Chapter 6 A Self-Righteous Woman

Upon Luna’s explanation, Charles replied, “Because you're an intern cop! Your information hasn’t passed the official review yet. And when I booked the VIP service, I only filled in my name. I checked, and the marriage is legally valid.”

"I see." Luna acknowledged, though feeling something was amiss. “How do you know I’m an intern cop? Where did you get your information? If you obtained it improperly, I can arrest you!”

Luna’s serious tone made Charles laugh in exasperation. His voice dripped with mockery, “Aren’t you from STF?”

Luna sensed the mockery and retorted, “So what if I’m an intern?”

Luna thought to herself, ‘I’m also an outstanding graduate! I joined the STF to take care of my brother.’

"I'm not interested in your useless talk! Let's meet and clear things up!" Charles demanded, wanting to meet Luna alone to sign a supplementary contract, while masking his true identity.

Luna sensed the hostility in his tone. If it were a less significant matter, she would have hung up. Yet, this situation warranted a face-to-face meeting to set things straight.

“Alright, let’s meet at the Subway across from my precinct at 9 PM. I’ve got other tasks now, so I’ll hang up.”

Luna ended the call abruptly, leaving Charles scoffing disdainfully.

‘An arrogant woman! No manners at all!’ he thought, convinced Luna hung up on purpose to assert control. Little did he know, Luna cut the call as Paul Scott reappeared, demanding her attention.

"Mr. Scott, I remember that document is with you. May I take a look?" Luna asked Paul politely.

Paul, in his fifties with a weathered face and hawk-like eyes, had a formidable reputation in his youth, but now was largely disliked for unknown reasons.

"Mr. Scott, just let me know if it's with you. I'll find it myself and won't bother you further."

Luna understood Paul's temper and was prepared for his backlash. To her surprise, after a tense silence, he replied, “The fifth one on the left, on the third shelf of the green filing cabinet.”

Without another word, he returned to his seat. Luna exhaled deeply, retrieved the file, and immersed herself in reading it.

Around eight o'clock, Joah and his team returned, having discovered the suspect’s hideout and captured several associates, bringing back several detainees. Joah, bearing a fresh wound on his face, ignored his need for medical attention, instead giving Luna a thumbs up.

"Luna, quick on the uptake! You earned a merit today!"

"Joah, actually I..." Luna started, but Joah had already turned away, immersed in his duties.

She decided to wait until Joah and the team finished their overnight interrogations.

Busy until past ten o’clock, Luna was only reminded of her appointment with Charles when Joah asked her to fetch some late-night snacks from the restaurant across the street.

‘Charles must have left by now!’ she thought, anxious about the missed meeting.
