Chapter 6: Be Grateful

Julia’s POV:

It took me over 1 hour of tedious driving through heavy traffic to reach that goddamn airport. Until the last moment, I kept on contemplating whether to go or not but hearing that Dad was very sick from yesterday, a part of my heart was unable to defy his command.

Reluctantly when I stepped foot inside the airport building, the first sight that made my stomach churn with agony and disgust was to watch Melanie and Marco walking towards my direction, holding hands together like a cute lovey-dovey couple.

While I was enduring the most difficult time of my life alone, my heart was set ablaze from rage when I saw Marco smiling and chatting with her as if he had completely omitted my existence from his life. While all this time I was planning a beautiful future with him, Marco had already moved on from this relationship way too long ago…

Thus I swore to myself that I wouldn’t show any sign of distress on my face before them, no matter how much my heart was breaking to see them together. I put on my sunglasses to cover my puffy eyes and stood confidently tall while crossing my arms over my chest.

Marco was the first one to notice me among the crowd of people, and the radiant smile he had on his face until now dimmed a little.

Soon after him, Melanie also saw me standing there and ogling at them, but she was shameless enough to greet me with a big fake smile, reaching closer, “Sis, you’re always so punctual as expected. Thank you for coming to pick us up—”

“Aren’t you supposed to be sick from what you’ve told Dad?” But cutting in between her words, I sounded very hoarse from my tone without paying any attention to Marco standing beside her, “Judging from the amount of makeup you have put on your face, you seem very fine rather than faking any sickness.”

“H-Haha,” Melanie gave out a small nervous chuckle from hearing my question, but as if her cunning mind had already thought of an idea, she answered, “No, I am unwell today, sis. I can’t share every little detail with Dad, that’s why you must’ve misunderstood. Last night Marco was…pretty rough in bed since it was our first night after our engagement… And because of that, I have a terrible backache today. That’s why I really needed someone to pick me up from here.”

Disgusting! Her audacity to speak about her dirty deeds with my ex-fiance right before my face made me realize she was the perfect trash that a cheating bastard like Marco deserved. As if Marco was also flushed by her remark, he nudged her with his elbow, holding a small smile.

But Melanie seemed a little disappointed to watch me holding a stoic face even after hearing that dirty reason, as she must’ve badly wished to watch me devastated instead.

After a brief intense silence, Melanie walked closer and handed me the metal handle of her trolley bag, before she urged, “Sis, my arms are also aching…so please could you carry these bags to the car—”

“THWACK!”

But before she could finish her mumble, I fiercely kicked on her trolley bag, sending it several meters away from us on that smooth airport floor. Most of the people around us seemed to be awestruck at my action, especially Marco, who gasped at me, “Julia? What’re you doing!?”

“Miss Julia Davis, be mindful of me when you address me from now onwards, Mr. Marco Tevett.” I scorned him using my deep low voice, and then averted my glare towards Melanie who held a stunned look on her face towards me, “Seems like you’re the one who misunderstood my presence here. I showed up because Dad had asked me to do it, though I am disgusted to hear that you faked your sickness to him and made him worry.

“But how dare you ask me to grab your luggage? Do you think of me as your Chauffeur or something?”

“Sis…I know why are you being like this to me…” Like always, Melanie put on her victimized expression, purposely trying to attract the attention of all the passersby watching around us, “But…no matter what happens, you shouldn't openly show your hatred for your sister like this—”

“Step-sister.” I coldly intervened between her words, intently raising my pitch to make sure other people would hear me as well. “And after my sister stole my boyfriend from me and even went on cheating with him behind my back for over a year…be grateful that I have only kicked your luggage and not you.”

“Hey, Julia…you’re being too rude towards her. At least it won’t kill you to speak a bit nicely, right?” Marco shamelessly tried to intervene again despite my warning before, making me realize he was truly being blinded by Melanie’s innocent facade.

But realizing all those passersby had heard my remark too and were ogling at Melanie with disgruntled looks, she tried to shuffle the entire blame on Marco, “He was the one who chose me instead of you, sis. It was his decision because he fell out of love with you. I didn’t even know he was planning to propose me there in the first place.

“So…you shouldn’t be blaming me for everything. I know you’re not attractive like me, but you’re still my sister…and I truly care for you.”

“Haha.” I couldn’t help but let out a bitter sneer at her answer while protruding my glare towards Marco once, “You’re right, he’s the one who chose you and that’s why, his existence doesn’t matter to me anymore.

“But, I hope you will be able to keep up with your confidence Melanie, because you won’t be able to hide your ugly, dark side from him with that heavy makeup forever. Anyway, I am very busy, so I just did my part by showing up here as Dad had asked me. Now, get a cab on your own or do whatever you want, I am off from here.”

“What? Wait, a second sis!” Baffled by my confident strike, when I was about to leave from there, Melanie grabbed my arm and yanked it a little forcibly which made the purse in my hand drop down on the floor.

I didn’t realize my purse chain was unzipped and thus the red diamond ring which that stranger had left on my ring finger slipped out of that bag, making me wince a little as I had lowkey forgotten about its existence after taking it off my finger.

But the sight of that beautiful ring didn’t fail to catch Melanie’s attention as she promptly picked it up from the floor! Rolling her brown eyes filled with shock, she gasped, “A red diamond ring? Is it…yours?”
