Chapter 2

Two months after Daisy's death, Caroline had dropped nearly twenty pounds. One day in class, she suddenly fainted, and her classmates rushed her to the hospital.

At the hospital, the doctor gave her a stern look. "You're two months pregnant. If you don't start taking better care of yourself, it's gonna be bad news for the baby."

Caroline's face went ghostly white.

Caroline's stepmom, Lydia Campbell, got wind of this and immediately called Roxanne. "Roxanne, you won't believe it; that brat Caroline is pregnant. Your dad's gonna flip and kick her out for sure!"

Roxanne, who was on set, went pale. "Mom, you have to make sure Caroline gets an abortion!"

Lydia was confused. "Why?"

Roxanne was sweating bullets. "Mom, don't ask why. My future depends on this. Just make sure she gets an abortion, okay?"

Though puzzled, Lydia took Roxanne's plea seriously and headed to the hospital with her husband, Nolan Rockefeller.

In the hospital, right in front of the doc, Nolan smacked Caroline a bunch of times. "You're just a freshman, and you're already knocked up?!"

The doc couldn't stand it. "Mr. Rockefeller, chill out. Caroline's already weak, and hitting her like that could mess her up bad."

Nolan snapped back, "Shut up! Just get rid of the baby."

The doc looked stressed. "Mr. Rockefeller, Caroline has trouble getting pregnant. If she aborts this baby, she might never have another chance."

On the hospital bed, a flicker of hope lit up in Caroline's dazed eyes. She instinctively looked at Nolan.

"But we can't keep this baby! Caroline has to get an abortion, even if it kills her," Nolan raged, his eyes bloodshot, panting like a madman.

The light in Caroline's eyes faded, turning into emptiness. She realized she shouldn't expect anything from him.

Nolan had an affair with his secretary Lydia, schemed against Daisy, and even brought Lydia home, leaving Daisy to die.

As long as Caroline was around, she reminded Nolan every day of how he got rich off Daisy's back and repaid her kindness with betrayal, driving Daisy and Caroline out.

Tears welled up, but Caroline lowered her head and said, "Dad, I'll do what you say. I'll get rid of the baby."

Lydia, watching from the side, pretended to step forward. "Caroline knows she messed up. Nolan, don't be mad."

She reached out with a concerned look and touched Caroline's swollen face. "Nolan, how could you hit her so hard? Caroline, don't be scared. Daisy's gone, but I'm here. Listen to me, get the abortion, and we'll act like this never happened. I'll love you like my own daughter."
