Chapter 8
The events of the previous day lingered in my mind—the thrill of delivering the chaperone droid to Elaina Semper and the weight of the secrets I now carried. But more than that, Kael's encouraging words and the way he had watched me with admiration stirred something deep within me.
As I began my day, I found myself glancing out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Kael. He had been a steadfast presence in my life, always supportive and ready to lend a hand. Our friendship had grown deeper over time, but I sensed an unspoken bond forming, one that hinted at something more.
Kael arrived shortly after, his entrance marked by the familiar jingle of the workshop door. “Morning, Val!” he called out, his bright smile instantly lifting my spirits. “I heard you had a successful delivery yesterday.”
“Good morning, Kael!” I replied, trying to hide the flutter in my chest. “It went well. Elaina seemed really pleased with Eloise.”
Kael stepped closer, his eyes sparkling with genuine interest. “I knew you could do it. You always find a way to impress.” He leaned against the workbench, his presence comforting yet electrifying. “What’s next on your agenda?”
A surge of excitement bubbled within me at the prospect of sharing my plans. “I want to refine some of Eloise’s features based on what I observed yesterday. If I can make her even more engaging for Isa'bella, it might strengthen my position in the household.”
Kael nodded, his expression serious yet warm. “You’re going to make a real impact, I can feel it. Just be careful, alright? You’re walking a fine line.”
I met his gaze, my heart racing. “I know. But I have to do this.”
As we worked together throughout the morning, the atmosphere between us shifted. Kael occasionally brushed against me as we reached for the same tool, our hands lingering for a moment longer than necessary. Each contact sent a thrill through me, igniting a tension that I couldn’t ignore.
After a while, Ageis joined us, her usual demeanor slightly more reserved. I noticed her glancing at me and Kael with a mix of curiosity and something else—an emotion she seemed reluctant to acknowledge.
“Hey, what are you two working on?” she asked, trying to sound casual, but I sensed an underlying tension in her voice.
“Just refining Eloise,” I replied, my eyes flicking between the two. “Kael’s been a huge help.”
Ageis nodded, her expression unreadable. “That’s great. I’ll leave you to it then.” She moved to a corner of the workshop, focusing on her own tasks, but I could sense her unease.
As the hours passed, Kael and I continued to collaborate, our conversation flowing easily. We exchanged playful banter, sharing stories and laughter that filled the workshop with warmth. I felt a growing connection with Kael, a spark of something deeper igniting between us.
At one point, as we took a break, Kael leaned back against the workbench, his gaze fixed on me. “You know, you’re really incredible. I admire your passion and determination.”
My heart raced at his words. “Thank you, Kael. That means a lot coming from you.” I looked into his eyes, feeling a magnetic pull drawing us closer. “I couldn’t have done it without your support.”
There was a moment of silence, the air thick with unspoken possibilities. Kael’s expression softened as he stepped closer, his voice dropping to a more intimate tone. “Val, I—”
Before he could finish, Ageis cleared her throat, breaking the moment. “I thought I heard something fall!” she exclaimed, trying to mask her own tension. I glanced at her, a hint of confusion mingling with frustration.
Kael stepped back, the moment dissipating. “Maybe we should get back to work,” he suggested, though his eyes still held the lingering warmth of our connection.
The rest of the day passed in a blur of activity, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of what almost transpired between Kael and me. Ageis, on the other hand, seemed increasingly distant, stealing glances at me but remaining silent about her own feelings. She watched us interact, the two of us effortlessly connecting, and an unfamiliar ache settled in her chest.
As evening approached, I decided to take a break and stepped outside for some fresh air. The twilight sky was painted in shades of pink and orange, a beautiful backdrop for my swirling thoughts. Just as I inhaled deeply, I heard footsteps behind me. It was Kael.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked, leaning against the doorframe.
“Not at all,” I replied, my heart fluttering at his presence. We stood side by side, watching the sunset, the moment feeling charged with unspoken words.
“I’ve been thinking about everything,” Kael began, his voice low. “About us.”
I turned to him, my breath hitching in my throat. “What do you mean?”
“I mean… there’s something between us, isn’t there?” Kael asked, his eyes searching mine. “I feel it, and I can’t help but wonder if you do too.”
I opened my mouth to respond, but Ageis’s voice rang out from inside the workshop, interrupting our moment once again. “Hey, Val! I need your help with something!”
Frustration bubbled within me as I glanced back at the workshop, then at Kael, whose expression had shifted to one of disappointment.
“Let’s talk later?” he suggested, his voice tinged with longing.
“Definitely,” I promised, my heart racing as I returned to the workshop, leaving the sunset—and the moment—behind.
As the day came to a close, the tension between Kael and me simmered just beneath the surface, while Ageis wrestled with her own feelings, silently hoping for a chance to express what I couldn’t yet say. The air was thick with anticipation, and I knew that whatever lay ahead, it would be filled with both challenges and possibilities.
