Chapter 040 Could It Be Her Boyfriend?

Hearing that, William began to waver.

Daniel grabbed his arm and put on his cutest face. "William, come on. You don't have to forgive Dad right away. Just give him a chance and see how he does. If he treats Mom well, then we can forgive him, okay?"

William finally gave in and nodded. "Alright, If he really treats Mom well, then we'll forgive him!"

"Yay!" Daniel cheered and jumped around excitedly.

Amelia, who had been crying, finally stopped.

William and Sophia exchanged a helpless smile.

Daniel was just too good at hitting their soft spots.

In the hospital room, Monica was still out cold.

Alexander stayed by her side, staring at her pale face, his brows furrowed tightly.

Joseph came back into the room and spoke quietly, "Mr. Smith, we've looked into everyone Mrs. Smith has been in contact with over the past few days."

"Go on."

"Mrs. Smith has been going to work as usual. Besides her colleagues, she's been in contact with two people:  Layla Brown, Mrs. Smith's biological mother, and your mother."

Alexander nodded.

Honestly, when Monica mentioned it in the elevator, he already had a pretty good idea, so this wasn't surprising.

"What did they say?" Alexander asked, his voice low.

"Mrs. Brown caused a scene at CLOUD company. Lots of employees saw it, so it was easy to find out. Layla slapped Mrs. Smith and told her to stop bothering you, saying you were about to marry Ms. Brown. She said a lot of harsh things, but Mrs. Smith didn't back down and almost broke Layla's fingers, scaring her quite a bit."

Joseph went into detail, and Alexander couldn't help but picture the scene, imagining Monica's reaction, and he couldn't help but smile.

Monica was definitely not as timid and easily manipulated as she was six years ago.

"As for your mother, she showed up at CLOUD around 2 PM today. Apparently, the people at CLOUD didn't give her any special treatment. Later, she met with Mrs. Smith in CLOUD's reception room. We couldn't get the surveillance footage, so we don't know exactly what they talked about. But many employees at CLOUD saw it and even took some videos," Joseph said, handing his phone to Alexander.

The video was noisy, mostly filled with chatter from CLOUD employees, making it hard to hear what Bertha and Monica were saying. But from the footage, Monica was always sitting on the sofa, looking calm and composed, with a cold and indifferent smile on her face, appearing both proud and aloof.

For some reason, Alexander found it hard to look away from Monica, as he had never seen her behave like this before.

Judging by Bertha's state when she got home this afternoon, Monica must have really gotten under her skin.

But Bertha brought it on herself. If she hadn't gone to CLOUD to mess with Monica, Monica wouldn't have done anything to her.

Alexander handed the phone back to Joseph and glanced at Monica lying on the hospital bed.

Right now, she looked so fragile and pale, a far cry from the confident and radiant Monica he'd seen earlier.

Even though Layla and Bertha didn't get the best of her, their words must've hit home. Otherwise, she wouldn't keep trying to push him away.

Thinking about it, the smile in Alexander's eyes disappeared.

Joseph stood by, watching him closely. Alexander's mood swings were too quick for comfort.

Joseph didn't dare say a word.

Suddenly, Monica murmured, "William..."

She slowly opened her eyes and immediately locked eyes with Alexander. She was stunned for a moment and instinctively said, "Alexander?"

What was he doing here?

Her mind was foggy, not fully recalling the day's events.

Alexander stood up and touched her forehead, which wasn't as hot anymore.

Without looking back, he told Joseph, "Go get the doctor."

"Yes, Mr. Smith."

With that, Joseph left, leaving just Monica and Alexander in the room.

Monica's mind cleared a bit, and she remembered the day's events. She said coldly, "Thanks for bringing me to the hospital, Mr. Smith. My friend will be here soon, so you can go now."

Her tone was icy and distant, the first thing she said was to ask him to leave.

Alexander's demeanor turned cold too. "Ms. Brown, your ingratitude is truly unmatched."

Monica frowned instinctively. Couldn't he just be nice for once?

She wanted to snap back, but she was too weak.

The doctor arrived soon and checked her over. "Ms. Brown, you're stable now, but you're still very weak and need to take care of yourself."

"Can I be discharged now?" Monica asked.

"Of course..." the doctor started.

But before he could finish, he caught Alexander's look, which clearly said, "No way."

The doctor awkwardly swallowed his words and said to Monica, "Of course not. We need to make sure the patients are fully recovered before discharging them. Ms. Brown, please stay until you're better."

Monica wanted to say she was a doctor and knew her own condition.

But Alexander had already spoken, "Monica, if you don't care about your own health, at least don't trouble others, okay?"

His tone was full of irritation.

Monica found it amusing. "Who am I troubling?"

Alexander was about to reply, but Monica cut him off coldly, "I want to go home."

Saying this, she tried to get out of bed.

She hadn't fully recovered and was still weak, but she didn't want to show weakness in front of Alexander, so she forced herself to stand.

Alexander watched her coldly, but his mind was on her words. 'Why the rush to go home? Is someone waiting for her there?'

She was an orphan brought back from the countryside and had cut ties with the Brown family. Who would be waiting for her at home?

Suddenly, he remembered the name she had murmured when she woke up: William.

Could it be her boyfriend?
