Chapter 4: Berton

Emily's POV

"I need to quit," I said to myself. "I can't keep putting myself in danger." Those randy superior wolves would keep coming, and one day, luck might not smile upon me like it did today. The idea of quitting had started as a stray thought, but now I was saying it to myself until I started to sound like a mantra.

I thought about what I would do if I quit my job. I'd applied for a vacancy at the Packhouse a few weeks back after nearly being assaulted but I think it fell through because I didn't get a call. Tonight was the last straw, and I wasn't going back. The next morning, I got dressed and headed to the bar. My boss was standing behind the counter, counting money, when I walked in.

"Good morning." I greeted.

"Morning, Emily," he said without looking up.

"I need to talk to you please." I said with a shaky voice, still worried about the way he would react when I would spill the news. He glanced up, raising an eyebrow.

"Can it wait?" He asked.

I shook my head. "I'm quitting. I can't work here anymore." His brows folded instantly as he surveyed my face carefully.

"Why? What happened? Oh, let me guess. Because of last night?" He asked. I took a deep breath, explaining myself.

"Last night was too much. I was almost forced into something terrible. I don't think I can take that risk again." He sighed, shaking his head.

"Fine." He slammed his hand on the counter. "But in case you're looking for a quick paycheck, I'd be glad to let you know that you're not getting paid for this month."

I stared at him in shock, before glancing around. We'd already attracted a pair of curious eyes. I didn't want to cause another Scene but this was simply unacceptable.

"What? You can't do that! I need that money!"

"You're quitting without notice and stop looking around like your knight in shining armor will come to save you. Maybe you should go through your contract paperwork again!" He fired back. Knowing that shouting at each other wouldn't help matters, I decided to beg.

"Please, I...I need that money to survive. Just this month's pay. I...it could be half or-"

"No, get it into your head. No pay! Now get out of here before I call the guards!" He threatened.

The tears stung my eyes as I turned and walked out of the bar. I felt hopeless, and it took everything in me to get back home before I began to shed the tears. I had no idea that things would get better from there onwards because I got a call that evening from a recruitment agency.

"Hello, is this Emily?" The cheerful voice chirped.

"Yes... This is Emily," I replied, confused about who might be calling. There was no profile in the caller ID, just a bunch of strange numbers that I couldn't make anything of.

"We received your application a few weeks ago and we have an opening for a cleaner at Terra. Are you interested in an interview?" The feminine voice asked. My heart skipped a beat as every ounce of darkness vanished, and was slowly replaced by warmth and joy.

"Y-yes. I'm very interested. Thank you!"

"Great! The interview is tomorrow at 10AM. Good luck!" I was about to say another thank you when she hung up. I slapped my mouth shut to avoid screaming, but it was futile.

An ecstatic shout tore out of my throat. I couldn't believe it! I spent the rest of the day preparing for the interview, writing down lines and rehearsing them. This was a big opportunity and I didn't want to f*ck this up. I had to make the best impression, no matter what.

The next morning I arrived at the gargantuan company's building, feeling nervous but ready.

Just for good measure, I'd brought a pair of tight-fitting top and skirt in case I was to start today. Odd, but I'd better be safe than sorry. Terra was the biggest company in the Pack, it housed an empire of several big businesses and it was owned by the Royal family.

Taking a deep breath, I walked inside the lobby which was busy with a fairly large number of people, all looking very professional. I found a seat and made for it but someone nearby tripped and spilled their coffee all over me. I winced when I felt the scalding hot liquid deep seep into my dress.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" The woman exclaimed, looking horrified.

I got up after the hot liquid had doused before angrily making my way towards one of the guards, not listening to the woman who kept apologizing again and again. I silently thanked myself for bringing the shirt along, otherwise it would have been a different story. The guard pointed down the hall after I'd asked for directions to the restroom. I thanked him and hurried off.

Berton's POV

"Alpha, the current operational status is stable, but we have a few concerns." Mark, my assistant, said as he hurried to keep up with me while juggling through papers and a tablet.

"Go on, Mark." I said, glancing at my watch. "I have about ten minutes before my next meeting."

"Right," he said before I heard several pages flip. "The finance department flagged some discrepancies in last month's reports. They suspect some invoices are missing. And the new project in sector B is behind schedule due to material shortages."

"Make sure the finance team does a thorough audit. And for the project delays, get in touch with our suppliers. We can't afford any more setbacks."

"Of course, Alpha. And there's one more thing."

"Can it wait."

"Afraid not."

I clenched my fist and said through gritted teeth. I still had nine minutes or so, but I need some time to go over some paperwork before the meeting.

"Go on." "The maintenance team reported some problems with the air conditioning system on the lower floors. It needs immediate attention."

"Have the repair company fix it today. We can't have our employees working in discomfort. Make sure the cleaner does extra hours to give reports about small issues like this every week." I said.

Taking a deep breath, I began walking towards my office. But I felt a sudden, unsettling sensation. My wolf stirred inside me and began again.

"Not now, please!" I growled, already envisioning myself sweating in my tuxedo while the meeting was going on. But my thoughts were broken off when I smelled something.

"Is everything okay, Alpha?" Mark asked.

"I need a moment." I said, waving him off immediately.

"Continue with the tasks and get my papers ready. I'll join you shortly."

Without waiting for a response, I turned and hurried towards the smell. It was getting stronger and the sensation it gave me was overwhelming, like being fanned by the breeze after a tedious morning run in the woods.

I soon got to the restroom and immediately spotted the locked door. I had lost every single command over my wolf and had no idea if it would be creepy to open a door in the female restroom.

I pushed the door open, but it was locked. But my wolf took over instantly, forcing me to push it with such a great forge that shattered the bolt. As soon as I entered, a familiar scent hit me.

Her well-formed body had an effect on me, one that I couldn't describe. Every line and curve was mesmerizing. Her breasts were perfect, full and round with smooth skin. I felt a shiver run through me at the thought of kneading them. Her thin waist curved gracefully gracefully broad hips, leading to a perfectly shaped ass that was firm and well-defined.

Suddenly, I came to my senses.
