Chapter 038 The First Time Feeling This Nervous

Monica hadn't even had time to react when Alexander's arm swooped in, wrapping around her waist, lifting her up like she weighed nothing, and setting her down on the ground.

Then Joseph reached over and pulled Alexander out too.

But Monica was still sitting there, looking pale as a ghost, sweat dripping down her forehead.

Alexander frowned, worry etched in his eyes, and reached out a hand to her. "Get up."

Monica, a bit dazed, looked up at him and slowly shook her head. "No need, thank you, Mr. Smith."

She tried to push herself up off the ground, but her strength was gone. Just as she was about to topple over again, Alexander caught her and pulled her into his arms.

He couldn't help but feel annoyed. She was in such bad shape, yet she still wanted to keep her distance.

With one arm around her waist and the other under her legs, he lifted her up and headed for the club's main entrance, shouting over his shoulder, "Joseph, get the car ready!"

Joseph finally snapped out of it and hurried after them.

Stella stood there, glaring as Alexander hugged Monica and walked away.

Jealousy flared in her eyes.

Monica felt weak, but her mind was clear. She knew people were watching as they left the club. She struggled a bit and said weakly, "Mr. Smith, please put me down. I can walk on my own."

"Shut up!" Alexander's voice was tight with suppressed anger.

Joseph pulled the car up, then quickly got out and opened the back door.

Alexander placed Monica inside and climbed in after her.

Monica wanted to keep her distance, but she was freezing. Alexander pulled her into his arms, rubbing her back to warm her up.

Joseph tried to keep his eyes on the road but couldn't help sneaking glances in the rearview mirror. He'd never seen Alexander so rattled.

Alexander's cold voice cut through the air, "Focus on your driving."

Joseph snapped his eyes back to the road.

The car sped to the hospital.

Alexander carried Monica out and headed straight for the emergency department.

People around them stole glances.

Monica wanted him to put her down, but she was too weak to speak and just leaned into him.

A group of doctors and nurses came rushing over with a gurney.

Alexander gently placed her on it.

They wheeled her into the emergency room.

Alexander was left outside.

The doctor said, "Mr. Smith, don't worry, she doesn't seem to be in serious condition. We'll do a check-up first."

Alexander responded with a curt nod.

For an hour, he sat in a chair outside the emergency room. Joseph handed him a bottle of water. "Mr. Smith, have some water."

Alexander took the bottle, but he wasn't really in the mood to drink. His mind kept replaying Monica's condition in the elevator. She never used to be afraid of the dark, so what had changed?

She must've gone through something pretty rough to be that scared.

After a moment, he called out, "Joseph, find out what Monica's been through these past few years."

"These past few years?" Joseph asked. "Mr. Smith, can you be more specific?"

Alexander paused. He was going to say to check what Monica had experienced abroad in the past six years. But then he remembered what Monica had said to Stella at the club.

He changed his mind. "Ten years. Go check what she's been through after she returned to the Brown family."

"Got it."

"And also, find out who she's been in contact with these past few days."

He needed to know who was causing her trouble.

Joseph nodded. "Okay, Mr. Smith, I understand."

Just then, the emergency room door opened, and the doctor came out, taking off his mask. "Mr. Smith, her physical condition is fine, just a bit weak. However, her mental state is not good. She has severe nyctophobia and claustrophobia, likely due to some bad experiences that have had a significant impact on her. In specific environments, these memories are triggered, causing her to faint. It's best to have her stay in the hospital for observation and help her overcome her past traumas, or this could happen again in the future."

"Okay, I understand."

Alexander had sensed she was in a bad state, but he hadn't realized it was this severe.

He turned to Joseph. "Go handle her hospital admission."

Joseph nodded and went to take care of it.

Back at the Smith Villa.

Daniel and Amelia had already been sent home by the driver, but they had heard about their mommy fainting in the elevator and had seen Alexander carrying her to the hospital.

Daniel knew he was in trouble. He and Amelia went into their room, closed the door, and he quickly called William.

"William, I'm sorry, I think I messed up." Daniel's voice was shaky, on the verge of tears.

Amelia had also witnessed Monica faint, and upon seeing Daniel on the verge of tears, her own eyes welled up with emotion.

"It's okay, take your time and tell me what happened," William said calmly.

"I didn't mean to. I just wanted to bring Dad and Mommy together, so I stopped the elevator. I didn't know Mommy would faint. Now Dad has taken her to the hospital."

"In the elevator?" William's tone instantly became serious. "Mommy has severe nyctophobia and claustrophobia. She can't handle either, let alone both at the same time."

"What should we do now?" Daniel was almost crying.

William thought for a moment. "Let's meet at the hospital first to check on Mommy's condition, and then we'll talk in detail."
