Chapter 3 Don't Have Inappropriate Thoughts
"Mary! What are you doing? Sit down!"
A colleague, clearly freaked out, yanked on Mary's sleeve and shot a nervous glance at Matthew.
He was the big boss, after all.
On his first day at DK Group, Mary had the guts to be so bold with Matthew. Was she nuts?
Luckily, Matthew didn't catch the scene. Surrounded by a bunch of senior execs, he headed straight into the president's private elevator.
The doors closed.
Mary watched as the face she adored, the one she knew so well, vanished behind the elevator doors without even a glance her way.
She snapped back to reality and let out a heavy sigh.
It was obvious now—he really didn't care about her.
A whole year of being together and loving him deeply, all for nothing!
Seeing her downcast look, the colleague seemed to think of something and leaned in to whisper, "Mary, do you know Mr. Montagu?"
"I've never seen you act so reckless. The way you looked just now, it seemed like Mr. Montagu had broken your heart," she added.
Mary forced a bitter smile.
Even people who had nothing to do with it could see how deeply he had hurt her.
Yet he could stay completely indifferent.
Matthew truly had a cruel heart!
Just then, a few sarcastic voices cut through.
"Usually acting all high and mighty, but as soon as she sees a rich guy, she wants to throw herself at him. And the funniest part? He doesn't even notice her."
"Mr. Montagu can easily see through a gold digger. He wouldn't go for a manipulative woman like her."
Looking up, it was those colleagues who usually didn't get along with Mary.
Amidst the mocking voices, a soft voice chimed in.
"Don't even think about it. If Mary can't get him, neither can you. Mr. Montagu already has a girlfriend."
With these words, everyone turned to the source of the voice.
It was Jeff, the biggest gossip in the DK Group.
He blew on his freshly painted nails and threw a flirtatious glance at everyone.
The atmosphere around them froze for a moment.
Jeff was the most well-informed person in the DK Group, always in the know about all kinds of gossip. Anything he said was usually spot on.
The next second, the office erupted in a chorus of sighs.
"Mr. Montagu has a girlfriend? She must be some rich heiress, right?"
"Of course, the story of a prince falling in love with a commoner only happens in fairy tales."
Hearing this, Mary clenched her fists secretly.
A faint hope rose in her heart.
Could it be that the news of her marriage to Matthew had been leaked?
Before Jeff could spill more, the supervisor, Kevin Martinez, walked over with a stern face.
"It's work time. Do you all not want to work anymore?"
Everyone immediately fell silent and returned to their desks.
Kevin then turned his gaze back and threw a stack of documents in front of Mary.
"Mr. Montagu wants you to go to his office and hand in this project report."
Mary picked up the project report and stood up. "Got it, Mr. Martinez."
Just as she was about to leave, Kevin suddenly called her, his tone full of warning.
"Do your job and don't get any ideas about Mr. Montagu."
Mary frowned slightly.
Kevin looked at her with disdain. "I don't know what kind of luck you have to be able to meet Mr. Montagu alone."
Mary pressed her lips together and didn't argue with him. She picked up the documents and entered the employee elevator.
As soon as she left, the office erupted into another round of discussion.
The previously sarcastic colleague mustered the courage to ask, "Mr. Martinez, Mr. Montagu wouldn't really be interested in someone as poor as her, would he? Besides her looks, what else does she have?"
Kevin had a cryptic smile on his face.
"There was a problem with the project, and Mr. Montagu is looking for someone to hold accountable."
With that, everyone exchanged glances and secretly smirked.
It seemed that Mary was in trouble.
