Chapter 7 Do you think I'm lacking women?
A cough shattered the silence, and Mary woke up to the smell of smoke.
As she sat up from the sofa, the clothes barely covering her body slipped off.
She gasped and quickly grabbed them, hastily putting them back on.
"Awake?"
Matthew's voice was cold and emotionless.
Mary looked towards the voice and saw Matthew sitting behind the desk, smoking.
Unlike her disheveled state, he was perfectly dressed, his hair still neat.
Mary's fingers tightened as she hurriedly buttoned up.
Remembering the earlier madness, she muttered, "Heartless."
To leave her in such a state after sex, without even bothering to help her tidy up.
She thought she might have imagined it, but it seemed like Matthew chuckled softly through the smoke.
The smile was so fleeting she almost missed it.
She walked over to Matthew with sore legs and sat directly on his lap.
Holding onto a last bit of hope, she cautiously asked, "Matt, we won't get divorced, right?"
Matthew instinctively held her waist to keep her from falling.
But then he cruelly blew a smoke ring in her face.
"Do you think I lack women?"
Mary's face changed dramatically, and she trembled as she stood up from his lap, seemingly unable to believe that such words had come from Matthew in front of her.
Matthew no longer looked at her and glanced at his watch. "It's 2 o'clock."
Time to get back to work.
Mary was trembling with anger, biting her lip hard. Finally, under Matthew's cold gaze, she turned and left.
Matthew watched her slender back, leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes wearily, and pinched the bridge of his nose.
After a while, he picked up his phone and tapped the screen a few times.
Soon, Kevin received the message.
When Mary returned to the office, everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at her with gloating expressions.
On Matthew's first day in office, Mary had the audacity to openly stand up and draw his attention.
Now, being questioned about her work, she came back looking so upset. It was clear Matthew had scolded her harshly.
People started whispering again, mostly speculating whether she would be fired.
Mary pretended not to hear and went straight back to her desk.
She was utterly exhausted from making love with Matthew.
A close colleague leaned over with concern, "Mary, are you okay? Did Mr. Montagu scold you? Will he fire you?"
Mary was stunned for a moment, recalling Matthew's expression earlier, and uncertainly said, "I don't think so."
She hadn't made any mistakes at work.
It would be over the line if Matthew fired her because of the divorce.
The colleague sighed in relief and said angrily, "They were all betting that you'd get fired for angering Mr. Montagu. I really wanted to argue with them!"
Mary looked at her, touched.
The colleague paused and then advised earnestly, "Mary, Mr. Montagu is out of reach for people like us. Don't do this again, or you'll be targeted by everyone."
Mary chuckled, a faint dimple appearing at the corner of her mouth.
"Got it, I wasn't trying to seduce him."
Besides, he was the one who forced her earlier.
The colleague didn't doubt her and went back to work, relieved.
After all, Mary was the most beautiful person she had ever seen, and she didn't want the company to lose such a pleasant colleague.
The afternoon passed quickly.
As the end of the workday approached, Kevin walked into the large office.
Sharp-eyed colleagues started whispering.
"Mr. Martinez is holding a file; it must be a termination letter! I knew Mary would be fired!"
Amid the murmurs, Kevin walked over to Mary and threw the file on her desk.
"Mary, Mr. Montagu personally instructed that you follow up on this project."
