Chapter 006
~Michelle~
Saying I was embarrassed was an understatement. Jack's words echoed in my ears.
“I would have agreed with you, but fate can be a bitch sometimes.”
And at this point, fate was definitely a bitch playing mind games with me. Why in the world was Doctor Jaxon my neighbor? The man had seen me at one of the most humiliating moments of my life—sure, he'd helped—but all hopes of never having to lay eyes on him again had gone up in flames. Every time I opened my door, his was right there in full view.
Now, here I was, stuck next to him in an elevator.
The silence between us stretched after the awkward greetings. I wasn’t interested in making small talk—what could I possibly say?
Instead, as embarrassing as it sounds, I was ogling him. Dressed in black pants and a white T-shirt that hugged his sculpted muscles, the man was undeniably a sight to behold.
“So…” He cleared his throat, and I quickly averted my gaze, focusing on the numbers ticking by on the elevator panel.
“Going to work?” His tone was light, casual. I nodded, straightening my posture.
“Yeah.” My voice came out flustered. Great. Just great.
He raised an eyebrow, studying me. “Are you okay?”
I nodded again, not trusting myself to speak. His gaze swept down my body, and I saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes—a knowing look. My cheeks flamed red, and I gripped my bag tighter.
“I told you, Miss Lee, no testing of sex toys without medical supervision,” he said, his voice low. His gray eyes darkened slightly.
“I… I’m not testing anything,” I stammered, the lie slipping out effortlessly. After spending all night tweaking my prototype, I’d given it one last trial. I had to—I was submitting it today.
“Miss—”
Before he could finish, the elevator dinged, the doors sliding open. I bolted out so fast I nearly tripped, only saved by his hand grabbing my wrist.
I always got clumsy around Jaxon. If that wasn’t a sign to stay far, far away, I didn’t know what was.
“Scooting out like that in heels is dangerous,” he said, still holding my hand. I glanced at where his fingers curled around my wrist, and he quickly released me, tucking his hands into his pockets.
He tilted his head, his expression softening. “I mean it, Michelle. Testing those devices without supervision can end badly. Next time, it could be worse.”
I swallowed. “I…”
“Let’s make a deal,” he said, glancing at his watch before looking back at me. “Whenever you want to test your… devices, call me.”
“Excuse me?” I blinked at him, stunned.
He took a step back, completely unfazed. “It’d be safer for you—and prevent a repeat of the last incident.”
He gave a small smile before heading off, leaving me standing there speechless and red-faced.
The idea of Doctor Jaxon being present while I, well, tested things sent a hot rush through me. I needed to get this device out of me now, if only to start thinking straight.
Because there was no way in hell I was entertaining that idea.
