CHAPTER 4
A wolf with a grey coat and sea blue eyes emerged from the bushes right in front of me and it takes everything in me to stop a scream from leaving my throat. It’s no use anyway the wolf can probably smell the fear that I felt seeping into my bones.
The wolf observed me for sometime circling me like a predator would its prey. I finally understood all those little bunnies in their last moments.
I mean how can you not be scared to death when you have an something that’s taller than you even on all fours looking at you like that? Closing my eyes I waited for.... what exactly? I don’t know but what I didn’t expect was to open my eyes and see a half naked man in front of me.
A very manly half naked man, might I add. I found myself staring into those deep pools, I felt myself drawn to the very depths of the ocean through those eyes. Realising had been staring for too long I looked away.
Big mistake, because my eyes were immediately drawn to that broad chest of pure muscle. Looking back at his face I see him doing the exact same thing, studying through those ocean depths that were getting darker with each passing second.
That was when it dawned on me... I was here in the middle of the woods alone... with a wolf that was stronger, faster and a lot more powerful than I was and will ever be.
When he finally parted those perfectly full lips I heard his voice, a very wonderful voice might I add, say, “Why are you here, human?” That snapped me out of my daze. Does everyone really have to point out the fact that I’m human every damn time?! I’m well aware of my species thank you very much!
Looking away from him I focus my eyes on the forest floor, “I was out for a run.” I said.
“And what are you doing here, in the castle?” Is this guy dense or something? Ok, I know I’m the only human in this castle but anybody could guess why I was in this castle, it’s not like I’m here because I absolutely love their amazing company.
I stopped myself from saying something that could land me in trouble and said, “I work here in the castle.”
“You work here, in the castle?!” No, in wonderland. I held back a sigh wondering who this person was and why he was asking me so many questions. Using the trees for support I stand up getting ready to make my way back to the castle.
Giving him a slight bow I heading Yes sir and goodbye, I’m sorry for any inconveniences I may have caused.” Then I turned around and started to make my way to the castle, using the tree as my support.
From the corner of my eye I see him follow me, or at least that’s what it looks like he’s doing. I know he’s probably heading to the castle like I am but my already anxious mind decides to interpret it as him following me.
You see I’m normally a very welcoming person but I woke up in tears today unable to go back to sleep and I came out here to clear my head only to be chased by a wolf! So excuse me if I’m a little bit antsy!
I tried to increase my pace as subtly as possible but I could only do so much with a twisted ankle. I looked at him through the corner of my eye to see if he noticed but his face was as stoic as stoic could get.
We continue out walk in a tense silence that did nothing to soothe my already frayed nerves, and by the time we had reached the castle I was a nervous wreck.
I looked at him again from the corner of my eye trying to remember his face. I’m pretty sure if I had seen him I would have remembered his face... it’s not really one I could easily forget....
I guess I wasn’t as subtle as I thought, because he turned his head and locked gazes with me. I sucked in a harsh breath, there it was again... that feeling, like I was going under water and sinking to the very depths of the ocean. I don’t know how long I stayed down there but I didn’t feel like leaving anytime soon.
And I didn’t... until I heard someone clear their throat. I jerked like I had been struck by lightening and snapped my eyes back to the ground. Anastasia Rose what I wrong with you! You don’t go around looking wolves in the eye! What if he takes this as disrespect ?? What am I going to do?!
My heart was beating so fast I thought it was going to burst right out of my chest. I’m sure every single person within a five mile radius could hear it.
Just when I thought my heart was finally going to burst right out of my chest, I heard someone say, “What took you so long? They almost found out!”
“I don’t think they would make such a big deal out of me going for a run Ed.”
“Then clearly you don’t know them well enough.” He just sighs at the guy, who I now know to be Ed, not replying.
I think that was my cue to leave. As silently as I could I slowly inched away hoping I would go unnoticed, I should have known better. Hope was never on my side after all.
Just as I was about to slip away I stepped on twig... a blasted twig! The crunching sound filled the air as both of their gazes snapped my way. I don’t understand... how could I have such a terrible luck. I just want to live my days in peace without getting in trouble or getting noticed really... is that too much to ask?
I felt uncomfortable under their gazes. One was looked at me with eyes full of curiosity while the other looked at me with something I couldn’t quite understand... but it was something dark that made me want to... what exactly? I don’t know...
“Who are you?” The Ed guy asked.
“Anastasia.”
“You’re... human?” No, the hermit crab.
Rather than saying the words that are right at the tip of my tongue begging to be said I say, “Yes.”
“Then what are you doing here?” I’m really getting tired of having to say the same thing, is it really that strange for a human to be here?
“I live and work here.” He keeps on looking at me like I’m a strange creature he didn’t understand. I’m pretty sure there are still a lot of humans out there... it’s not like we were going extinct or anything so he really didn’t need to look so hard.
In the end he lost interest in me and I continued on my merry way...
