too? If that were the case, then all the harsh words she had said in front of Roman and Jessica would become a joke.
Gregory glanced at her with a faint smile. "I'm willing to help you out, but I do have conditions. You might want to hear me out first."
Abigail raised her eyebrow, curious about what he had in mind. "What conditions?"
Gregory's voice was calm and composed as he replied, "I need a wife, and you seem to fit the bill quite nicely."
Abigail couldn't help but think that she must have misheard him. Gregory was an eligible bachelor, and he could have any woman he wanted. Why would he need her?
Gregory saw her disbelief and shook his head. "I'm not joking. My mother is pressuring me to get married, and I need someone to help me out. If you agree, I can help you break off your engagement with Roman."
Abigail was stunned, unable to comprehend why someone like Gregory would choose her of all people. She looked up at him in disbelief, her eyes searching for an answer.
Gregory held his umbrella up, shielding her from the rain that had started falling again. The dim streetlights illuminated half of his face while the other half was hidden in shadows. It added a touch of mystery to his already alluring figure.
With a pang of disgust towards Roman, Abigail realized that Gregory was leagues above him. Her rationality tried to reason with her, but her heart couldn't help but be swayed.
"Why me?" she finally managed to ask, her voice filled with doubt. "With your power and looks, you could have any woman you wanted."
Gregory explained, "I need someone who understands her background and can align their interests with mine. You meet all those criteria."
Abigail was hesitant, trying to decide whether to take this unexpected opportunity. But before she could make a decision, Gregory leaned in closer, his voice low and seductive.
"Don't you want Roman to respect you? And if you marry me, Jessica will have no chance of marrying him either."
Abigail's eyes lit up with a newfound excitement. The idea of marrying Gregory, which would make Roman her subordinate, intrigued her.
Glancing at Gregory, she couldn't help feeling a pang of regret.
Rumors had it that Gregory was already thirty years old and didn't have a woman by his side. People speculated that he either liked men or had some physical issues. Now, those rumors appeared to be true. No wonder he wanted to propose a marriage agreement to her. After contemplating for a moment, Abigail asked hesitantly, "Mr. White, Grace probably won't agree, right? She is still engaged to Roman until the formal cancellation of the engagement. If she marries Gregory, there will definitely be rumors." Despite Abigail's concerns, Gregory remained calm. He didn't even furrow his brows. "Don't worry, I will handle this matter."
Assured by his words, Abigail no longer had any worries and promptly agreed, "Alright, I promise you!" "Then let's go." Gregory's lips slightly curled up. He lowered his head to conceal the emotions in his eyes and opened the back door. He used his hand to support the car roof, considerately protecting Abigail's head. His gentlemanly and caring actions resembled how one would treat an intimate lover. Abigail was startled by her thoughts, her cheeks turning slightly red as she quickly got into the car. Although the vehicle had the heater on, she couldn't help but shiver. She hugged her arms, leaning against the seat, wishing she could curl up into a ball. Suddenly, a beautiful hand handed her a towel. Gregory's voice was calm, "Wipe yourself dry, don't catch a cold." Abigail expressed her gratitude and hurriedly took the towel, wiping her damp hair. The car was quiet, with only the sound of her drying her hair.
The atmosphere felt somewhat eerie. Abigail felt uneasy all over, cleared her throat, and pretended to be calm as she asked, "Are we going to get married now?" Gregory glanced at her sideways, his expression full of meaning. "We can, but are you sure you want to go like this?" Abigail followed his gaze and examined herself. Only then did she realize that her body was completely drenched and in disarray. Her cheeks immediately turned red. She felt very embarrassed. She almost forgot that she was soaked from the rain, and her white shirt clung tightly to her skin, revealing even the color of her underwear. This appearance was indeed not suitable for a wedding. Plus, did her previous tone imply that she was too eager to marry him? Would he misunderstand? Abigail cautiously glanced at him from the corner of her eye and finally sighed with relief when she saw that he remained unaffected. Leo Brown, who was driving the car, couldn't help but feel emotional as he glanced at the back seat through the rearview mirror. Gregory was acting too out of character, completely subverting Leo's previous understanding of him. In fact, they had waited outside the hotel the whole afternoon. Leo had originally come along with Gregory for a business negotiation. Still, before they even got out of the car, they saw Roman and Abigail's stepsister, Jessica, enter the hotel together.
Upon realizing Gregory's feelings for Abigail, Leo immediately instructed him to send an anonymous message asking her to catch her husband cheating at the hotel. At first, Leo didn't understand why Gregory would scheme against his nephew, but now it all made sense - Gregory liked Abigail. No wonder Gregory always stared at her with strange eyes. Leo realized that Gregory had been in love with Abigail for a while now.
