Chapter 6 Clara's Call

Leaving City Hall, Elizabeth bid farewell to Alexander. She said politely, "Mr. Windsor, the doctor doesn't allow visits in the afternoon, so I won't be going back with you. I'll visit Aunt Esme tomorrow morning."

She was always considerate.

When they were not in front of Esme, she would consciously keep her distance from Alexander.

"Suit yourself," Alexander replied coldly.

Elizabeth walked away alone.

In the car, Gavin asked Alexander, "Mr. Windsor, aren't you afraid she'll run away?"

Alexander sneered contemptuously, "Run away? If she really wanted to escape, why would she work as a waitress at a restaurant I frequent went? And why would she come to my mother to borrow money? The previous two escapes were just her way of raising her own value."

Gavin replied, "That's true."

"Drive," Alexander ordered.

The car sped past Elizabeth without Alexander even glancing back at her.

Elizabeth dragged her tired body back to her place.

Just as she reached her doorstep, someone blocked her way. The impatient voice said, "Elizabeth! So you really are hiding around here."

It was Clara!

Two years ago, Clara, due to her chaotic personal life, was assaulted by an old and ugly pervert. While the man was off guard, Clara smashed his head with a high-heeled shoe, killing him instantly.

To exonerate Clara, the Guise family got Elizabeth drunk and secretly placed her at the meticulously staged crime scene.

As a result, Elizabeth was sentenced to ten years for manslaughter.

Clara, on the other hand, avoided being sent to prison.

Thinking of this, Elizabeth felt a surge of anger, wanting to strangle Clara.

She looked at Clara coldly, and asked, "How did you find me?"

Clara, even more smug, said, "Elizabeth, do you know what this place is called? It's Urban Village, the only Urban Village in the entire Sunwillow City. Majority of the residents here are prostitutes. You can get one for five dollars, and if you work all night, you can make a hundred dollars. Quite a sum, isn't it?"

"So, are you here to brag about making a hundred dollars in one night?" Elizabeth retorted coldly.

"You!" Clara said abruptly as she raised her hand to hit Elizabeth but stopped halfway.

She smiled sweetly. Then said, "I was almost got mad at you. Just let me finish what I have to say to you, I'm getting married soon. While cleaning up for the renovation, the servants found some photos of you and your mother."

Elizabeth asked urgently, "Photos of my mother? Don't throw them away, I'll come to get them!"

Her mother had passed away, and the remaining photos were undoubtedly precious.

Clara asked indifferently, "When will you come?"

Elizabeth responded, "Tomorrow afternoon."

"Tomorrow afternoon it is! Otherwise, the longer that trash stays in my house, the more it pollutes!" Clara said rudely, strutting away in her high heels.

Not long after Clara left, Elizabeth fell asleep.

She was in the early stages of pregnancy and had been running around all day, feeling quite exhausted. She wanted to rest early so that she could go to the hospital for a prenatal checkup the next day.

The next day, Elizabeth arrived early at the ultrasound room in the hospital to wait in line. Just one person ahead of her, she received a call from Alexander. Elizabeth answered, "Mr. Windsor, what's the matter?"

On the other end, Alexander's voice was as cold as ever. He said, "My mom misses you."

Elizabeth looked at the queue ahead of her and calculated the time, then replied, "I can be at the hospital in an hour and a half."

"Okay," Alexander replied curtly.

Elizabeth cleared her throat. She requested nicely, "I'll do my best to make Aunt Esme happy. Can you give me some spending money? You can deduct it from the divorce settlement."

"We'll talk when you get here," Alexander said, hanging up abruptly.

He hated negotiating with anyone!

Elizabeth continued to wait in line.

Just as it was her turn, an emergency patient was brought in for an ultrasound, delaying her for over half an hour more. When it was finally her turn again, she learned that the first prenatal checkup required creating an information file.

Another half-hour delay passed by.

When Elizabeth arrived at Esme's room, she heard Esme crying, "You ungrateful son, are you lying to me? Where is Elizabeth?"

"Mom, we got married yesterday," Alexander explained as he handed the marriage certificate to Esme.

"I want you to find Elizabeth right now!" Esme pushed Alexander persistently.

"I'll find her immediately," Alexander said, stepping out.

At the door, Elizabeth met Alexander's cold gaze.

She lowered her head and walked to Esme's bedside, speaking gently, "Aunt Esme, I'm sorry I'm late. I remember you always said you loved Oatmeal Cookies, so I bought you a box."

Esme smiled through her tears. She remarked, "Elizabeth, do you still remember I love Oatmeal Cookies?"

"Of course," Elizabeth replied as she handed Esme an Oatmeal Cookie. "Here, have one."

Esme looked at Elizabeth longingly. She urged, "Elizabeth, you should start calling me Mom."

Elizabeth replied, "Mom."

Esme, comforted, said, "With you by Alexander's side, I can rest easy even if I go to heaven."

Elizabeth's eyes suddenly reddened as she tried to stop herself from crying. She replied, "Mom, don't say that. You'll live a long life."

After comforting Esme to sleep, Elizabeth approached Alexander, biting her lip. she asked, "Mr. Windsor, can I have some spending money now?"

Alexander's expression remained unchanged as he said calmly, "You promised to be here in an hour and a half, but it took you three hours. If you play hard to get and disappoint my mother again, it won't just be about money."

Elizabeth shivered, sensing the calm yet deadly threat in his voice.

She knew he wasn't just saying it.

She smiled bitterly. "It's not easy to earn money from the rich. I understand! I won't ask you again. I just want to confirm, you'll help me get my state residency, right?" Elizabeth rebutted.

Alexander replied, "The terms in the contract will be fulfilled."

"Thank you. I have something to do this afternoon, so I'll leave now," Elizabeth said, leaving dejectedly.

"Alexander," Esme called from the room.

Alexander immediately went in. "What's wrong, Mom?"

Esme spoke earnestly, "I know you dislike Elizabeth. But Alexander, the many hardships I endured in prison were endured by Elizabeth. I understand her loyalty better than anyone. Haven't we been schemed against enough in the Windsor family? I'm afraid that in the future... I want to find you a wife who will never abandon you. Do you understand my intentions?"

"I understand, Mom," Alexander replied and nodded.

Esme tried to get out of bed. She remarked, "I want to call Zoey personally to ask if Elizabeth is staying at home. Only when you become a real couple will I be at ease."

Alexander remained silent.

At that moment, his phone rang. He answered, his tone icy, "What is it?"

On the other end, Clara's deliberately sweet voice said, "Alexander, I want to invite you to my house this afternoon to discuss our wedding. Is that okay?"

"I'm busy today!" Alexander rejected her decisively.
