Chapter 1
Nirka stood on the terrace of her chambers, in her family’s castle. The fire in the hearth had long since died down to glowing embers. Nirka pulled her long black lace robe a little closer to her thin frame. Her Fire red hair was pulled up into a ponytail. Her skin was a pale white no matter how much sun she got. The night seemed ever blacker tonight, there were no stars to been seen everything was covered with a black cloud of what seemed like death. The market that she could see from her terries was very quiet, what was usually busy at every hour on the weekends was closed. Nirka put her fingers to her temples to try and block out the voices. From a young age Nirka like her mother before her, could hear everyone talking and all their thoughts. Mother had taught her how to block them but tonight was difficult. Father was holding a town meeting in the royal council hall to talk About how the humans were destroying their world and all the people in it. If humans became extinct then her world would also fall, they depend on the human for so many things. Mother her father called to her with his mind, when her birth mother was murdered 30 years ago Nirka had to step into her mother’s role. She had been trained from a young child that this was her destiny. Most of the time she ruled, and her Father watched from the side advising where needed. But this utter self destruction the human had brought upon them selves made him step in. Father had gathered all the residents to of the realm to make unanimous decision whether they would interfere with what was happening in the human realm or not. Her Father called her again but used her given name Nirka, I need you to come down here. Please he groaned. But father Nirka said back in their mind link I don’t want to be involved in this. You already know my opinion. His voice softened yes, I know child, but everyone needs to hear from you, what you think should be done. You are my daughter and the realms mother we need to put this subject to bed once and for all. Nirka could not deny her father. He was right her word was law and no one would go against her decision. Let me dress father and I will be down. With relief in his voice, he said thank you Mother. Their connection was then closed. Nirka went to her wardrobe it was time like these she hated the most she had to dress in her royal clothes. She hated dresses But it represented her position to everyone. She sighed and began to pull out her royal clothes. Nirka entered the great hall, everyone fell to one knee the there was complete silence. She was dressed in a gold silk gown that lightly swept the floor as she walked. Her hair was now up in a bun with a gold and diamond tiara on her head, she wore red sapphire earrings that matched the diamond and sapphire necklace and ring she had on. As she walked to where her father was everyone that was in her way moved silently to let her pass. No on spoke until she reached her Father. Then still on one knee everyone spoke together “good evening, Mother”. After 30 years Nirka was still not use to this, how did her mother do it for over 60 years. Nirka took her left hand and raised it telling everyone to stand. Suddenly everyone started talking at once expressing their opinions on the human circumstances. Using her mind and casting to the crowd off people she yelled enough. Everyone again became silent, but she hears the voices of some opinions in their minds, Nirka swiftly stared at the individuals who then fell silent. With a stern voice she began to speak. I have had enough of your bickering wining and carrying on. You have all been hurting my head. I now see that I must make a ruling as no one around here can agree upon anything. Those who oppose my decision can go live with the Italians see how far you get with them. Her Brother Trevor opened his mouth to speak but then thought twice and closed it. Standing beside Father he was a tall man of 6’2” with the same red hair, he wore dark pants and his royal shirt that was stitched with gold thread and ruby’s. He was in great shape for a man his age. He was 2 years older than Nirka and resented her becoming Mother, he hated the old ways that they should be abolished and that he should sit on the throne. But he never considered that he did not have the same abilities as Nirka, she had been trained from a small child that this was to be her role that one day she would take over for her mom and become Mother. He looked at her and sneered Nirka looked away let father deal with him she thought. I call for the royal scribes to come forward and take down these words that will become law she beckoned. She began to pace as she spoke, if we let humans become extinct then it will have dire consequences on us. I have already seen it. How many of you have lost your black smith, your dress maker, do I need to go on? our food source yelled someone from somewhere in the crowd, Nirka turned almost as red as her hair she opened he mind link and searched everyone’s mind in the room. Aloud she said with almost a growl “who spoke those words “everyone remained silent, but Nirka still pushed through the crowd with her mind. I shall wait all night if I have to, she bellowed aloud. As soon as she finished speaking the ones that had gathered parted, and someone pushed a young man to stand in front of Nirka. Nirka stood in front of him and taking her index finger raised his chin up to meet her eyes. That is not our way she hissed at him has never been our way do you, young man partake in using humans as food.
