Chapter 2 Interrogation

NINA'S POV

A keening wail erupted from my throat as the tears flowed, my body shaking with the force of my sobs. I dropped to my knees, the pain in my heart too much to bear.

My vision swam, blurring the world around me as I slumped against the wall. How could he do this? How could he betray me like this? Every memory of our love, every sweet word he'd whispered, every tender touch he'd given me now felt like a cruel joke, a lie, a mockery of my naïve trust.

I was broken and confused.

The phone slipped from my trembling fingers and clattered to the floor, the voices of my betrayers becoming distant and hollow. I crumpled to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably, as my mind replayed the sweet nothings Leo had whispered in my ear and the laughter of my sister as we'd shared secrets and dreams.

The contrast between those memories and the harsh reality of their deceit was too much to bear. My chest heaved with each ragged breath, my sobs wracking my body as I curled into a tight ball of anguish and despair.

"What is the matter, Nina?"Nora's concerned voice rang out but I didn't give her a reply. I was lost in a world of pain and anguish, I could not believe it!

That wasn't my Leo on the phone! "No! No!"I yelled out with pain and fear, I was slowly running crazy!

I fought so hard to deny that it was Leo but as much as I tried, I knew I couldn't deceive myself, It was truly my man, Leo.

"Nina, please talk to me,"Nina pleaded again.

Slowly, I lifted my eyes to meet her soft gaze on me.

"Please…"she muttered tenderly.

As those words left my lips, tears subconsciously fell down my cheeks, my lips trembling with pain.

"I..I…"I tried saying something but no words came out. Rather, my voice was hoarse with pain.

"Hey…hey…"Nora muttered as she hugged me. "Take a deep breath, it is all going to be alright, trust me"

Her hug and soft words seemed to do the trick because I found myself calming down. I took a deep breath and steadied my emotions a little.

"Nora…"I called as I broke from the hug. I closed my eyes, trying to muster the courage to utter such abominable words from my mouth. "It's…it's…Leo"I finally said and almost immediately, she flared up with shock.

"Leo?!"She asked, half yelling. "Did…did anything happen to him?!"

"No"I shook my head. "He…he cheated on me with my step sister!"I yelled out with pain and anger, I could hardly believe it, Leo was fucking cheating on me!

"What?"She yelled, unable to believe it. "How do you know about this, though?"

"The…the phone call.."I muttered. "I heard him making out with my sister!"

"Hey…calm down now, little banshee"Nora said as she patted me. "It's going to be okay, dear. It might not be what you think, Why don't you just go to his company and confront him?"

I nodded, that was a good idea.

"Al.. alright then"I sniffled as I got up, dried my tears and began walking towards my room. I prayed within myself that it was all a scary nightmare that I was going to wake up from very soon, but deep down, I couldn't help but feel as though my worst nightmare was my reality.

I headed straight to my room and changed into a simple, white flared gown, grabbed my purse and the bracelet I had made for Leo and began walking towards the door.

"I would be back"I told Nora who gave me an encouraging smile.

As I boarded a cab to his company, I was lost in thoughts. I literally held onto the last strings of my sanity and did not burst into hot tears as memories of the awful thing I heard in the phone call flashed through my mind.

After about thirty minutes of driving, we finally arrived at Leo's company. I paid the cab driver and he drove off, leaving me standing in front of the imposing building that was right in front of me.

As I stared at the company, memories of the loving time I had with Leo flashed through my mind. I could remember when he always muttered sweet words in my ears and made me experience sweet things I never imagined I could. Leo couldn't possibly cheat on me, right?

I took a deep breath and braced myself before stepping into the company, and walked straight to the elevator that led to his office.

I needed answers to my question as soon as possible!

As the elevator door opened, I was now standing in front of Leo's office. For the first time in forever, I dreaded going in. My heart began to thump vigorously in my chest. What if it was true, what if it wasn't?

I tried shaking off the feeling of dread and panic that was threatening to overwhelm me and twisted the door knob. Immediately I entered inside, my eyes locked with the most perfect orbs I had ever seen in my life.

Subconsciously, I took a deep breath to steady my raging emotions. I didn't want to show him my fury just yet.

"Uh…hey babe…"I called with a forced smile on my lips as I began walking towards the table. "How are you?"

"I.. I'm…"he stuttered as he stared at me as though he had seen a terrifying ghost. He then cleared his throat, broke eye contact with me and spoke up. "I'm good, just busy though…what brings you here?"

The smile on my face widened as I approached the table and placed my hand on it, staring deep into his eyes.

"You know…"I began. "I was just missing my sugar plum and I decided to come to your office and snuggle in your arms"

"You should not have, though…"he said as he skimmed through a document that was in front of him. "I'm really busy right now and you should have waited for me at home"

"Tsk…that wouldn't be any fun, you know…"I clicked my tongue. "And besides, today is our anniversary, remember?"

"Oh.."he muttered, it was clear he had forgotten about it. The thought of this made my heart clench with pain but I took a deep breath and played it cool.

I then let out a painful laugh, shaking my head.

"What was that about?"He suddenly asked as he raised his head to look at me.

"I heard it Leo…"I muttered as I lowered my head and stared down at the table. "I heard all of it"

"All of what?"He asked, his tone laced with confusion.

Slowly, I brought up my head and met his gaze. "Your intimate moments with May,"I muttered.

Immediately those words left my mouth, his eyes widened with a mixture of shock and surprise.

"You called me earlier, probably by mistake and I heard all of it, '' I continued. "I heard you confess your love for her,I heard literally everything. Even her moans of ecstacy. Did our relationship not mean anything to you?"

"Oh…about that.."he muttered as he shifted his attention back to the document. "I..I.."he stuttered as he raised his head again and stared at me. It looked as though he was hesitating to tell me what he had in mind.

"Leo, talk to me, do you love me?"I asked, my voice coming out cracked. "Do you value all the time we have spent together as couples?"

He then lowered his head again and shook it slowly and almost immediately, my heart broke into a million pieces.

"I..I don't know, Nina"he spoke up, I could see a flash of guilt and hesitation flicker in his eyes. "But I think my heart belongs to May, not you. I do love you though, but not in the way you expect. I see you as my little sister, that's all. Both of us just misread the signs"

"Wh…what?"I stuttered, my eyes widening with shock. Why the hell would be telling me this now?! "But we've spent one good year together as couples!"I said, my voice laced with pain.

"I.. I'm sorry. I just loved you as a brother and didn't want to hurt you"he replied.

"Nina…I'm sorry"I suddenly heard May's voice behind and slowly turned to meet her gaze.

Tears were streaming down her cheeks and she had a guilty expression plastered on her face.

"I didn't mean to sleep with your boyfriend, please"she said again as the tears streamed down endlessly. "He…he needed someone to comfort him and…and I was there. I'm very sorry, please. Truth be told, I have always been jealous of your perfect life and perfect boyfriend. I just wanted to experience what you always felt. You have everything, Nina, and I have nothing"

She then walked towards me and tried touching my hands but I jerked her hands off my body, my eyes blazing with anger.

"Don't you dare lay your hands on me, Nina,"I snorted. "We are sisters for heaven's sake! Why?!"I was short of words and confused.

I could feel my anger build up within me as I struggled to hold onto the last strings of sanity. I gritted my teeth with anger and frustration, my fists clenching into a tight ball by my sides.

"You…"I pointed at May who had a guilty expression plastered on her face. "I fucking hate you!"

"Hey…hey…Nina"Leo's voice rang out. At this moment, I didn't feel the sparks I once felt whenever I heard his voice, it felt as though he had become distant. "Calm down, please"

"Wh…"I tried saying it but my words got stuck in my throat. I had a lot to say but I couldn't let the words out. I was overwhelmed with pain, my worst nightmare had become a reality. Never in my life had I ever imagined this day. Endless streams of tears fell down my cheeks and I stared at Leo, short of words.

I was hurt and broken.

Without saying anything and with a heavy heart, I spun my heels and walked out of the office.
