Chapter 5 Tragically Fired!
"Why'd you hit her?" Matthew asked her. It was just a short question, but it felt like the temperature dropped instantly.
Calliope's breath hitched for a moment.
Matthew expected her to give a reasonable explanation. But she didn't. Instead, she just showed a hint of disdain in her eyes and stayed silent.
"Can't even give a reason?" Matthew asked, confused.
What could she say? Calliope smiled bitterly inside. Should she admit she hit Lisa because she heard rumors about them hooking up in the office?
Matthew was another main character, and considering their first meeting... Calliope couldn't say it, nor did she want to.
Some things were better left unsaid.
But then, someone in the crowd weakly said, "Calliope's behaviour is against company policy and illegal, right?"
"And she would hurt the reputation of our company if you let her stay"
"Calliope, who usually seems so quiet and delicate, turns out to be so vicious."
Calliope turned her head to look. The women who was speaking a moment ago instantly clammed up and lowered her head. They were the ones gossiping with Lisa earlier, now trying their best to shift the blame onto Calliope.
Yeah, Calliope did hit Lisa, but she didn't do those other things.
Calliope got it. These people wanted to focus the conflict on her but didn't want Matthew to dig into the reason.
It would be best if she took the blame and left the company, so no one would find out their deeds.
At that point, explaining was useless. Calliope looked at Matthew and said, "Yeah, I hit her."
"Mr. Moore, did you hear that? She admitted it!" Lisa, afraid of missing the chance to press her advantage, quickly added, "According to the rules, she should be fired! And since she broke company policy on her own, she shouldn't get any severance pay!"
At the mention of salary, Calliope lowered her head, sick with apprehension.
Did she really have to leave?
After struggling for days, she still couldn't avoid this outcome.
Neither Matthew nor Lisa probably wanted to see her again.
Calliope took a deep breath, clenched her fist, and said, "Fine, I get it."
She turned to leave but was stopped by Matthew.
"It's not done."
Calliope looked back at him in disbelief! What more did he want from her? If she wasn't worried about provoking Matthew, she would have thrown out that recording long ago!
At that moment, Lisa was overjoyed!
Not only would Calliope be kicked out of the company, but she would also have to pay a price! And Matthew was personally helping her! It was perfect for everyone to see how much Matthew valued Lisa!
Calliope's beautiful eyes were full of surprise and sarcasm, but there was no fear, as if she wasn't fired but resigned.
"Mr. Moore, I," As soon as she called out his name, it was like a bucket of cold water was poured over her, making her completely sober.
The person in front of her was Matthew, the son of the Moore Family, a powerful figure.
And what about Calliope? An orphan with no parents, dragging along the already bankrupt Brown Family's Sophia for surgery.
Having no money was one thing, but Calliope couldn't lose the ability to earn money. If she wanted to keep surviving, she couldn't afford to fall out with Matthew.
Matthew watched as the emotions in her eyes shifted from anger to grievance, then to calmness and indifference, finally settling into a dead calm.
The intense emotions that had briefly surged in Calliope's eyes all vanished.
Matthew was puzzled. He thought to himself, 'Why do her eyes seem to speak?'
Calliope walked up to Lisa, who was still sitting on the ground, and slightly bent down, looking at her with lowered eyes as she said, "I'm sorry, Lisa. I shouldn't have kicked you over with the chair, and I shouldn't have beaten your ass."
Lisa's face turned extremely ugly, and the onlookers gasped.
Even the corners of Matthew's lips curved into an almost imperceptible smile. Was this an apology or a jab at Lisa's sore spot?
Lisa was so angry she could barely speak!
Calliope, however, calmly asked Matthew, "Can I go now?"
Matthew said indifferently, "Go back to work. If it happens again, you'll be fired."
"Okay," Calliope instinctively replied, then turned to pack her things, but after taking a step, she realized something was wrong and quickly turned back!
In an instant, Calliope's eyes looked like a tree swaying in the breeze, with sunlight filtering through the leaves, casting a dazzling and enchanting light. This moment of surprise pleased Matthew.
Matthew couldn't help but think of that night when Calliope was cornered by him, unable to resist, with tears in her eyes, lightly biting her lip, suppressing her soft whimpers, and throwing herself into his arms.
"Mr. Moore!" Lisa stood up in disbelief, saying, "Calliope hit me in front of everyone. Are you just going to let her go?"
Could there really be something between them?
Matthew glanced at her coldly, like a knife cutting through her heart. "But she already apologized. You almost killed her."
Calliope instinctively touched the wound on her neck. It was almost healed, but it still hurt a bit.
Lisa kept silent, eyes on the verge of tears. They seemed to harbor a mixed feelings of anger, bitterness and remorse that she should have failed to try harder to get Calliope fired.
After Matthew left, Calliope quickly pushed through the crowd and returned to the top floor.
Since Matthew had given Calliope another chance, no matter his reasons, she had to seize it! But why did Matthew let her go? Was it just because of that absurd one-night stand?
Back in the office, Ella took a shirt out of her bag. "Change your clothes."
Calliope looked down and saw her shirt was stained with blood, looking like a bright red flower blooming in the snow.
Calliope said, "Thank you." Taking the shirt to the bathroom, she checked her wound in the mirror.
The wound wasn't too deep, didn't hurt much, and wouldn't affect her work.
After changing her clothes and returning to the office, she found that David had already prepared a leave request form. "Go home and rest. After what happened today, you probably can't focus on work."
Calliope said, "Thank you, but I won't take leave."
Calliope casually put her things in the drawer and immediately got back to work!
"Are you a superwoman or something?" Ella couldn't help but complain, "First, you had a fierce fight with Lisa, then you bled so much, and now you can still work?"
Was Calliope even human?!
