Chapter Five

"So..." Evan said putting his hands in his pockets. "What shall we do while they are gone?"

She walked past him into the living room and sat down on the sofa not answering at first. She looked to him and replied, "I guess we can watch T.V." She felt nervous and out of place. She had never been alone with a boy before and one that was good looking. She watched him sit on the sofa next to her at the other end.

"Alright, what would you like to watch?" he asked as he picked up the remote and started flipping through the channels.

"Um...I don't really care; whatever you want to watch I guess." She folded her hands in her lap and sat stiffly. She tried to relax but she couldn't. Maybe I should have went with Sel after all she thought to herself.

He put on a show that showed things that became quite idiotic. As she watched she thought it was the stupidest show she had ever seen. The people did off the wall kind of things that were either gross or just plain stupid. Whoever actually watched this crap? To her it wasn't even funny, but Evan started laughing at the things that the people did to each other.

"Man, I love this show." He said, and she just simply smiled at him.

Her view of him sunk just a little lower. Finally, the show was over, and he started flipping through the channels again.

"So, how do you know Selena and her brother?" She started the conversation. She didn't know why but she was hoping to get a little information on Selena's older brother Jared.

"Well, I met Jared first, we've known each other since the third grade, and he invited me over one day after school and that was when I met the rest of his family. You know, me and Jared are best friends. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for him." He said.

She waited for him to go on, but he looked like he wasn't going to say anything else.

"How did you meet Selena?" He asked her.

She was ready for the question, considering she had just asked him the same one. "Well, I actually knew Sel from elementary, we were really good friends then, but my dad moved us back in the east when he got a bigger job offer. When he finally became his own boss and was making enough profit, he again moved us back here, that was two years ago." Right after Jared supposedly went to boot camp, she thought to herself.

"So, you and Selena just picked up from there then?" he asked completely interested in what she was saying.

She looked at him and thought how cute he looked and how his hazel eyes shined brightly with interest at her story. "I was put in the same school and classroom as Selena's, even though I didn't know that I would be. I was completely surprised as she was and now, here we are." She shrugged her shoulders as she said that last bit.

"Huh." He sat back and was looking at the T.V. even though he didn't seem to be watching it. She was trying to watch the program, but she was too aware of his presence to stay focused. An hour went by without either of them talking but just watching show after show. Then Evan got up and turned to her.

"I'm going to grab something from the kitchen, do you want anything?"

She looked up at him and said, "Sure, just get me whatever there is to drink I guess."

He smiled at her and walked into the kitchen. The phone started ringing just at that moment. She heard Evan kind of skipping to get to it and heard, "This is the Copper's residence, Evan speaking."

Suddenly he popped his head out of the kitchen to look at her with a frown. "Why can't you just tell me, and I'll tell her?" he rolled his eyes and then leaned against the door frame. "No, I don't think I will, how about you just tell me, and I'll relay the message."

She frowned at him. It was obvious whoever was on the phone wanted to speak to someone other than Evan. She got up and walked over to where he was standing. He looked surprised. "Wow someone's in a rotten mood, was it more serious than we thought?" he asked smiling.

Her eyes widen. "Selena?"

He held up his hand to hold her off while he was still listening. "Yeah, she's right next to me." He rolled his eyes again. "No dumbass, I didn't do a single thing. She is as untouched just as you left her." He listened a bit more. "Fine, here!" He held the phone out to her, and she grabbed it causing contact with his hand. Her heart did a little flip at the simple touch.

"Hello?"

"Hey." The voice was not what she was expecting at all.

"Oh, hello." She said again.

"Did you expect someone else?" Jared asked on the other line.

"Well, actually from the way the conversation was going with Evan I was thinking it was your sister."

"Oh." He said.

She waited for him to say something else, but he didn't. She broke the awkward silence after a few moments. "So...how is Selena doing?"

"Oh, right Selena...I wanted to let you know that they had to put ten stitches in, and they said it's more than likely going to leave a scar, my parents are going to kill me when they find out." He stressed a little.

"It's not your fault that it happened."

Evan acted like he was doing something else. She knew he was listening in on her and Jared's conversation and she felt a little awkward knowing that every word she spoke was being judged by this guy.

"I know, but my mom and dad are going to blame me anyways. 'You should have been watching what she was doing blah blah blah'..." he said in an imitation she assumed was his father's voice. "You know all that bullshit."

She did know. Her mother and father were the same way when it came down to watching her little cousin Kristan. She smiled. "Is she in a lot of pain?"

"Well, she was at first, especially when they put the stitches in, they forgot to numb her hand and by then it was too late. I had no idea my little sister was so colorful with words. I could have sworn she grew horns there for a moment." He said almost sarcastically.

She laughed at that knowing that was a sarcastic joke that her best friend had been quiet the entire time. Poor Selena and knowing her she more than likely didn't say a single word about it. She wasn't one to complain when she was in any kind of pain. One time she had broken her arm falling off the monkey bars at school and fell in an awkward position. She didn't even cry out when she hit the ground. She got up, face in a mask of pain and just cradled her arm close to her not letting a single tear fall and just walked to the nurse's office. She had been only six years old then.

"We're just waiting for the discharge papers and then we will be heading back. Just thought I would call and let you guys know."

She looked at Evan who seemed to have lost interest of trying to hear what they were talking about and went back to watching T.V.

"Ok." She said.

"Alright well, I guess I'll see you later." He said slowly as if he didn't want to hang up just yet.

"Yep, I guess so...well bye."

"Bye." The line went dead leaving Mila to sigh and hung up the phone.

She went back into the living room and sat down.

"I got you some tea while you were on the phone." Evan pointed to a tall glass of iced tea sitting on the coffee table.

"Oh, thank you." She went and picked it up and while they were drinking their tea he was flipping through the channels.

"Do you like watching wizards and shit?"

She shrugged her shoulders making a face. "It's not something I'm really into."

"Mind if I watch? It's been a while since we were allowed to watch anything other than documentaries." He asked her.

"No, not at all."

They sat there quietly through more than half of the movie and it turned out a bit longer than normal considering it had commercials when Evan got up and sat down next to her on the couch. She sat up straighter and her heart quickened a bit at his sudden closeness.

"You know, I was wondering about something." He said to her.

She looked at him and caught her breath. He was staring right at her and was really, really close. He looked down at her lips and just stared at them. She had difficulty swallowing. She felt like she couldn't move a muscle if she tried, and she really didn't want to try. He slowly moved in closer to her as if he was going to kiss her. She closed her eyes but before anything could have happened, they heard a car pull up in the driveway. He snapped back and quickly got off the couch and ran to the window. She felt so embarrassed that her face felt hot.

"They're back." He said sounding disappointed.

She got up from the couch and walked over next to him. He looked at her, gave a wink making her flame up even more and she really hoped that she wasn't so noticeable.

"Well, let's go get questioned shall we." He said opening the front door and walking out.

She frowned at that statement not understanding what he had meant. But somehow, she had a feeling it was something Selena had mentioned before she had left to the hospital. She felt uncomfortable and a little irritated because Jared had no right to act like he needs to know everything that goes on. No right at all.
