Chapter 3 She and Matthew Are Getting Hot and Heavy!
Robert, David and Ella were all nonplussed. What could Matthew possibly want with a secretary he'd just met for like, two minutes?
Even Robert was scratching his head. But he was the first to bow and nod.
Once they cleared out, Matthew didn't say a word to Calliope. Instead, he pulled her work file from the stack and started flipping through it, page by page.
As he went through the pages, Calliope felt like her whole life was in his hands.
Every second was torture. The pressure Matthew exuded as the boss made Calliope's heart race like crazy.
She was pretty sure that her heart would explode if this kept up.
She finally gathered the courage to speak. "Mr. Moore, you can just pretend last night never happened. I’ve never met you."
Calliope had fathomed out this was her best move under this circumstances.
After all, as one of the heirs of Ascend Global Group and a married man, Matthew would value his reputation. If people found out he was involved with his secretary, it would be a mess.
She wanted to get ahead of him and make her stance clear. But she guessed wrong. Matthew didn't care about his reputation at all.
Chairman Aiden sent Matthew to clean up the branch because he was ruthless in getting what he wanted.
Morality? Reputation? To Matthew, they were nothing.
But hearing Calliope's words made Matthew pause in his document flipping. "Never met me?"
He looked up, casually twirling a pen. "So, your sense of morality isn't that strong, huh? Are you really going to deny everything? Have we truly never met?"
Calliope's lips moved, but she didn't know how to respond. Her sense of morality had vanished the moment she stepped into that hotel. After all, she had sold herself.
But she couldn't admit it now.
What if Matthew was trying to trap her? Denying it was her only hope!
Calliope said seriously, "I really haven't met you."
This answer was unexpected, but from her standpoint, it made sense.
Matthew didn't doubt her determination, but he was curious about what made her decide this.
Calliope should have known that if Matthew were a petty boss, he would choose to make her future work in hell in exchange for her getaway at present.
Matthew said coldly, "Your lie after sex is just a responsible behaviour. I don't need a secretary who can't take responsibility."
Calliope was stunned. After a moment, she tentatively asked, "Do you want me to admit it, then use it to entangle you, and finally send me to jail for extortion?"
After being brainwashed by Ella and David, she now believed Matthew was a cold and ruthless person.
Matthew suddenly laughed, but it didn't reach his eyes, making him look even colder.
To be honest, Matthew did have such a plan. But Calliope's words intrigued him, and few women could achieve that; he found it more fun to keep her. Besides, the memory of her beauty from last night was still fresh.
Matthew said, "Why don't you try admitting it?"
Calliope said briefly, "Fine, I admit it."
Seeing no way out, she bent down again and said humbly, "But Mr. Moore, I really need this job. Please don't fire me!"
Matthew queried, "Is the salary from Ascend Global Group worth all the sufferings I might bring to you?"
"Yes," Calliope said, "It's worth it!"
Matthew questioned, "Are you so short of money that you had to sell yourself?"
He remembered that last night Calliope only wanted cash or a transfer, not exchangeable goods. Was she in urgent need of money?
Calliope straightened up. For this question, she could answer confidently.
She looked Matthew straight in the eyes and said, "Yes, very short, short enough to sell myself!"
But only for a second. Calliope couldn't withstand the pressure in Matthew's eyes and fixed her eyes on the ground again.
How pathetic! Calliope's sincerity didn't earn Matthew's forgiveness.
Calliope had performed well in the first half, but her last sentence greatly displeased Matthew.
Matthew despised people who would sell everything, including their feelings and bodies, for money.
This instantly extinguished the slight interest Calliope had sparked in him. He said tersely, "Leave."
Calliope quickly responded and fled the office! If she stayed any longer, she would have trouble breathing!
Back at her workstation, Ella and David immediately surrounded her, asking what she had talked about with Matthew when she came in.
But Calliope kept her mouth shut, and focused on her work.
"Stop asking. Do you think she would tell you?"
At that moment, an unpleasant voice came from the doorway.
It was Lisa Scott, the head of the marketing department.
In the company, Lisa was probably the executive who interacted with the president the most, aside from the secretarial office.
After hearing the arrival of Matthew downstairs, Lisa rushed over. She had been eyeing Matthew for a long time! She had dressed up meticulously today to welcome Matthew, only to be told by her informant that Calliope had been left alone in the office with Matthew for a long time!
How could Lisa not be jealous!
Lisa thought to herself, 'Calliope usually relies on her good figure to seduce people in the company, while pretending to be weak. It is disgusting!'
Lisa said with a sneer, "Calliope, you usually seem so weak, but I didn't expect you to be so cunning, catching Mr. Moore's eye on the first day."
David and Ella both frowned at this remark.
There was no evidence, and Lisa was being too blunt!
But it was a fact that Calliope had been left alone for a private conversation. Even if they wanted to defend her, they had no grounds.
They had only been working for half a month, and it wasn't worth offending a senior manager for Calliope.
Calliope stood up with her cup, and as she passed by Lisa, she turned her head and said lightly, "Mr. Moore is already married. Aren't you afraid of being held accountable for spreading rumors about him?"
This was brand new information that Calliope had found out before her.
Lisa was furious! She said with a sinister smile, "Fine, you act all aloof and noble. Let's see how this plays out!"
After spiting out her harsh words, Lisa turned to head towards the president's office, even bumping into Calliope's shoulder!
After being targeted like this, Calliope didn't chase after her to argue. She quietly went to the break room to make a double espresso.
Though in fever, Calliope didn't want to make mistakes at work.
On the first day of the new CEO's arrival, everyone was so busy they couldn't catch a break. Calliope applied herself harder to make a good impression on Matthew.
Most of the secretarial work was reported by David, with Calliope and Ella assisting him.
Matthew didn't call her again or cause her any trouble, seemingly not planning to pursue the matter further.
Thank God, Calliope just wanted to get through the probation period.
After a few hectic days, the group's operations finally settled into a routine, and Calliope gradually put the first day's events behind her, focusing on her work.
One day, Calliope went to make coffee. As soon as she entered the break room on the twelfth floor, she heard a sharp laugh.
"Really? That Calliope is so impressive, hooking up with Mr. Moore on the first day?"
