Chapter 6
In the elite enclave of Aurora City, the Garden Estate stood as a testament to opulence and exclusivity. Constructed by the Kane Corporation, it was renowned for its luxury and security, with numerous checks ensuring only the elite could enter. However, Grandma Helen found these stringent measures irksome, especially since she frequently visited her grandson's estate.
After navigating the final security checkpoint, Grandma Helen sighed in relief. "Why must I endure this every time? My own grandson hasn't informed his security detail that I should be exempt from this rigmarole."
"Relax, Grandma," her companion replied. "You can discuss it with him later."
Helen admired the estate's picturesque scenery. "The only redeeming feature of this place is its beautiful view." Upon arriving at the mansion, bodyguards quickly opened the car door, bowing respectfully.
A maid, Clara, hurried out to greet her. "Welcome, Grandma."
Helen glanced around, noting the absence of any young women. "Where is the woman my grandson married?"
"She isn’t back yet but mentioned she would return by 3 p.m."
Helen nodded, deciding to wait for the mysterious woman her grandson had wed for a year and six months. As 3 p.m. approached, Lily Evans returned home. Spotting a car outside, she wondered if Alexander was back.
Entering the mansion, she encountered Clara. "You’re finally back, Miss Evans."
"Yes."
"I’ll take your things to your room. Mrs. Kane is in the living room waiting for you."
"Mrs. Kane?" Lily was taken aback.
"Yes, Mr. Kane's grandmother is here to see you."
"Oh," Lily replied, now understanding. "I’ll see her right away."
Entering the living room, Lily saw an elegant older woman whose noble aura was evident. Helen turned to see Lily, who, despite her simple attire, exuded grace and genuine warmth.
"Hello, Grandma. It's nice to meet you," Lily greeted with a sincere smile.
Helen nodded, "Have a seat, dear." She observed Lily's poised demeanor and was impressed. "I assume you are the one my grandson married."
"Yes, Grandma," Lily confirmed.
Helen chuckled, "I already like you. My grandson made a good choice."
Lily smiled, avoiding direct eye contact out of respect. Helen, intrigued by Lily's demeanor, asked, "What's your name, dear?"
"Lily Evans."
"Lily Evans," Helen repeated. "Nice name."
"Thank you, Grandma."
Helen nodded. "Tell me about yourself, Lily. What do you love to do?" Helen was eager to learn more.
Before Lily could respond, a familiar, cold voice interrupted, "There's no need for that since the marriage will last only a year and six months." Alexander’s abrupt statement stunned Lily, but she masked her hurt.
Helen frowned at her grandson's coldness but smiled warmly at Lily. "What would you like to eat, Grandma? I’ll prepare it for you," Lily offered, standing up.
Alexander frowned.
"Such a considerate child, but there's no need. I have engagements with friends," Helen said, preparing to leave.
"Okay, Grandma, let me see you off," Lily offered.
Alexander stepped in front of her, blocking her path. Their eyes met briefly before Lily looked away.
"Clara will see you off," he said firmly.
Helen left with a smile, pleased with her visit.
Meanwhile, Alexander handed Lily a new contract. "Sign both copies and give one to Clara." He walked away without waiting for her response.
Lily exhaled deeply, feeling his hostility. She went to her room, carefully read the contract, signed both copies, and handed one to Clara. In the kitchen, she overheard staff gossiping about Alexander’s unusual early return.
Seeing their fear, Lily reassured them, "Continue your work. I won't say a word."
"Is there anything you need, Miss Evans?" Clara asked.
Lily shook her head. "I’ll hand this to Mr. Kane myself."
"Thank you, miss," Clara replied, noting the document.
"Do you know where I can find Mr. Kane?"
"He should be in his study."
Following Clara's directions, Lily found the study. She knocked but received no response. She was about to knock again when Alexander's cold voice startled her from behind. "What are you doing here?" he demanded, walking towards her.
