Chapter 4 Anna's Suicide
"Where's she at now?" George's face went ghost-white, a wave of unease hitting him like a ton of bricks, making him tense up.
"She got taken to TeleHealth Hospital, and she's in really bad shape." Olivia's voice was all shaky, the tension jumping over to George, leaving his mind in a total mess.
"I'm heading over right now!" George hung up, shot up from his seat, anxiety written all over him.
The door slammed shut, leaving Emma standing alone in the empty room, filled with fear and helplessness. Her face went pale, and she stood there, stunned for a few seconds. She thought, 'Anna tried to off herself?'
Ignoring her own discomfort, she quickly washed up, threw on some clothes, and rushed downstairs.
By the time she got downstairs, George was already gone. She quickly called a cab and headed to the hospital.
At TeleHealth Hospital, Emma followed George to Anna's ward.
The light cast a thin warmth, and Anna lay on the bed, her face pale and her expression dazed.
When George rushed in, she weakly opened her eyes, a flicker of hope and pain in them.
"George..." Anna slightly extended her hand, despite her weakness, she still wanted to reach out to him.
George's heart ached as he pulled her into his arms, gently whispering words of comfort.
Anna nestled in his arms, tears streaming down her face, "I'm really scared, why is this happening, is fate really not allowing us to be together..." Her voice was filled with dependence and fragility, as if only he could give her a sense of security.
This scene deeply pierced Emma's heart. She stood quietly at the door, filled with indescribable bitterness.
The scene before Emma's eyes made it seem as if George and Anna were the loving couple, and she, Emma, was just an outsider. The warmth that once belonged to her was now occupied by Anna.
At that moment, the door to the ward was suddenly pushed open, and Olivia stormed in, her eyes full of anger, saying, "You shameless person! What are you doing here!"
Emma was startled by Olivia's words and hurriedly stepped back, feeling a wave of grievance and she said, "I just wanted to see how Anna is doing."
Olivia sneered, pointing at Emma, saying, "Emma, you ungrateful wretch! How dare you come to see Anna!"
"I didn't steal anyone!" Emma's heart burned with indignation, her voice trembling slightly, "Between George and me..."
Olivia sneered coldly, stepping forward with a face full of anger, "Get out! Leave here now!"
Olivia's hand mercilessly pushed Emma, catching her off guard and causing her to fall to the ground, looking utterly disheveled.
George finally noticed the commotion, but he only glanced over and then looked away.
Emma sat on the ground, feeling a sharp pain, her heart even more bitter, "Please don't treat me like this. I'm just worried about Anna."
"Why are you worried about Anna, you hypocritical woman?" Olivia's eyes burned with rage, "You don't deserve it! You shameless bitch! We, the Jones family, took you in out of kindness, gave you food, gave you clothes, and this is how you repay us? You schemed to steal Anna's fiancé!"
Olivia was referring to the incident three months ago when Emma inexplicably slept with George, but that was not Emma had planned.
Emma wanted to explain, but another slap landed on her face.
This slap made her mouth bleed immediately, her vision blurred. She instinctively protected her stomach, but before she could explain, Anna's father, Jerry Jones, slapped her hard on the head again.
"The one who deserves to die isn't Anna, it's you!"
Emma's mouth bled, her head buzzing with pain. She looked up painfully, seeing Anna leaning against George's chest, tears in her eyes.
If it weren't for that incident, George's wife would be Anna now, not her, the adopted daughter living under someone else's roof.
Even though the incident with George wasn't her doing, at this moment, she felt a deep sense of guilt.
