Chapter 8 The Woman Who Came to the Door

In the office, Matthew's glare could've cut through steel as he stared at Evelyn. "Enough! Get out!"

His voice was ice cold.

Evelyn's eyes flickered, trying to look pitiful, but as soon as Matthew glared harder, she quickly got off his lap.

"Matthew, don't be mad." Thinking fast, Evelyn grabbed a few gift boxes and shoved them into his hands. "I brought these back from abroad, designed by a master. Check them out."

Matthew's face darkened, and he tossed all the gift boxes straight into the trash.

Evelyn was stunned; this time she had clearly upset him.

She said pitifully, "I've been abroad for so long, and we've barely seen each other. Don't you miss me?"

Matthew pulled out a wet wipe and meticulously cleaned the areas she had touched. "Ms. Thomas, next time you try something, think about our relationship first. Don't blame me for getting angry."

The warning was clear, and Evelyn was too scared to breathe.

Even though their families were close, her relationship with Matthew was nothing special. She had intended to dig into the Stellar Group's situation, but seeing the beauty in the reception room had made her feel threatened.

Now, her foolish actions had pissed him off.

Matthew looked past her towards the door, seemingly wondering if Harper was still around.

He pressed the intercom button, his brow furrowed.

"Escort Ms. Thomas out," he said coldly.

Evelyn's face fell instantly. Did he have to be so ruthless?

Pax acted quickly, dragging Evelyn out.

"Are you crazy? Let go!" Evelyn screamed, but before she could finish her threat, she was thrown out of the office.

Pax's eyes were cold. "Ms. Thomas, do you want to see what it's like to fly from the top floor?"

Upon hearing this, Evelyn's legs went weak. She swallowed hard and angrily entered the elevator.

Meanwhile, Harper was brought back to the office by Pax. Matthew sat leisurely, as if nothing had happened.

"Mr. Moore, the revised proposal is ready for your review." Harper handed over the document, her eyes unconsciously glancing at his neck, trying to confirm something.

Matthew didn't take the document; instead, he pulled her into his arms.

Harper gasped and looked around. Thankfully, Pax wasn't there. The mix of cologne and tobacco on Matthew was intoxicating and nerve-wracking.

Harper glanced at him. His profile was sharp, and with her contact lenses on, she could see every pore clearly.

But the next second, Harper's face fell. "Mr. Moore, you have quite the appetite!" she said sarcastically.

The thought of Matthew being close to another woman made Harper feel uncomfortable and resistant.

"Want to know my appetite? Why not try it yourself?" Matthew's voice was right by her ear, his breath hot, making her ears turn red.

Harper's body stiffened, and it felt as if a feather gently brushed against her heart, making it itch. She didn't dare to move.

"Mr. Moore, you have plenty of women throwing themselves at you. Why bother me?" Harper said, trying to sound calm but clearly annoyed.

Just as she tried to struggle, Matthew held her tighter. Harper panicked. "The door's not closed. It wouldn't be good if someone saw us!"

"You weren't afraid that night, and now you're scared?" Matthew chuckled, his eyes deep. "Ms. Anderson, do you really feel nothing?"

"Feel what?" she played dumb.

"Seeing me with another woman, aren't you jealous?" Matthew pressed closer, his eyes searching hers.

Harper bit her lip and said stubbornly, "With so many women around you, who am I to be jealous?"

The air got thick with tension. Harper thought he'd blow up, given his pride.

But instead of getting mad, Matthew held her even tighter, making her wince in pain.

"So, you're a little wildcat." Matthew laughed softly, suddenly pressing her onto the sofa, his whole body on top of her.

The pressure was overwhelming, making Harper's heart race as memories of that night came flooding back.

"Mr. Moore, do you want to make headlines?" Harper's voice was sharp, her hands clutching her dress tightly against her chest.

Matthew glanced at her, the seductive dress catching his eye. "Dressed like this, aren't you trying to seduce me?" His voice was deep and magnetic.

Harper was speechless, her heart pounding like a drum. Just as she was thinking of a way to escape, her phone rang.

She hurried to grab it, but Matthew snatched it away with lightning speed.

"Who's calling?" he raised an eyebrow, a playful smile on his lips.

"Give it back!" Harper's face darkened, her tone leaving no room for negotiation.

Matthew glanced at the screen, then tossed the phone back to her indifferently.

Harper answered the call, her voice cold. "What is it?" The air seemed to freeze as she waited.

Suddenly, Matthew lightly pecked her on the corner of her mouth. The unexpected kiss startled Harper so much that she almost dropped her phone.

"Harper, what's going on over there?" Emily's voice came through the receiver, full of shock.

Harper's heart skipped a beat. Emily must have heard it!

She cursed inwardly. What was Matthew doing? "It's nothing, go on."

Harper tried to stay calm, but inside she was in turmoil. Emily was clearly still processing the "sound," pausing for a few seconds before asking, "Are you coming back to the office?"

Harper gave a few perfunctory responses and quickly hung up.

Turning back, Harper glared at Matthew. "What are you doing?"

Matthew looked innocent, a slight smile on his lips. "Sorry, I just couldn't help myself."

Harper's mouth twitched. She cursed inwardly. Matthew was really good at finding excuses.

She didn't want Emily to catch wind of this and spread rumors.

So, Harper tried to keep her tone calm. "Mr. Moore, I've been very polite. Could you please show some mercy and not push me so hard?"

"Push you hard?" Matthew raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing as he looked Harper up and down, a playful smile on his lips.

"Between us, who started the flirting first?" Matthew asked, his tone carrying a hint of challenge.

"That night was an accident!" Harper quickly waved her hand, looking sincere.

"I don't think so," Matthew said lightly, his tone firm.

Harper gave a self-deprecating smile, her mind clear. "Mr. Moore, if you like novelty, that's none of my business. But with so many beauties around you, why make things difficult for me?"

Matthew chuckled, his eyes deep. "Once you leave the Smith family, you'll understand."

At these words, Harper almost rolled her eyes.

Was Matthew's hearing just for show? Did he not hear a word she said?

But she held back. The project was still in Matthew's hands, and it was crucial for her to secure her assets after breaking off the engagement.
