Chapter 2 The Truth About Sophia Falling Down the Stairs

Emily's inner voice was buzzing: [Gotta check out Olivia's info. Why'd she push Sophia down the stairs? Isn't she scared Sophia will wake up and spill everything? Oh... wait, now I get it.]

James thought, 'Why can't you just spill it all at once? Now I'm dying to know.'

On the outside, James kept his cool, but his mind was racing.

Emily: [Poor Sophia. She thought Olivia was her best friend, but Olivia played her like a fool! Sophia, don't worry! Even though I divorced James, I'll make sure you get justice!]

James raised an eyebrow, thinking, 'So why did Olivia push Sophia? Where'd she get the nerve?'

Emily: [Olivia's sure Sophia won't rat her out right away. She thinks Sophia will come to her for answers. When that happens, Olivia plans to sweet-talk her like always, and Sophia will cover for her. After all, Olivia's her so-called savior.]

Emily: [Olivia's still smug. Four years ago, she set up some thugs to harass Sophia, then swooped in to save her. Sophia feels like she owes her big time.]

James's frown deepened. Was that incident four years ago a setup too?

After getting out of the car, James hung back, letting Olivia and Emily walk ahead.

To avoid jumping to conclusions, James dialed a number. "John, I need you to look into something for me."

John, who was at the hospital, got James's call and left the ward.

James's parents, Michael Smith and Ava Davis, were by Sophia's bedside and didn't notice John leaving.

John quickly contacted the right people to dig into the details of the harassment incident from four years ago.

Even though it was a while back, James remembered it clearly.

Back then, Olivia, who was just an intern, got hurt while "saving" Sophia from the thugs. Since then, Sophia got really close to Olivia, and Olivia became James's most trusted assistant, right after John.

After hanging up, James looked at Emily ahead and shook his head in disbelief.

Sophia was in a VIP ward at Harmony Hospital, a private hospital owned by the Smith Group. The sixth to ninth floors were all VIP wards for patients needing privacy.

Especially the sixth floor, reserved for the Smith Family. Normally, it was used for filming promotional videos, but otherwise, it was just for the Smiths.

Since Sophia was hurt, security on the whole floor was tight. The hospital even had an elevator that only stopped on the 6th to 9th floors.

In the elevator, James and Emily stood side by side, with Olivia and two bodyguards behind them.

Olivia's stare at Emily was intense. Just as Emily was about to shift, they arrived at the 6th floor.

Olivia's sinister look vanished as soon as she stepped out. She quickly put on her friendly facade.

As Emily walked out, she couldn't help but check on Sophia's condition remotely. When she had sent Sophia to the emergency vehicle, she had already scanned her with MindSweep.

Emily: [Sophia's fine; just a sprained ankle. She had a CT scan, and it showed only a soft tissue injury. Sophia's still thinking about Olivia pushing her. She shouldn't be too hard on herself; people can be awful. She wants to test Olivia? I'll see how I can help. I can't let her suffer!]

As they got closer to the ward, Michael, Ava, and Sophia also heard Emily's inner voice.

Michael and Ava looked around. Besides the two bodyguards outside, there was only Sophia in the ward.

At that moment, Ava paused while peeling an orange for Sophia. She shook her head, thinking she was just tired.

Sophia sat in a daze, replaying what happened on the stairs.

She really thought Olivia was her best friend. Since Olivia had saved her four years ago, Sophia thought they were tight.

In Sophia's mind, Olivia was her savior. In the four years they knew each other, Sophia treated Olivia like family.

She shared everything with Olivia, from crushes to complaints about mentors.

Olivia had been part of all her ups and downs.

How could Olivia have pushed her down the stairs?

Sophia couldn't believe Olivia was a bad person.
