Chapter 4 A Sudden Kiss

I was devastated. Shocked. Furious. Completely shattered.

It was as if the world around me came to a sudden stand-still and I was stuck frozen in time, being forced to bear witness to the terrible sight in front of me.

All that time during Peter’s disappearance, I was convinced that something horrible had happened to him. The guy had suddenly cut off any and all contact with me, all without ever officially breaking things off between us.

Before I had time to process what was happening, my feet were suddenly drawing me closer to where I could hear the sweet, idiotic nothings Peter started to spew into the woman’s ear.

“So, what shall it be tonight, sweetheart?” he cooed while pulling the girl closer. “Will you have steak or lobster tonight?”

The woman was flushed with bubbling excitement. “Steak and lobster? Since when can you afford such a luxury?” she asked jokingly.

Peter smirked, causing my hand to twitch with the need to slap him clear across the face.

“You know that I’m bound to get that promotion at work, plus tonight is a special occasion,” he explained. “It is, after all, our one-year anniversary.”

One year?!

Oh, God. I was positive I was going to pass out or, worse, become sick.

The woman continued to smile. “Well, now that you’re no longer being stalked by that annoying girl, I suppose we can finally get on with our lives,” she remarked.

“What? You mean Mia?” he asked. Peter let out a dry, excessive laugh. “Oh, please. Mia was hardly anything to deal with. Of course, she was rather troublesome with her relentless bantering and hounding for my attention. She was utterly in love with me, but she was never really worth my time.”

Oh, yeah. For sure, I was going to be sick. It felt like I had been the one smacked in the face. I’d suddenly realized that Peter hadn’t left because of the baby, but because he’d been cheating on me this entire time. It caused my anger to become uncontrollable.

All that time, I believed that he just wasn’t ready to be a father and that he needed some time to adjust. I was praying and hoping that if he faced his responsibilities, I would come to forgive him because he was, after all, the father of my child.

But in reality, Peter was just a despicable person.

“How interesting,” I called out. I succeeded in capturing the couple’s attention almost instantly. “If I recall, it was you who was relentlessly pursuing me.”

Peter’s face paled several shades whiter while his eyes widened in shock. His mouth fell open and not a single coherent word came out. Of course, he was quick to recover. He smoothed over his initial look of shock and pursed his lips into a bitter smirk.

“Ignore her,” he said. “I have no idea who this girl is or why she’s even speaking to us.”

“What’s the matter, Petter?” My tone was filled with lethal venom. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to your new friend?”

His eyes filled with fear as the girl on his arm turned to glare at him. “Peter, do you actually know this girl?”

“Oh, he knows me very well. I’m not only his girlfriend, but I’m now I’ve become the carrier of his unborn child whom he decided to abandon,” I hissed.

The woman recoiled from Peter’s arms and sent her hand flying across the side of his face. We watched her storm off, wearing a distinct look of disgust. I’d be lying if I said that I didn't feel a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing that I destroyed whatever relationship they had between them.

Meanwhile, Peter turned back to face me and was practically turning red with fiery anger. Good. I was glad to see that the two of us were deeply infuriated and embarrassed now.

“Are you happy now?” he shouted bitterly. “You couldn’t simply take the hint that things between us were over that you had to come out and search for me like some lost puppy?”

He raked his eyes over me with disgust.

“Christ, you’re just as shameless as ever, trying to cling to me like some leech,” he spat. “Why would anyone bother to give someone like you even a second glance? You hardly anything to look at—not to mention that you’re wolfless.”

Okay, that one struck me a bit deeper than I would’ve cared to admit.

“I’m not wolfless. You know that my wolf is just dormant,” I retired angrily.

Peter scoffed, “You’re lucky that I even decided to glance in your direction. And if you seriously think that little runt inside of you is mine then you’re just as delusional as well. For all I know you could have been easily whoring yourself around with half the city.”

Suddenly, Peter’s attention turned to the figure that appeared beside me. Amongst everything that was going on, I hardly even noticed that James had made his way over to me. Unlike Peter, James kept his demeanor reserved in silence while hiding his face behind a pair of dark sunglasses.

“And just so you’re aware, pal. Mia is quite boring in bed, no man could truly desire such a charmless woman.”

“Yes, well, only trashy men with zero charm would ever discuss these experiences as a boast,” James countered back. “Perhaps the only reason Mia appeared bored was because of your sheer incompetence. I’ll have you know that she’s quite passionate in bed.”

My face flushed with embarrassment, but I was far too compelled to keep up with James’ story to not play along.

“That’s sweet of you to say, James,” I hummed. “And now that you mention it, you’re right. Compared to you, Peter was utterly worthless.”

Peter looked as though he were mere seconds away from blowing his top. I don’t think I’d ever seen him so angry.

“Come off it. Who even are you, some sorry-ass actor she paid you to pull off this little skit?” he asked vexingly. “Jesus Christ, Mia. You’re nothing but a pitiful, deceiving person.”

I raised a single brow and smiled. “Oh, really? If he was a paid actor and all of this was just for show, then would I do this?”

I was fed up with Peter’s ugly taunts and nauseating insults. I turned toward James and curled my hands into the lapels of his suit. Bringing myself to my toes, I pulled him into me and placed a bold kiss on his lips.
