Chapter 5 A Debt of Gratitude Hard to Repay
The sound of a slap echoed through the big office, hanging in the air.
Laura, caught off guard, hit the floor with a scream.
"Mary! What the hell are you doing?"
Matthew yelled, shoving Mary aside and scooping Laura up. "Laura, are you okay? I'm taking you to the hospital right now!"
Mary stumbled from the push, smacking her lower back on the table's edge, tears of pain filling her eyes.
When she looked up, all she saw was Matthew's eyes, bloodyshot with anger.
"If anything happens to Laura, you're gonna regret it!"
With that, he stormed towards the door.
Seeing Matthew so harsh for another woman, Mary's eyes filled with sorrow.
But when she glanced at Laura, she froze.
Underneath that stylish, tight Bohemian dress, there was a prosthetic leg!
Hearing Mary's name, a dark glint flashed in Laura's eyes, but she quickly put on a sweet smile.
"Matthew, I'm fine. Put me down. I didn't know this is Mrs. Montagu."
Matthew sneered. "Soon she won't be."
Those words hit Mary like a punch to the gut.
Tears welled up as she bit her lip hard.
It was humiliating to hear the man she loved talk about divorce in front of another woman.
No one noticed the look of joy and satisfaction on Laura's face when Matthew mentioned divorce.
Matthew gently set Laura down, making sure she was steady before turning to Mary with a grim look.
"You've learned to hit people now? Apologize."
Mary glanced at Laura.
Even though she didn't want to, the sight of the prosthetic leg made her feel guilty. "I'm sorry, I didn't know you..."
"Enough!"
Matthew cut her off with a frown.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, instinctively feeling irritated at seeing Mary bow and scrape to others.
Besides, she didn't know about Laura's situation.
Laura, however, sensed Matthew's protectiveness towards Mary.
She frowned slightly and pretended to be gracious. "Ms. Smith, you don't need to feel guilty. I lost this leg two years ago saving Matthew. It's fine now."
Mary instinctively looked at Matthew.
As a woman, how could she not understand the underlying meaning in Laura's words?
Matthew and Laura's connection ran much deeper than hers.
If it weren't for that amnesia, how would she have had the chance to come between them?
Her heart ached with a constant, prickling pain.
She had given a whole year of genuine affection, but Laura had lost a leg for him!
Mary forced a smile. Her once bright eyes dimmed rapidly.
"Mr. Montagu, if there's nothing else, I'll leave now."
She turned to go.
Matthew frowned. "Wait."
Mary mechanically turned her head. Matthew whispered something to Laura, who glanced at Mary, pouted, and finally nodded.
"Alright, Matthew, you go ahead."
She added, "I'll wait for you tonight."
With that, she happily walked out of the CEO's office.
No one saw the instant coldness on Laura's face after she left the office.
In the CEO's office.
Mary and Matthew stood facing each other.
"Mr. Montagu, is there anything else?"
Matthew irritably tugged at his tie. "Mary, Laura and I..."
Mary raised her hand, her face pale.
"I understand, Mr. Montagu. Debts of gratitude must be repaid. I agree to the divorce."
