Chapter 041 Mr. Smith is Angry Again

Alexander felt a wave of irritation wash over him, and his voice turned icy. "If someone's waiting for you, they must be important. So why don't they know you're in the hospital?"

Monica was a bit stunned, not sure what his deal was.

But she couldn't let him find out about William and Sophia, so she snapped back, "What's it to you?"

"Yeah, it's none of my business," Alexander shot back, his anger rising. "But you've been out cold for ages, and he hasn't even checked in on you?"

"Alexander, what's your problem?"

Monica, fed up with his nonsense, got angry.

Alexander's face darkened even more.

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

The nearby doctor, sensing another argument brewing, didn't dare to intervene. Joseph waved him off, and they both left, closing the door behind them.

Monica didn't want to fight with Alexander anymore. She started packing her stuff, ready to leave.

But as she walked past him, he grabbed her arm and tossed her back onto the bed.

Dizzy from the sudden move, Monica hadn't even processed what happened when she saw him looming over her, his arms on either side of the bed, trapping her.

She wanted to yell at him, but seeing his furious face so close, she knew that the more she fought, the worse it would get.

But she wasn't about to play nice either.

She shut her eyes tight, trying to keep her cool, and asked coldly, "Mr. Smith, what do you want?"

"What do I want?" Alexander sneered. "Stay put and don't go anywhere until you're better."

Monica cursed silently.

But she couldn't win against Alexander, especially not in her weakened state.

So she lay back on the bed and turned her back to him.

Alexander, feeling bad, couldn't find it in himself to be kind, so he just dropped heavily into a chair when he saw Monica not listening to him.

It looked like he planned to stay and keep an eye on her.

Monica couldn't figure out what he wanted. Was he so bored that he had to interfere in her life?

But she didn't want to talk to him.

She reached into her bag and pulled out her phone, texting her kids.

Alexander then noticed Monica's anger fading as she held the phone for a while.

Was she texting that boyfriend who didn't care about her? Did that guy have such a hold on her?

Feeling uneasy, he said coldly, "Monica, enough. Put down the phone and rest."

Monica was taken aback. Did he really have to control her even when she was texting?

She ignored him.

Outside the hospital room, the kids sat in a row on the steps near the emergency exit, their heads resting on their hands, quiet.

It was already past nine at night. Usually, Amelia would be asleep by now, and she couldn't hold on any longer, her eyelids drooping.

Daniel took off his little jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Then he held her, letting her rest on his lap.

William and Sophia didn't have the habit of sleeping early and could still hold on.

"William, should we go check on Mommy? It's been so long, and we haven't heard from her. I'm worried," Sophia said to William.

"Alexander is still in the room, and Joseph is standing outside. We can't get close," William said calmly.

"Okay," Sophia responded.

But just then, both William and Sophia's phones rang.

They took out their phones simultaneously and saw a message from Monica in their family group chat: [Did you all sleep? Mommy needs to work late tonight. If it gets too late, Mommy won't come home and will sleep in the office.]

William started replying to her message.

Sophia pouted and muttered, "Mommy is sick, but she doesn't want us to know and is lying."

"Then we have to pretend we don't know," William replied to Sophia while messaging Monica.

After finishing, he put away his phone, stood up, and said calmly, "Let's call it a night. It's getting late. Everyone go home."

"Okay." Sophia stood up with him.

William looked at Daniel. "Daniel, you take Amelia out first. Sophia and I will leave later. It would be safer this way."

"You guys go first. Amelia is sleepy. I'll wake her up," Daniel said.

Although he wasn't very reliable usually, he never slacked when it came to Amelia.

William nodded. "Alright, we'll go first. Don't stay here too long. Once Amelia is awake, head home, okay?"

"Got it, William. Don't worry."

So, William took Sophia out of the emergency exit and walked in the opposite direction of the patient room.

Unexpectedly, Alexander came out of the room just then.

He was irritated by Monica and wanted to smoke. He saw the two small figures walking down the hallway.

He quickly caught up and called their names in a low voice, "Daniel, Amelia, stop right there!"

William and Sophia stopped simultaneously, looking at each other, neither turning around.

Alexander grabbed William by the collar, lifting him up, and said angrily, "Daniel, what are you doing here? Did you run away from home with Amelia again?"

William remained calm. "We didn't run away. Chase drove us here."

Alexander's anger subsided a bit, and he put him down, asking, "Then why are you at the hospital?"

William didn't answer immediately. After steadying himself and tidying his clothes, he looked up at Alexander and said calmly, "We heard you were at the hospital and thought you were sick. We were worried and came to check on you."

However, Alexander wasn't easily fooled. He looked at them suspiciously. "If you were worried, why didn't you just call me?"
